I got a chance to see the upcoming episode "The Devil Is In the Details... and in the Upstairs Bedroom", and if anyone here hasn't seen the original "Exorcist" yet, do yourself a favor and rent it! It's not required to understand the episode, but you'll enjoy it so much more when you see how they paid direct homage to many scenes and even specific shots and lines of dialogue. It doesn't air until August 28th so you still have time!

I absolutely love the Exorcist!! It's such a great movie, I don't know how many times I've seen it.
Back when it was made it was considered the scariest movie ever. Some people still think that, for me, yeah it's creepy, but it's not that bad. I love horror movies, so stuff like this is right up my alley.
If you haven't seen it, I would. I mean...they already pay homage to it in the title with the '...and in the Upstairs Bedroom.' And the whole devil thing too. Oh, I can't wait for this episode.

Thanks for the tip!! I haven't seen it in years...might be worth watching again just to refresh my memory. I'm not a fan of horror and slasher type movies, but I LOVED Tuesday the 17th. It'll be worth watching again for Psych, if anything to truly appreciate all the hard work that was put into it.

Oh God, I hate scary movies. I freaked out during Potergiest and almost crapped my pants during the Shining. And I think those are somewhat mild scary movies.

Oh yeah, I almost crapped my pants during I Am Legend too. I'm a wuss.

I do get to see them all early but it's not as great as it sounds. They're rough cuts with stock music, unmixed dialogue, and no special effects. So when I watched Extradition: British Columbia a few weeks ago, instead of lasers I saw Gus trying to get past red string! It's much more enjoyable watching the finished episode.

My face was buried in my mom when I was watching it, or attempted to watch it. I used to watch scary movies then they all just started looking the same (except this one). There are three that I like: American Werewolf in London, Fright Night, and Disturbia (not sure that's really scary, more of a thriller).
Silence of the Lambs was well done but very disturbing.
So ah, Roday, after you finished with all your work and you get a nice break, write some more scary movies for us. I know you'll do a great job (after you finish Gravy of course! I look forward to seeing that movie).

Afterwards, I got up to get a drink, ran into the vacuum (it was dark!) and almost had a heart attack. Next time make sure I turn the lights on first! I just finished watching The Exorcist, thanks USA Admin for the heads up!
For all those asking about how it ranks in terms of horror movies... I have to admit, my frame of reference is fairly small for horror movies (and I'm still not certain what are considered horror movies or not), however I didn't really think this was a 'horror' per say in terms of it not being a 'scare you' someone pops out and kills someone kinda flick.
I think the horror in it is more an intensity which will also rely heavily on religious beliefs and perceptions. As the movie is about possession and exorcism, that's where much of the horror or intensity comes from. Yes, there are some gruesome moments... but, again, it's not a "scare you" kind of horror film in my opinion. However, I go back to my original point of having a fairly small frame of reference for horror films. I have yet to see a film that really scared me. I think the alien popping out in "Alien" is more scary than most of what I've seen, and even that is a more momentary thing.
Helpful? Probably not.

Oh My God! Are you made from stone?! "The Exorcist" is some very scary ***t! I admit that I have a low tolerance for horror (I consider "The Lost Boys" to be scary.) But "The Exorcist" is freak you out, keep all the lights on in the house, sleep with a crucifix scary. For those wondering if they should chance it in order to get all the references for this episode, DON'T. I'm not kidding. You will wish you hadn't. That said, "The Exorcist" is a great movie.

While waiting for True Blood to start last night, I asked the roomful of my friends if anyone wanted to get together to watch The Exorcist in the next couple of weeks... and was met with a chorus of "Yes!"
One of my friends also mentioned that it's the only movie he's ever seen where afterward he had trouble sleeping after... >_> He offered to let me crash at their place after we watch.
...I'm not sure that'll be necessary for me, though. I usually only find scary movies scary while I'm watching them and am ok when they're over and I turn on the light.

"You guys seriously haven't seen The Exorcist?!"
Oh HELL YEAH I've seen it! Loved it! Matter of fact I saw it at the theaters when I was just a kid. Scared the crap out of me!
Question is, are they paying homage to the original film or the re-released "director's cut" version with some stuff that didn't make it into the original release because it was too scary? I loved the original cut, but the new version has one shot that is so damn creepy (the staircase...y'all know what I'm talking about) it almost gave me chills. Which one does Roday love more? Hmmm...
ACUBOUND:
If you want a GREAT psychological horror movie that combines the best elements of a slasher film, watch "Seven" starring Morgan Freeman & Brad Pitt by David Fincher. Right now, it is my favorite movie of all time. The director does so good a job painting such a vivid picture in the viewer's mind that people actually swear they saw more gore/blood than is actually shown on screen. AND there was a "Seven" reference with the "box" in "Murder Anyone? Bueller?" that I believe got cut out.

"On a scale of Signs (not at all scary, kinda more funny, we laughed through most of it) to say, My Bloody Valentine (only saw some of that) where is Exorcist? Signs=1 MBV=10"
It goes to 11. MBV was a piece of crap full of the standard cliche' scare gore tactics. The Exorcist was groundbreaking and original in it's time, and still holds it's own against almost every horror movie made today.
For fans of the genre:
Watch a little independent horror flick called "Splinter" starring the taller & skinnier of the two main characters on Royal Pains. That was a damn good little horror flick with a really unique and original creepy monster!
