no, it was going against the "no computer on school nights" rule in my house, which, unfortunately to say, is very heavily enforced.

I did that with my son, too. But as he got older I allowed a set amount of time (after homework ) and just not "free reign" time all night long. Then as he got older and got his own computer it just stayed on most of the evening in the living room because a lot of homework research and typing and such was done on the computer. I think laptops are more common now though.
