So we're left hanging by a whim with tonight's final episode and we have to wait until next summer!!! Right when I saw that I jumped up and had to post here to see if there was an answer. I'm really curious.
Why so long until next season?!
Thanks

Hi gooberman

Yes, that's correct - Royal Pains will be back for Season 2 next summer 2010. This is pretty much how the USA network runs their shows. They take advantage of the summer while network shows are on hiatus. Here some more info I've copied & pasted from the Cliff Notes:
Why aren't there more episodes/why is season so short?RP S1 has 12 episodes summer 2009
RP has been renewed for a 2nd season, starting in 2010!
Sorry, we don't know what month in 2010 it will start yet, but it will be back in summer 2010.
Pretty much all cable shows have shorter seasons (usually around 16 episodes/per season) than network shows (approx. 22 episodes/per season). For the USA Network, most new series only run 12 episodes their 1st season, then if they get renewed the get bumped up to 15/16 epis for their 2nd season. It's possible the 2nd season of RP might be split into 2, since the USA Network splits some of their seasons up, with half the season airing in summer, the rest in winter, like Burn Notice, Psych, Monk, etc, which is why they might seem shorter. Or perhaps, USA will air all the episodes all in the summer, like they do for In Plain Sight. This article explains it pretty well:

Thanks for the insight. I've watched Monk & Psych since each started and never payed attention until I started watching Burn Notice which the seasons aired more frequently than each summer. Could be the fact they have had fewer eps. Guess I haven't loved a show as much as RP in a while so when I was left hanging and saw summer I was shocked.
Thanks for the heads up!

I Know... I still cant believe that we have to wait 9 months before we can see another brand new episode...
That was not really well planed, now that the series was pumped up and people was starting to watch it after only 12 episodes they make us wait almost a year...
I'm mad but I still have to say that this show is really nice and I have really enjoyed this last 12 weeks, cant wait till next summer.
But they could hurry up and release the show earlier... Its a nice show and 9 months is too long.

Well that may be the way USA does their shows but they should have learned from Burn Notice that summer only is dumb. They only did it that way for the first season and after that the seasons were less stretched out. I mean I love Royal Pains and tonight's finale was awesome! But to wait a whole year is asking a bit much. Why should I remember or care after a year? It is only a TV show after all.

I'm pretty disappointed to see tonight that I'll have to wait until NEXT summer to see more of Hank and the gang. I have had so much fun watching this show. I've been thrilled that it starts at 9 pm (CST) so that I've had time to get the kids in bed and I can relax with a few laughs. Really love the show. All the characters are great. Give us more and more often!!!

I was so mad that we have to wait that long to see the other season......All i got to say is that the second season better be a whole lot better than the first even though the first season was good ......

I read your reasoning behind it, but I am still sad and disappointed. What is USA thinking? Having to wait an entire year seems ridiculous. By next summer we will barely be able to remember what happened this past season. I seriously think that the network should rethink the length of times between seasons if it wants watcher to continue to be interested in the same shows!!!

I completely agree with you, they should keep the season going so the people watching don't loose the interest on the show. Of course that they probably will repeat the season a couple of times, which I might watch but is going to be kinda boring.
+ would be kinda interesting to see the Hamptons during winter time...

hi RP TexasFan

just to keep things easier to find on the forum - your post about waiting until next summer was moved into this thread that already talks about waiting until next summer - so it's still here, just in
this thread.
Luckily, the viewers/fans of Monk, Psych, In Plain Sight, Burn Notice, etc. have all survived waiting 10 months to see their shows return (we even survived the writer's strike - which pushed them back even further!), and the really great news is that there will be more episodes of RP next season, instead of 12 episodes, there hopefully will be at least 15-16

THIS SHOW ROCKSUSA Network has awesome shows. Psych and Monk are very well done, and Psych brought in unknown talent.
Royal Pains has a dilemna with Jank, the question is whether Hank needs a romance to make RP a success. I am the first to say more camera time for Jill, but this show can have a little romance and still keep us captivated for 60 minutes. As long as Jill gets to wear those suits! I love her wardrobe. Hank is pretty casual.
I thought the finale left so many loose ends, almost like they thought 1 season was the max it could go. A total implosion, father stole money, Divya leaving, Jank in shambles. Can We Say Major

So far that "crazy strategy" has made them the #1 cable network. It worked with Burn Notice. Their first season was also a short one (13 episodes, I believe.) When they were renewed for season two they were put on the 16 episode split season format that's worked quite well for Monk and Psych too. I don't think Royal Pains will see any ratings drop off because of the long hiatus. Burn Notice certainly didn't. Neither did Monk between the first and second seasons.
The reason USA does it that way, with the shortened first season, is to avoid spending money on something that may be be a flop, like for instance with The Starter Wife, Kojak and Touching Evil. The first season is sort of a test run. Royal Pains passed the test with flying colors so they'll be back with a 16 episode split season, probably matched up with Burn Notice.

Teresa, I think it is bad form to use USA and Flop in the same post. It is OK to use Flop in the same post with the words "Jason Alexander", "Heido Montag-Pratt", "Spencer Pratt", "Andy Richter"......you get the idea!

Personally I think it is disgraceful for USA to wait 9 months until the new episodes of RP. What are they going to do - run re-runs for the 9 months? I can see 3 months of re-runs like burn notice but 9 months? Talk about losing your viewer base. You would think they would see by the ratings that they had a hit on their hands. I hope they reconsider. This is REALLY disappointing!!

What do we have to do or who do we have to write/Kill to get new episodes sooner! This is one of the series from USA Network that has been worth watching and that my wife enjoys. Having to wait until summer of 2010 is insane! Who knows if the actors will still want to do it after that long of a break! Coma USA get with it and get more episodes sooner!

One thing NBC ought to do is use Saturday nights to "repurpose" all of USA Network's shows, since Saturday is a low-rated night anyway. This show is one I would be doing that with the start of the upcoming TV season, airing it on Saturdays on NBC at 9:00 PM ET/PT to give people who never saw it during the summer (and/or don't have cable) a chance to see it.

Yeah I don't like having to wait this long either but I am a Monk and Psych fan and when they had the Writer's Strike, we had to wait 10 MONTHS for new shows!!! But the good news for Royal Pains is that for at least last week and for this week, they're airing the last 2 episodes of Burn Notice and Royal Pains!!!!! I hope they keep airing reruns or keep it On Demand though because I want to get my best friend into Royal Pains as well and she hasn't seen any episodes yet!!!!!

There was a year when HBO took 14 months to air a new season of The Sopranos. Yes a ridiculous 14 months and my husband and I lost complete interest in the show. We forgot what happend in the previous season and stopped watching it. I hope that does not happen with RP. I don't remember USA network waiting a whole year to air the second season of Monk or Psych. I know USA will replay RP's first season closer to the Summer 2010 as a refresher but will this whole decision backfire on them? Who knows. Like one viewer said, it is just a show and they may not care next year. Hope that doesn't happen.

I'm with you and your concern----but are Psych and Monk comparable? I
did read a comment by one member who remembers having to hang on during the writer's strike, and it was agony. But both Monk and Psych were built with story lines that could go on hiatus and keep the fans wanting. Viewers just knew there would be more cases for Adrian to solve, more humor from Gus and Shawn as we all tried to spot the pineapple! Both have a schtick. The difficult part of RP is that they've practically dismembered the whole story in the last episode! ALL the main characters fell apart. I'm kinda p-o'd that the writers haven't given us some reason to hang on.Viewers can be fickle, and it wouldn't take much of a drop in ratings for Season 2 to be torpedoed. So,again, I'm with you--I "hope it doesn't happen".
