Full Version: Inspired by the Bollywood opening credits...
USA Network Forums > USA Network Originals > Psych
Yeoboseyo
Well, first things first: I'll be leaving for Muscat, Oman to teach English within the next couple of weeks, so I'll be seriously deprived of Psych for the rest of the season - or at least until I can watch it online.

Which brings me to this: I loved that they used Devanagari script to write the actors' names for the opening credits for the Bollywood episode (although I think they're missing the conjunct letters this script is famous for - in "Omundson" for example, it would be "O-mu-nd-so-n", while on the show they had it as "o-mu-n-d-so-n" - but I guess that's splitting hairs. More info: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/devanagari.htm).

So, I thought that I would try my hand at writing the actors' names in Arabic script (which I'm trying to learn in a hurry before I take off), which presents its own set of peculiarities and difficulties. If anyone reading this actually speaks/writes Arabic, I'd greatly appreciate any feedback.

Without further ado, here are the names (to the best of my limited abilities) - last names in green. And Arabic is read right-to-left:

James Roday

جيمز رواداي

Dulé Hill

دولاي هيل

Maggie Lawson

مفي لاوسن

Timothy Omundson

تمثي اموندسن

Kirsten Nelson

كرستن نيلسن

Corbin Bernsen

كربن برنسن

Steve Franks

ستيڤ فرنكس

Well I havent seen the episode yet since it isnt on till next week but I loved the coming attraction when they are eating the spicy Indian food.

Sean: I can't see out of my left eye.

Gus: I'm seeing dead people.

Thanks, Yeoboseyo and Dinchy! It fascinates me how people can understand more than one language. I just can't wrap my mind around it.
Yeoboseyo
Emily - when you first learn a language, the first thing you must remember is to not expect the language to be like English in ANY way. It's more than just learning words - you're learning an entire system. Hope that encourages you in your second language-learning endeavors.

Alright, I'm gonna try this out - Shawn and Juliet hypothetically speaking in Korean... Notice that I used a messy, scribbled font for Shawn while I used a more stately, "official" font for Juliet.

Shawn:

~흐르흐르~ [~heureuheureu~]
(sound of pedaling elliptical machine)

아이구, 피곤해... 왜 이렇게 했어, 쥴리엣씨? [Aigu, pigonhae... Wae ireohge haesseo, Jyullies-ssi?]
"Omigod, I'm tired... Why was [I] doing something like this, Juliet?"

Juliet:

너 바보야... [Neo baboya...]
"You idiot..."

너랑 왜 이렇게 사이가 좋을까? [Neorang wae ireohge saiga joheulgga?]
"Why do you think I'm friends with you?"

it's not that hard maybe in beginning but if you have will you can learn it. English is my second language and i can understand most of spanish and I speak little german and i agree with Yeoboseyo it is a lot of more than learning words

@Yeoboseyo nice work with pic smile.gif
tvspaz626
i can speak only enough french or spanish to get by while traveling. i think. havent actually tried yet. hahah
i went to french-speaking canada when i was 6, before i learned french and i went to mexico/honduras on a cruise before i learned spanish.
i really would want to learn sign language though. its so pretty. and its like code for those who don't know it.

dinchy, what's your native language?
Yeoboseyo
Did a few more of these Korean-captioned screenshots:

In red: "탁!" [Tak!] ('BOOM!')

L: 날 봐!!! [Nal bwa!!!] ('Look at me!!!')

S: 참, 우리 물어보는 거 끝나고 그냥 라떡볶이 한 게 주문하면 어때?
[Cham, uri mureoboneun geo ggeutnago geunyang raddeokboggi han gae jumunhamyeon eottae?]
'Hey, how about if we finish asking around and just order a plate of ramyeon-ddeokboggi (stewed rice cakes with noodles)?'

할래? ^^
[Hallae? ^^]
'Shall we? ^^'

G: 숀아, 뭐라구?
[Syona, mweoragu?]
'Shawn, what are you talking about?'

thank you!

and i must agree with all of you about learning languages being about more than just words, that's kind of what i love about it, that its not so straightforward. i really wish that, like most other parts of the world, learning foreign languages in school at a young age was required.

Those are awesome- thanks for sharing!

DeepPoet117, it's just one of those things that some people are good at, and some are not, like any skill smile.gif Plus it also has a lot to do with their experiences and being exposed to different langauges for whatever reason. Besides english, I also know spanish, french, and american sign language (well enough to get by, anyway). I learned spanish along with english while growing up, and I guess I just have a gift for words, because french just came to me easily. Now my next challenge is to learn a language that is not a romance language, and maybe even learn a non-romance language that doesn't use the roman script that I'm used to. That would be cool. Just gotta decide which one wink.gif

And YES! I totally agree with learning and translating languages! I am always so frustrated with people who only want to translate words, and of course it just sounds awful in the end. It's about translating the message- not the words. Case in point, in ASL (sign language), depending on what you're saying, you can easily say a whole sentence with just one or two signs. The economy of words is amazing in that language, and it's all about the message. It's awesome to see people here who understand that concept smile.gif

aw so italian is out of the running? sad.gif lol i think you should learn it someday but im biased since i speak it and i absolutely LOVE it, its gorgeous! biggrin.gif plus, there are some amazing italian movies out there

and as for ASL, i know some, im not sure how well i would fare since i only use it w/ friends at times when it would be inapproriate to speak aloud or at really loud concerts but i love it! unfortunately my high school cut both the ASL and the japanese programs after my 1st yr there and annoyingly enough my major makes no space whatsoever for anything but science, but i'd love to get back to it

I could advise you on that. Two of the most popular non-Romance language with non-roman scripts are Chinese and Japanese. For both, there's a HUGE learning curve to learn to read these scripts (for entirely different reasons: Chinese requires the learner to learn at least 6000 characters before s/he can read a newspaper, while Japanese uses THREE different scripts - including one based on Chinese characters!), while reconciling these with the spoken language. Also, these are good to know just in case you ever end up on the business world side of things.

Korean might be a good compromise, but it's not as popular - the script takes only a week to learn (at most), but its grammar is much like Japanese = it's rather difficult. Also good for business, as well as if you want to teach English overseas someday.

Arabic - quite important in today's political climate, and the language (both written and spoken aspects) is quite challenging. Farsi uses a similar script, but is more related to Hindi (and to Romance languages and even English, believe it or not).

There are plenty of other languages with non-Roman scripts - it's entirely up to you and what you're currently interested in.

my native language is Bosnian but Croatian and Serbian languages are as same languages as Bosnian only difference is that Serbs use Cyrillic and in my country live all three nations so we have to know Latin and Cyrillic because some school books are written in Latin and Cyrillic it can be annoying beacuse one page is on Latin and next is on Cyrillic and on tv one show has subtitles on Latin another on Cyrillic but I'm better in Latin because we use it more often

I would probably lean toward Japanese, just because the phonetics are something that sounds more like what I could handle. I'd love to try Chinese sometime, but that may be way out of my league, lol. I'm not sure I could really 'get' certain aspects of the language, like tone, for example, nevermind the reading part. My daughter watches the show Ni Hao Kai Lan sometimes, and I've gotta admit it's interesting!

thats crazy about the textbooks! hahah.
another question then since i dont really know any one from a country that speaks another language primarily. sad, right? i mean, i know a few but most of them are family members who speak spanish fluently cuz they're from puerto rico or their parents were. haha
anyway the other question is generally in school, when they teach u another language, what age do u start learning it and what options are given? im assuming english is a popular choice? or does the school choose for you? etc.
cuz for me, in 4th grade we learned spanish, 5th grade we learned spanish for 1/2 the year and french for 1/2 the year. then in 6th grade we got to choose which one we wanted to learn. and in HS you could continue french or spanish or you could take chinese, german, or latin.
but down in GA, people didnt start learning foreign languages til 9th grade! which is ridiculous!

so i was just wondering. cuz i will never be good enough in french or spanish to go on a messageboard and talk with the people there! hahah

Very cool thread! Interesting reading here. smile.gif

I'm a little ashamed to say that, although I've taken enough college-level Spanish courses to get a minor in the language, I haven't practiced it in so long that I'm really not very good at it. I can read the language fairly well, and I can pick out bits and pieces of spoken Spanish, but I'm not so good with communicating myself.

I mean... I can manage alright in a Spanish-speaking marketplace... but not so very well in a conversational situation. Except for pronunciation. I'm ace at that.

One of these days I'm actually going to pick the language back up so that I'm more comfortable with it.

And as for something I may never use? I'm going to attempt to learn spoken Irish, which I think is a really weird but awesome language.

So i've listened to the theme song a ton of times. and i just listened to it like, 15 times in a row so i could write down what was being said.
clearly, i don't know Hindi. everything i wrote was written super phonetically so that by reading it i read exactly what was sung.

it goes:

Hah HAH!

But t'ha hemo chi bunchen dtee he me
But t'ha hemo chi bunchen dtee he mee
Secheenah he
Ke heyda ho
ok yerfasi cu hee come on uh hee
bud uhyo tu puhd'duh hee

I know, you know
dink daka dink, dink daka dink
I know, you know
dink daka dink, dink daka dink

Embrace the deception
(ooohhhh)
Learn how to bend
(ooohhhhhhh)
Your worst inhibitions
(ohhhhh)
mun ku mun day uh dtay hey
I know, you know!

btw, if there's an ' b/w two words its cuz that sound is said twice. ex: its not "but ha" or "but ta", but "but t-ha"
also, when i put D and T together (ex:dtee) its like the word bundt. you say the d and t. so its not "dee" or "tee" but d-tee.
hahah. so hard to explain!

*goes back to singing*

i will have this memorized by friday night! its my goal! biggrin.gif

Yeah... I think your lyrics are probably more accurate than my version. I mainly wrote them down as phonetically as I could (using the Spanish pronunciation of things for my purposes) to help me remember them.

But, man I love these credits. Can't get enough of this song.

we don't have choice school choose for us sad.gif we started learning english in 4th grade and we learned it for 4 years than in high school we learned english, german and latin, latin for 2 years and german and english for 4 years and at university we learned english just first year. I have learned english in private school for 7 years so don't worry if you don't speak spanish or french good enough i don't know german either although i learned it for 4 years in school. I am forced to learn english because everything around me is on english for example internet and movies and if you go in any other country you can use english because everybody knows it if you don't know english it is like you're illiterate. you're lucky because english is your native language so you don't have to make effort to learn it smile.gif

How cool is this?! Except the Korean doesnt show on my screen. High school is a little late to start a lanuage, I envy those who learn a different lauguage earlier, they're so much better at it! Waiting till 9th grade to learn a language was a big mistake, really.
My dad and Grandmother speak Tiawanese (I think that's spelled wrong, sorry!) and its really cool to listen, even though I can't understand. There's something about a fluid conversation in a forgien lanuage that I think is really cool.
Dinchy; you're right, English as a 2nd language (according to my cousin, my bro's best friend, and several other people) sucks.

Actually, you did a really good job with that! biggrin.gif

basically what i said was:
-"Me too!" (responding to psychrulz)
-"I am studying science at university so I haven't been able to take italian for 18 months" (Science majors aren't required to take a foreign language so when the advisors map out your college "career" they dont make room for them and most science and language classes, mine at least, are offered at the same times during the day)
-"but when my friend and I are together we speak italian" (or try to, as much as we can)
-"I agree, speaking is harder than writing" (again responding to psychrulz, because with writing you can think for a bit and you don't feel rushed and sometimes braindead haha)

Yeah, I hear ya, one is rarely productive (or conscious!) during the first class of the day lol

oh lol no worries i definitely couldnt do it either! im far from fluent but i at least know enough to make my way around italy, i can order food, ask directions, be polite and discuss clothing, oddly enough haha.
ive got bits and pieces of a few other topics but not enough for entire conversations mostly because its stuff that ive picked up from italian movies and music (loooove andrea bocelli!) and my old prof used to just go off on random tangents in the middle of class so i know a bunch of slang, little rhymes, etc. thankfully i have two very good friends who are minoring in italian so they make sure i dont forget everything biggrin.gif

grrr! why do all of the italian classes have to be at the same times as my major classes?!!!

yes, that was a rhetorical question smile.gif lol
