Full Version: Insulted by the writers

I've been a loyal fan of Royal Pains, and haven't missed a single episode, but was insulted by the writers use of W.A.S.P. last night. I know the writers were trying to be subtle, but it was very clear by the way Evan delivered the line. I thought USA Network was above these types of petty insults, but I guess I was mistaken.

The Royal Pains writers should ask themselves, would they continue to watch a "cute" show if Louis Farrakon or the Rev. Wright desided to insert Jewish insults into the script? Me either.

Good by!

Wow, maybe relax a little and have a sense of humor about yourself?

I thought that line was hilarious, and I definitely fit into the WASP category.

Though, I know, these days it's in fashion for white people to talk about how oppressed they are huh.gif

dude, i'm insulted by your stupidity. you're a "loyal fan?" the show just started. how "loyal" can you be? do you have a "Hank Med" pillow and jammies?

do you even know what WASP means? try the google. since when did white anglo-saxon protestant denote a slur? by basic definition it's a person with white skin, from a specific region with a certain religious outlook but it's also supposed to mean you're an snotty elitist and if that's a slur, keep it coming.

WASAH - white anglo saxon a hole...now that's an insult!

That is the literal translation but it can be used in a derogatory way. I know some people that proudly call themselves that and others that consider it insulting. I think it's a connotation vs. denotation thing.

for a word to be derogatory to the point of banning it's usage would imply that the vast majority of people acknowledge it as a slur. there are some Blacks who don't like being called Blacks. some Hispanics that don't like being called Hispanic. it's not connoting or denoting anything. it's about taking PC to the extreme. get over yourself and enjoy the show!

In the real life Hamptons I rather suspect racial/ethnic slurs are rather common. I noticed the phrase when it was used and was definitely NOT offended personally or on behalf of my fellow WASPs.

Are most "citidiots" WASPs?

Are you telling me to get over myself? I had no problem with the use of the phrase I was just posting my perspective.

Absolutely agree. When we lifelong New Yorkers rented a house on Fire Island for 15 years, the phrase used for actual East End reisdents where we lived was "Patchagoyim" (since the ferry left from the nearby town of Patchogue.) This is a pretty ingrained part of the Fire Island/Hamptons culture.

I admit it seems rather a slur now, but I blush to say that I giggled when I heard it. These kinds of expressions abound in this heavily NY Jewish summer communities, because we always felt a bit like er, Jews out of water. But I am sorry if a viewer was offended by "WASP." We do all seem to be very touchy about that stuff. And touchy and comedy aren't very comfortable. But I doubt many very many feel insulted, to be frank. No one ever posted a "No dogs or WASPS" sign on their store.
