I don't have many, though for some reason, I have a number of quotes about cats...
A dog wags its tail with its heart.
Martin Buxbaum
A door is what a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of.
Ogden Nash
DOG, n. A subsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the world's worship . . . . his master works for the means wherewith to purchase the idle wag of the Solomonic tail, seasoned with a look of tolerant recognition.
Ambrose Bierce

Several more...
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semihuman. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog.
- Edward Hoagland
Dogs display reluctance and wrath
If you try to give them a bath
They bury bones in hideaways
And half the time they trot sideaways.
- Ogden Nash
A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down.
- Robert Benchley
The dog was created especially for children. He is the god of frolic.
- Henry Ward Beecher
You can say any fool thing to a dog, and the dog will give you this look that says, `My God, you're RIGHT! I NEVER would've thought of that!'

"I never understood loving something more than myself until I had a dog. As my friend Arthur Freed said in speaking of Bear's passing: 'Chief Peter Ganci and Father Judge must have told God that the thousands who perished that September day could use a great dog to comfort them....' and I shall never stroke a golden coat again without thinking of Bear."

Dog
by Lawrence Ferlinghetti
The dog trots freely in the street
and sees reality
and the things he sees
are bigger than himself
and the things he sees
are his reality
Drunks in doorways
Moons on trees
The dog trots freely thru the street
and the things he sees
are smaller than himself
Fish on newsprint
Ants in holes
Chickens in Chinatown windows
their heads a block away
The dog trots freely in the street
and the things he smells
smell something like himself
The dog trots freely in the street
past puddles and babies
cats and cigars
poolrooms and policemen
He doesn't hate cops
He merely has no use for them
and he goes past them
and past the dead cows hung up whole
in front of the San Francisco Meat Market
He would rather eat a tender cow
than a tough policeman
though either might do
And he goes past the Romeo Ravioli Factory
and past Coit's Tower
and past Congressman Doyle of the Unamerican Committee
He's afraid of Coit's Tower
but he's not afraid of Congressman Doyle
although what he hears is very discouraging
very depressing
very absurd
to a sad young dog like himself
to a serious dog like himself
But he has his own free world to live in
His own fleas to eat
He will not be muzzled
Congressman Doyle is just another
fire hydrant
to him
The dog trots freely in the street
and has his own dog's life to live
and to think about
and to reflect upon
touching and tasting and testing everything
investigating everything
without benefit of perjury
a real realist
with a real tale to tell
and a real tail to tell it with
a real live
barking
democratic dog
engaged in real
free enterprise
with something to say
about ontology
something to say
about reality
and how to see it
and how to hear it
with his head cocked sideways
at streetcorners
as if he is just about to have
his picture taken
for Victor Records
listening for
His Master's voice
and looking
like a living questionmark
into the
great gramophone
of puzzling existence
with its wondrous horn
which always seems
just about to spout forth
some Victorious answer
to everything

Elizabeth Barrett Browning
To Flush, My Dog
Loving friend, the gift of one
Who her own true faith has run
Through thy lower nature,
Be my benediction said
With my hand upon thy head,
Gentle fellow-creature!
Like a lady's ringlets brown,
Flow thy silken ears adown
Either side demurely
Of thy silver-suited breast
Shining out from all the rest
Of thy body purely.
Darkly brown thy body is,
Till the sunshine striking this
Alchemise its dullness,
When the sleek curls manifold
Flash all over into gold
With a burnished fulness.
Underneath my stroking hand,
Startled eyes of hazel bland
Kindling, growing larger,
Up thou leapest with a spring,
Full of prank and curveting,
Leaping like a charger.
Leap! thy broad tail waves a light,
Leap! thy slender feet are bright,
Canopied in fringes;
Leap! those tasselled ears of thine
Flicker strangely, fair and fine
Down their golden inches
Yet, my pretty, sportive friend,
Little is't to such an end
That I praise thy rareness;
Other dogs may be thy peers
Haply in these drooping ears
And this glossy fairness.
But of thee it shall be said,
This dog watched beside a bed
Day and night unweary,
Watched within a curtained room
Where no sunbeam brake the gloom
Round the sick and dreary.
Roses, gathered for a vase,
In that chamber died apace,
Beam and breeze resigning;
This dog only, waited on,
Knowing that when light is gone
Love remains for shining.
Other dogs in thymy dew
Tracked the hares and followed through
Sunny moor or meadow;
This dog only, crept and crept
Next a languid cheek that slept,
Sharing in the shadow.
Other dogs of loyal cheer
Bounded at the whistle clear,
Up the woodside hieing;
This dog only, watched in reach
Of a faintly uttered speech
Or a louder sighing.
And if one or two quick tears
Dropped upon his glossy ears
Or a sigh came double,
Up he sprang in eager haste,
Fawning, fondling, breathing fast,
In a tender trouble.
And this dog was satisfied
If a pale thin hand would glide
Down his dewlaps sloping, --
Which he pushed his nose within,
After, -- platforming his chin
On the palm left open.
This dog, if a friendly voice
Call him now to blither choice
Than such chamber-keeping,
"Come out!" praying from the door, --
Presseth backward as before,
Up against me leaping.
Therefore to this dog will I,
Tenderly not scornfully,
Render praise and favor:
With my hand upon his head,
Is my benediction said
Therefore and for ever.
And because he loves me so,
Better than his kind will do
Often man or woman,
Give I back more love again
Than dogs often take of men,
Leaning from my Human.
Blessings on thee, dog of mine,
Pretty collars make thee fine,
Sugared milk make fat thee!
Pleasures wag on in thy tail,
Hands of gentle motion fail
Nevermore, to pat thee
Downy pillow take thy head,
Silken coverlid bestead,
Sunshine help thy sleeping!
No fly's buzzing wake thee up,
No man break thy purple cup
Set for drinking deep in.
Whiskered cats arointed flee,
Sturdy stoppers keep from thee
Cologne distillations;
Nuts lie in thy path for stones,
And thy feast-day macaroons
Turn to daily rations!
Mock I thee, in wishing weal? --
Tears are in my eyes to feel
Thou art made so straitly,
Blessing needs must straiten too, --
Little canst thou joy or do,
Thou who lovest greatly.
Yet be blessed to the height
Of all good and all delight
Pervious to thy nature;
Only loved beyond that line,
With a love that answers thine,
Loving fellow-creature!

farsix,
Can you believe Capt. Scott Shields saw the post I made about his beloved search and rescue dog bear on this obscure website and emailed me with a short note and gave me the webpage to visit where I could read about Bear and his new search and rescue dog, Theodore(able) a grandson I think, of Bear and the work they did after Katrina devastated New Orleans? The lives they saved, the people they found was astronomical. I was thrilled beyond belief to hear from him. I had a WAGS dog in obedience training to be a service dog for the handicapped, Palmer had to be dropped out of service when his hip x-rays came back showing he had severe hip dysplasia and he was placed in a pet home. I hope they kept up with his service training because he was extraordinarally smart and could open doors, pick up dropped items and retrieve the phone or remote as well as walk alongside a wheelchair without pulling unless asked to pull - he knew all of this by the time he was 9 months old!
The search and rescue dogs and other dogs trained to help man in ways no other animal could are just amazing and they do it all for just a pat on the head, a toss of the ball or a good belly rub and the words 'good dog.'
All of this is done with out-of-pocket money and is a free service to any area hit with a disaster. The Bear Search and Rescue Foundation is an organization to which donations can be made to help with the expenses incurred with the training and work they do, what a great man he is.

Kees-lady, I went to the site and donated money. His love of dogs brought him to this site and his acknowledgement to you and the work they do deserves it.

I am sure he appreciated the donation. His love of dogs is so great and the work they do is so important, saving lives must be one of the most rewarding jobs a dog can do.

Well I have a dog quote, not what you might expect bit it was told to me by a Bassett Hound while I was walking into a local store for a top up in groceries in Kentucky. It went like this...
Woof Woof Woof (wimper wimper) Woooof Wof WoooF Wooo-oo-oof Huf Huf grrrnaaaarl. Bark!
Well I was quite taken a back, quite rude but I had to shake his little paw as the boy was right! Basically he said,
you can't park that Chevy on a disabled parking lot
I'll tell you folks, there are some clever dogs down in Kentucky!

Capt. Shields new dog is a son of Bear, he has his own bio page, was credited with most finds at the Katrina disaster, found a missing person, and most fantastic of all, he jumped up on the bed of a girl in a coma (diabetic if I remember right) and she came out of the coma so he's a Therapy Dog too! I wish Capt. Shields would post the link to Theodore's bio - it's a great read and really tells the story of how hard these dogs work for the love and praise.
Scott, if you're reading this please post Theo's bio here!

The dignity and grace of our
canine friends are amazing to me.
We humans have so much to learn from them.
Such an uneven exchange.... such a small price
they demand from us.
A little food and water, a little attention
and a corner in which to sleep.
In return, we get volumes of unconditional love,
patience, understanding and loyalty.
If only the human race could unlock
their secrets...."

Some dogs come into our lives and quickly go.
Others stay a while, leaving footprints
on our hearts and we are changed forever"

I like that one too, Roger Caras was wonderful. I felt it was terribly inappropriate that there wasn't a tribute to him during Westminster after he passed away. The only reasonable explanation I can think of is perhaps his family did not want one.

This isn't really a quote but feel it's appropriate with this thread....
---------------------------------------------------
This story is of very old origin; it is found in Sanskrit and in most ancient literatures.
Wales-1200 A.D.
One day Prince Llewellyn goes off on a hunt, leaving his faithful Wolfhound Gelert in care of his infant son. Upon return, Llewellyn finds Gelert covered with blood, the nursery in shambles and the child no where in sight. Enraged at the thought that Gelert betrayed his trust and killed his son, Llewellyn wreaks vengeance:
“Hell-hound! By thee my child’s devour’d!” the frantic father cried.
And to the hilt his vengeful sword, he plung’d in Gelert’s side. Gelert’s dying moan is answered by a cry from Llewellyn’s son. Searching frantically, Llewellyn finds the child under the bed, and nearby is the body of a wolf killed by Gelert in defense of the baby. Grief-stricken at his murderous haste, Llewellyn erects a chapel & monument at the foot of Mount Snowden and buries Gelert there. Bethgelert, Gelert’s Grave, still stands there today.
-------------------------------------------------------
This was in a dog book I've had since a child.... The Irish Wolfhound breed's motto is "Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked".

Sorry, Scott Shields has never "shook me down" for a darn thing. Never has he asked for money, a donation, etc., I made the quote and put up the link to bear search and rescue for others to read - he never asked me to. He had nothing to do with it - not even a hint of a suggestion.
However, the pet store where I work offers a discount on food and supplies to any rescue group or other organization involved with dogs - if they show the proper credentials. It's a public service we provide because we know the cost of food is astronomical, and so are the supplies needed in training and maintaining service/therapy/rescue dogs.
