I am trying to accomplish the feat of watching all of the TS movies, and so far I have seen the 3 Spy Kids, the 2 MIBs, Big Night, Galaxy Quest, half of Cars, and Paulie. My favorite roles out of these was Mischa in Paulie and Fred Kwan/Sgt. Chen in Galaxy Quest. I do like Tony's Italian accent though in Big Night and Cars. What are your favorite Tony Shalhoub roles? Let me know so I can put those to the top of my list of movies to watch.
Thanks!

Galaxy Quest for me (can one imagine how Monk would react if he'd been forced to stand next to an alien pig-lizard that had been turned inside out, and then explodes all over the room?).

I've purchased most of his movies, save for Made Up, Cars & Barton Fink, which I watched. I have (and have seen)
Galaxy Quest
Impostor
The Impostors
The Last Shot
Paulie
Big Night
Life Or Something Like It
Thir13en Ghosts
The Man Who Wasn't There
A Civil Action
The Siege
Addams Family Values
Wings series
Stark Raving Mad
And I have to admit, from a movie standpoint, I liked him in Big Night, Thir13en Ghosts, and Galaxy Quest the most (probably because his parts were the biggest in those movies and because he just shapes himself into those characters. I got a whole dead wife-Trudy vibe from the Ghost one too--and the makeout scene with the alien lady in Quest). I also enjoyed him in the Man Who Wasn't There for his fast talking lawyer. If I'd have not known better I'd never have recognized him there--so different!
I love love love him in the Wings series and Stark Raving Mad. I wish they'd release Stark Raving Mad officially with the unreleased episodes! They'd be so exciting to see!
Of course, most of all, I love him in Monk! The role fits him to a T!

The Stark Raving Mad episodes are available on YouTube ... I saved them all in playlists. Most are in 3 sections. I'm including links to the person who downloaded many of them, as well as my playlists, although I don't know if that'll work for you.
Fav roles? Oh ... I would agree with Big Night, Made Up, Paulie, etc. One not often mentioned is AmericanEast, which Tony is great in - and it's a great film altogether as well. I didn't care for the basketball movie, although that's definitely not my style of movie.
I am SO looking forward to Feed the Fish coming out - and I was part of the volunteer crew, so I get to go to a Cast/Crew screening in Wisconsin next month. I, too, am on a quest to watch all of his movies, and Brooke's as well.

Thanks everybody for your favorite Tony Shalhoub movies! I will have to go and check some of those out, but unfortanately the movie rental stores near my house don't carry most of his movies. =(
Also, WisconsinLovesTony, I am extremely excited for Feed the Fish, do you know when it will be in theaters? I live in Milwaukee, WI and I could probably get up to Door County if it was only playing there, but only if it was on a weekend. When I clicked on the Stark Raving Mad links, it didn't really work. It did work when I went to your channel:

Hi Monanic,
I think I've seen most of the ones listed here. I think the only ones haven't seen are the more recent independent films like Made-Up, American East and Feed the Fish.... Oh and I haven't seen Wings aside from a few video clips because I don't think it aired where I live. I've seen some Stark Raving Mad thanks to WisconsinLovesTony's channel.
Anyway, my favs are:
Big Night
Primo is such a sweet character. I love his integrity and devotion towards his art of cooking. The dinner scenes, "Rape of cuisine", "raining inside", "Preferisco morire pił tanto." (I'd rather die) scenes, are my favs. His Italian pronunciation is beautiful. I don't mean just the accented English but the actual stuff he says in the Italian language as well. I studied Italian at uni and was so happy I could understand everything he's saying (and Stanley too of course). Loved the Italian music too.
The Impostors
(I saw this like yesterday)
Voltri was hilarious especially the subtitled parts, and the end credits where he's dancing in the back left corner to the Louie Armstrong piece is cute. I wish the film was longer!
The Man Who Wasn't There
The "uncertainty principle" scene is so beautiful in terms of delivery, composition and lighting. It's like a painting when they reveal that shot where Tony is backlit by the spot light and there's a dark silhouette of him and that long cast shadow creating so much contrast with everything else. I also like the relatively straighter hair style he's got going in this film. It gives him a very... authoritative, "I mean business" kind of look.
Against the Ropes
(saw this a week ago)
The role he played, Sam LaRocca, in this one was very contrasting to Monk and I liked it. It just shows how versatile he is. If I had to compare it to someone that appeared in Monk, it'd be Frankie Da Palma. Seriously. I saw "Mr. Monk is Someone Else" first so when I was watching this, I was like "OMG it's Frankie Da Palma!".
Cars
I studied animation so I love animated films and great voice acting. Though Tony's character, Luigi, doesn't have a lot of screen time, I thought the character was adorable. Same with Guido the little forklift. I love the interaction of those two. I especially like the end where they faint. I was like "aw, poor lil' cars...." In general, I liked the nature scenes in this film when Sally and Lightning "go for a drive" - extremely beautifully rendered.
WisconsinLovesTony, I'm so envious of you and how you got to volunteer for the Feed the Fish movie. Must have been such a blast to be part of the making.

Glad you could see the Stark Raving Mad episodes ... they're great, aren't they?
Feed the Fish was an awesome experience - I'm really really glad I pursued it. The screening that's coming up in November is for the cast/crew, but I think it has to go to the film festivals and get picked up before it'll be playing in mainstream theaters ... I'll actually learn more about that whole process when I'm up there.
As for the more recent independant films, have you tried Netflix? I got most of my TS movies through them, and they even had some streaming online, which was nice - and FAST since I could watch them back to back if I wanted.
I also have Melora Hardin's (aka Trudy) film, You. She wrote it and stars in it with her real-life husband, and she directed/produced it as well. It's dramatic, comedic, and a heart-wrenching peace. I watched it with a friend who I've never seen cry ... she took the whole box of Kleenex to her chair, and was still sniffling when she left!!

Yes, they're great. Thanks for sharing them with everyone.

I totally missed this series when it was originally airing because I didn't have a TV at the time. It's nice to see him as a more confident character. He seems so different that when I was watching I'd forget he's the same individual that played Monk (which is good because it just shows how convincing he is as those different characters). I think my favourite moment was the part where he catches a weird slimy monster-like thing and is like "What the hell!?"
Please let us know how that screening goes. I'd really love to hear about it. I wish they'd make more movies where I live.... I'd so volunteer just to know more about what goes on and stuff....
Thanks for the Netflix suggestion. I'll see if they have a decent equivalent up here in Canada.
Ah, I read a little bit about "You" on Melora Hardin's site. I'm glad to hear good things about it. I shall do my best to check it out. Thank you for the recommendation.

I was recently home sick, and I stayed home and watched all 22 episodes of Stark Raving Mad, so thank you WisconsinLovesTony! I thought it was so weird that Tony Shalhoub wasn't playing a germaphobe, and when Henry McNeely first met him and shook his hand and then used hand sanitizer, I laughed! I was like, wow, this isn't right! I eventually got used to it, and I realized how much I love seeing Tony in other roles, he is such an amazing actor. I guess that this is my silver lining on the dark dismal cloud of the ending of Monk. Tony Shalhoub will be in other movies and TV shows, and he is good in whatever he does!
Chibizaki - I loved that slimy alien part too, I totally did not see that coming!
WisconsinLovesTony - Thank you for the Netflix idea and for telling me about "You". I have heard about it before, but I don't know when that one is coming to theaters either. Keep us posted on Feed the Fish! =)

I liked TS' character in The Siege too. I just wish there was more screen time of him and that they put more of the focus on that character since he is the protagonist' partner.
As for Great New Wonderful, I've seen the TS scenes but not the entire film. I really liked the portions I saw. I thought it was interesting how TS is now the shrink - a very strange shrink at that!
Does anyone notice how the directors often choose TS' hair style to be less curly when he is playing a role that is of high status, authority, or confidence?
Ex.
Ian Stark (successful horror writer) - SRM
Faruq "Frank" Haddad (FBI Agent) - Siege
Freddy Riedenschneider (successful criminal lawyer) - Man Who Wasn't There
Sam LaRocca (exec of sporting management company) - Against t Ropes
The German (successful genetic profile salesman) - Gattaca
Kevin Conway (personal injury lawyer) - Civil Action
Mishal Vylienkov (Russian literature teacher)* - Paulie - I know he's a janitor for the film but that's what he was back home and by the end of the film he kind of regains that status from a mental/emotional stand point.
Exceptions would be:
Ben Geisler (film exec producer) - Barton Fink
Voltri (first mate on ocean liner) - The Impostors

You are right, I hadn't noticed that! I thought that Arthur Kriticos seemed pretty confident though in Thirteen Ghosts, but Tony had curly hair. hmm....
Also, did anyone who saw Stark Raving Mad notice that Ileane Meltzer was the costume designer? I thought that that was pretty interesting since she is the costume designer for Monk too! I guess it's easy to remember names when you see them on your TV screen every week. =)

Yes, i did also notice that Ileane was the costume designer for Monk and SRM - thought I might've been the only one to notice things like that ... I should know better! I think it's hilarious that Tony's character on SRM is not the germaphobe - wonder if he'd like to go back to playing opposite the germaphone just to help him get the 'Monk' out of him (c:
Glad you all like the episodes on Youtube!! I'm glad they were available to assemble into playlists - I know Jseven put some of them out there - So happy about that! Does anyone know how the episode with the hypnotist ends? Been driving me crazy
I have a fish & a snail at work - they are named Ian and Jake (c:
The Siege was great, as was a Civil Action, and I have "The Great New Wonderful" - another great film. I did see "The Naked Brothers Band", which I could NOT make myself sit through, however Tony had a cameo and if you can manage to fast forward until you see it, is hilarious for Monk fans since Tony's character gives up soda for ... milk. I would pick Galaxy Quest. My favorite scene would be when Fred kinda freaked out at having "beam up" Jason. Understandable. He didn't want the same thing to happen to him that happened to the pig lizard. I called a pre-Monk freakout.

Yeah, I consider Arthur in the middle ground because though he isn't as low self esteem as Mr. Monk, he's definitely damaged, hurt, and at a low point emotionally from the loss of his wife and debts. I see Primo in a similar way. He's passive and timid (especially around Ann) but he does firmly believe in what he creates and has confidence in what he cooks.
Yeah I noticed the costume designer thing too. It's neat how there are those connections.

He has a cameo in "Quick Change" that steals the show. It's a funny movie nevertheless, but TS comes in as a non-english speaking Taxi Cab Driver in NYC, unwittingly helping 3 bank robbers (Bill Murray, Randy Quaid, and Geena Davis) get out of the city. He gets a lot of face time as he tries to help the cops. Funny movie, funny part for Tony. Check it out.

I haven't seen the entire film but I've seen some QC - the scenes in which TS appears where he's speaking in a fictional language. I think TS has a knack for doing made-up languages. He does it in The Impostors and again in Mr. Monk and the Earthquake where he's exhibiting signs of temporary aphasia.

I didn't find it that scary - creepy and unusual, maybe but not scary. Maybe I just don't scare easily with film (real life is a different story unfortunately), I don't watch the horror genre very much, and I hardly dream about the films I watch. If you want to be safe about it, just watch it during day time in sunny weather, maybe on a smaller screen (i.e. laptop size screen), and a relative/friend or two by your side that you know for sure won't try to scare you on purpose (i.e. someone NOT like Ian Stark

).
Also, if you only want to see TS just for curiosity's sake, and don't really care about anything else then it's kind of a waste to watch the whole thing since he's in it only for like... 2 minutes out of the 100 or so minutes of mainly Cusack (and TS' appearance is BEFORE all the strange stuff happens so you can watch that part and then just turn it off after you see the TS part if you still feel uneasy about it).
Also... there seems to be an alternate ending (it was an earlier version of the film but they ended up changing it to a slightly happier ending) that is more eerier in which TS re-appears. It's like at the very very end of the film so again, you can probably just skip the middle if you're uncomfortable. And though the first ending with TS is a little more eerie, there isn't anything gross or scary happening.

You're very welcome.
LOL yeah Mr. Monk and Ian Stark would be a very... dangerous combo. I think Ian would end up scaring Mr. Monk half to death and Natalie and Dr. Bell (and Dr. Kroger from the "Other Side") would try to kill Ian for ruining all their hard work.
On another note, I just finished watching AmericanEast (TS plays Sam, a Jewish businessman). I like how it addresses many of the problems of how media screws with people's perception of certain groups of people. I identify with the children in the film as a child of immigrants myself. I liked the incorporation of animation in the film too.
