Yes, I have watched Royal Pains. IMO Royal Pains is a silly show with virtually no character developement and little charisma among the cast. I haven't developed any concern for any of the characters. The second the show ends, I foget about it. After many weeks of watching the show, I find no depth of acting talent and no sex appeal or tension from the main actors. The true test of the show would be to move it to its own night and see if it pulls viewers.
Yes, I have watched Leverage a few times. I like some of the actors and the plots are more complicated but for some reason, I never got hooked.
Burn Notice has 4 main characters who to me are interesting, good actors, physically attractive and have charisma. Compliment this with excellent writing, excellent nuanced acting, first rate secondary guest actors and an intriguing base plot line ( the burn notice and the spy world) you have a "perfect storm".
Let me preface the following with this. MacGyver was a very popular show which unfortunately, I rarely watched. IMO to refer to BN as another MacGyver is simplistic. Yes there is a gadget aspect to BN but take the gadgetry out of the script and the best elements of the show remain. That is the characters / friendship / family / lover / spys. Their dynamic interplay supports the show. I will agree that BN is better, that is more interesting, with the gadgetry but it is not dependent on it.
Phew,,,,,,,I have never posted so much.
Wow, you pretty much summed up how I feel about Royal Pains, Leverage, Burn Notice, and my own experience of MacGyver (like you I didn't watch MacGyver but have seen a few episodes within the last few years). I agree that MacGyver is much more straightforward as a gadget show, whereas Burn Notice is a show about loyalty, courage, love, heroism, patriotism, with gadgets and explosions and shootouts being a part of the story but not the crux of the story.
Honestly, I couldn't agree with you more on all counts. Thanks for the great post, Match!
