I thought I'd begin this showcase with a defiantly "satisfied" Maddie. Although it doesn't really appear so from the screencap, this is one of the funniest scenes in the entire series (IMHO). Sharon Gless ROCKS! smile.gif

Maddy is so cool! I can’t remember the name of this episode but Michael was helping Nate save a co-workers sister that was kidnapped. This is one of my favorite exchanges between the two it makes me laugh every time I watch this episode.

Maddy: “ Do you know what Nate’s first word was? It was Michael.”

Michael says, “ I was there. It was juice.

Maddy: Well you know he meant Michael!

I LOVE Maddy!

It's fun to see how much Maddie's character has evolved from the complaining hypochondriac mom to a spunky, supportive mom.

Quick-wit line...."so was World War II, but they still manage to talk about it." (Sins of Omission)

It is good to see Maddies and Michaels relationship heal. Parents sometimes deserve a second chance, she did the best she could under the circumstances and I think both her boys turned out pretty good.

I recently watched the first season and really liked seeing more of Maddie and learning more of the history.

It's so cool to see how there relationship has changed. Before she was just the annoying mother who was always in the way, now she's more helpfull and Michael might even somewhat enjoy talking to her.

I totally agree that Maddie has evolved so much over the past 3 seasons. I considered making the title of this thread:

Maddie Monday
A showcase of manipulation, bad cooking, and nicotine!

...but I just couldn't. Bad cooking? Yes. Nicotine? God, yes. But manipulation? Of course she still uses that ploy when trying to get at Michael, but I feel it has shifted from a selfish place to more of a way to try to somehow protect him and to make him see the "error of his ways".
DuctTape
Maddie taking her manipulating skills to the next level in 3.06 The Hunter:

She instructs Sam and Fi to bring the hostage over to her place and then
succeeds by interrogating with terrifying kindness.

Happy Maddie Monday!!!!

Since this scene was mentioned during last Maddie Monday, I thought I'd share a screencap from it.

Maddie: “Do you know what his (Nate’s) first word was? It was Michael.”

Michael: “It was juice. I was there. His first word was juice."

Maddie: "Well, he was looking right at you when he said it. You know what he meant!"

I loved Sharon's heartbreaking delivery of the line "Why won't it stop?"

Maddie has become the go-to girl, hasn't she? If you think back to the way she was in the beginning - whining and going to the doctor and trying to guilt Michael into seeing her - she's really changed so much. Now Sam can call her to help with a serious gunshot wound, Michael can trust her with his clients' safety, and she's always ready to pitch in and help with his missions. The whole Bingo thing cracked me up.
I think having Michael back in town has helped Maddie as much as it's helped Michael to heal old emotional wounds. Maddie seems to be trying to make up for all the mistakes she made when the kids were little. Trust, she said, is something you have to work on. NOw that she's gained some confidence and is less needy, Michael is more willing to spend time with her to have a beer.
It's so great that she kept two boxes of Michael's stuff from childhood. It was all she had of him for many years. She's giving him a chance to go back and remember some good things from those hard times. He hated that house because of what happened to all of them there but maybe he's learning that you don't have to give everything up from then, that you can heal from the wounds of the past.
Just my Maddie Monday thoughts

I so like it when a TV show develops a character. My all-time favorite was the development of Hot Lips Hoolihan. Went from being a goofy character to one of the guys, which made me like M*A*S*H* even more. In this case, I enjoyed Maddie for being so annoying, but now she's both annoying and useful and she's come to terms with not knowing all about Michael.

Hi everyone, and happy Maddie Monday! What fun screen caps and quotes. I could not imagine anyone else playing this character but Sharon Gless. I mean, how did casting come up with her? I don't know that she's been around much since C&L, though I'm sure she's worked (I'll have to check IMDB). But she is just amazing as Madelaine.

I know a lot of viewers find or found her in the past to be annoying and whiny, which to a certain extent is true. But remember, she has every right to be whiny to Michael. Her eldest son who hasn't contacted her in 8 years, then shows up. Of course she wants him there for Christmas, birthdays, etc. She's going to do all she can to spend time with him and get to know him again, and rely on him again. Plus, more importantly, she's a Mother! Of course she's manipulative! She's gonna play that mother's guilt card as best she can! And, she does it with such leverage, I LOVE it!

Now there was one episode that I totatlly disagreed with her strategy. The one where the "men" came in the house and asked all about Michael. And she wouldn't give him the details until he came over with Fi for dinner. That was childish, and potentially dangerous. Can't remember the ep name off hand...but it was when he ran across the street and the house started on fire. An early ep.

And it turns out she's a great Mom. I loved in Long Way Back when she was going to sell the house and then at the end took it off the market and noted that Michael "hides his clients" there and "lets his friends stay there." She also lets him do that in her house because she loves being part of what's going on. There's nothing worse than not being "in the know" and I think she handles it pretty well. Of course now she's making sure she's a lot more in the know....And I adore her sarcasm. It's great!

ETA: Oh, and cucumber, I liked your reference to Margaret Hoolihan. She totally evolved and it saved her character for sure.

Coffee? Tea? Cigarette?

I love that Maddie is always the consummate hostess. There always seems to be a pot of coffee brewing at the Westen homestead (although, the beverage in this scene happens to be herbal tea). That 1967 model coffee-maker must’ve been something to withstand the constant workload, for that many years! smile.gif

Have a Happy Maddie Monday, All!!!

Happy Maddie Monday!

Maddie has wit, sarcasm and her own funky Miami style. Her endless supply of kicky and kitschy hoop earrings should not be overlooked. They are part of her charm.

A perfect example is the fabulous dolphin hoop earrings she rocks in the interrogation scene. Few people could pull off the look.

I agree with all of you. Maddie really has evolved from the annoying mother who was always in the way, to someone the entire group trusts and relies on. I don't think about it all that much but I can't even count how many times Maddie has saved there as* and there clients. In a way she is a lot like Hot lips Hoolihan, she evolved into someone a lot less annoying than she originally started with, Although IMHO she's still pretty annoying.

Happy Maddie Monday!!!

I think Sharon Gless is precious in this scene from Bad Breaks. At Maddie's house, near the end of the episode, she is initially disappointed that Michael is leaving before they can order takeout. When he decides to stay, this sweet smile lights up her face!

Very sweet Michael staying for dinner and making his mom happy. Great after the funny moment of seeing that Michael hid Bly's file in the broiler oven, knowing how little she uses it.

Yes, I do love Maddie. And if she was not so annoying and manipulative, Michael would not be such a good spy. At the same time, I am enjoying how as as mom and son reconcile, she is calming down with him and redirecting those skills against his adversaries.

Yes it's a holiday. Not only is it Labor Day, but it's also Maddie Monday. Happy Maddie Monday everyone.

I looked around and saw that no one put in one of my favorite Maddie/Sam scenes. Yes the one from Lesser Evil.

Maddie works out to an old exercise video.

Caught by Sam and throwing the weights down.

"It's time for an emergency trip to Disney World."
"Why in God's name would I want to go to Disney World?"
"Because it's a magical kingdom with lots of witnesses and great security."

And then the bit following this when Maddie plops herself in the chair that I had a terrible time getting a screencap of because every one had a weird look on her face. But the fantastic part was:
"Ah. Ooh. Well. The sooner you explain, the sooner we'll be off to Cinderella's castle."

I think I like Maddie with an attitude where she stands up to Michael and Fi and Sam treating her with kit gloves, like she wouldn't understand. And I think I've become addicted to screencapping. biggrin.gif

Again, Happy Maddie Monday everyone!!!
LillyHobbs
See those pictures behind Maddie? Any chance one of you techies can isolate and blow one or two up? I know they'll get real grainy but maybe we could just see who they are? Does that big one look like a woman holding a baby? Sharpening tool, anyone? I can't even screencap yet or else I'd try.

Happy Belated Maddie Monday!

As a mom, Maddie knows (probably all too well) how things don't always go the way you want but here, if I remember correctly, she does get to have a moment with her son as she brings two beers from episode 3.08 Friends Like These:

In the picture where Maddie is bent over exercising, there is a book on top of the television. The book title is Dynasty of ???. The book has a book mark or place hoder in it as if she had been reading it. Can anyone with better eyes than mine read the last word in the title.

I haven't rechecked it recently, but I believe at the time of the original airing I pegged it as "Dynasty of Death," the first novel by Taylor Caldwell. She wrote a lot of historical fiction.
