Full Version: Psych DVD problems

I bought the DVDs of Psych seasons 1 and 2 today. Yay! Not a single one of the DVDs will play on my laptop. Boo! I checked other DVDs and they play just fine. It's only the Psych ones. I insert the DVD, the laptop makes some noise like it's thinking about recognizing a disc, and then spits it right back out.

My former roommate has the same laptop model (MacBook Pro) and never had problems watching her Psych DVDs on her laptop. Has anyone else had this problem, and did you manage to fix it?

It's probably one of several things:

1. Advanced copy-protection on the DVDs
2. You need to upgrade your drivers
3. The discs aren't clean
4. The discs are scratched
5. Your DVD drive is half-broken and therefore selective
6. Something was wrong when the discs were made.

I suggest downloading newer drivers, a new DVD playback program, checking to see if the disks work on an actual TV, cleaning the DVDs, and running them through a CD repair kit.

You mentioned that you have a Mac. I had this same problem when I first tried to play the DVD's on my MacBook. Go to this link here

Problem with Playing DVD's on a Mac

and download VLC. It explains it a little better in this link but I ended up downloading VLC. It was easy and quick and my problem went away. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

I downloaded new drivers and VLC, and cleaned the discs. Still no luck with the laptop, but a friend checked the DVDs on her TV and it works fine there. Well, maybe she'll want them.

Thanks for the advice!

Wow... I'm sorry nothing worked for you. sad.gif Ask her if they work on her computer. It may be a copy-protection thing, maybe not. I don't have the DVDs, so I dunno.

*flail* Whoa, hold up! Don't start giving away DVDs until you've exhausted every last option. Those things are expensive. Not to mention we want you to be able to enjoy your DVDs! :)

Now, let's see... I know it seems like a silly question, but have you checked the Region on both the DVDs and what your MacBook is set to? I had a friend with a similar problem and it turned out to be a region issue. If the DVDs are regular ol' US Region 1 and that's what your MacBook is set to, then there shouldn't be a problem, but I would suppose it would depend where you bought them. *shrug* VLC is supposed to fix the region problem, but I know some Macs will just spit the DVD out if it's the wrong region.

I don't own a Mac myself, and have never actually used one (eep!), but I've heard that using the "repair permissions" feature can sometimes help with this issue. Here a link to a little more about it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452 Maybe you could ask DoggyDoc65 with help on this part, since they seem to know a bit more about Macs than I do.

Anyway, I'll see if I can find any other cause for your DVDs not working. Don't give up! :3

Thanks but there's no need to keep looking for solutions, CarpeNoctem! I tried the DVDs again this morning just in case. I didn't change a single setting from my last try, but all the discs play without a problem now. Weird, but I'm not going to question it. smile.gif

That's great! Not sure what it could have been, but at least your DVDs are playing now. :3
