I don't visit very often, but I'm so exasperated, here I am! I'd really like USA Admin to explain to the faithful LOCI viewers - you know the viewers, the people who watch - what's going on with regards to Season 9. August 3rd you said you were 'close to a deal'. September 1st on Twitter you posted that 'negotiations' were still going on, since then all we've had is a big fat silence. If you're not renewing, fine, be a brave little soldier and tell us so, although you'd better mention it to Jeff Goldblum who thinks he's going back to the set 'this month or next'. Leaving us just 'hanging' for all this time is completely unacceptable. What the hell happened to the network that 'loved' Criminal Intent...for all of one season - and that would be season 7; season 8 seemed to be left to it's own devices, with little or no promotion by the network, despite getting good ratings - and that would be thanks to the viewers of course, who are still out here, waiting, but some won't wait forever..............

I'm embarrassed by TheReelblog, who with no real news to broadcast has just posted an announcement that "Men In Black" will air on TNT sometime in September, which it has done several times before. I'd rather a long dry spell from them than TheReelblog becoming TNT's pimp. I'm surprised I haven't seen ads for TNT on the website. It's a sad day for them.

USA Network is finalizing a deal to bring Law & Order: CI back for a ninth season, but there's a catch. Actually there are a few catches. Here's what I'm hearing… * Julianne Nicholson is out. The actress, who recently gave birth to her second child, has opted not to return. Saffron Burrows (My Own Worst Enemy) has emerged as the frontrunner to replace her.

* Burrows would be partnered with Jeff Goldblum, although his deal is also not 100 percent done.

* Where does that leave Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe? The CI vets are in talks to return in some capacity.

I don't know but it makes me nervous! That phrase makes it sound like much less screen time

I'm sad Julianne's decided to leave, but I understand why...I think that her character was just coming into her own, and she had a good rapport with Nichols, which I will miss. And that phrase "in some capacity"?? VDO's working on a new movie, The Irishman, which might have something to do with the amount of time he has to film LOCI.

Yeah I never understood that too, sounds like something you say when you apply for workerman's comp or something.

Call me skeptical, but I found something odd with that article:

If JN is leaving, did anyone stop to think that this is part of her maternity leave? I'm no union expert but I think most mothers are granted about a year's leave, give or take a few weeks. (that's what happened to my 6th grade teacher, she left mid-school year and didn't come back till around the end of the next year or later - sorry my memory's a bit fuzzy)

the irishman actually finished filming a couple of months ago. But he does have a few other things in the pipelines so who knows. hopefully we find out soon.

I will say that there must be some reason USA hasn't made a formal announcement. I gonna guess it's riding on VDO and KE. I hope USA realizes that we pretty much all like and accept JG. But if they dump the two characters that so many have invested so much time. Well they might as well say bye bye to LOCI after season 9, because most of the viewers will be gone .

Here's my thought on the "in some capacity" comment. If VDO and KE's roles were extremely pared down from prevous seasons, it would come to a point where they would not be worth the cost to pay them. Therefore I think it's going to come out as an even split of episodes, just like last time. I could be wrong, thoug. . .

split season? maybe jeff will do the first portion and vincent will come in later to film his portion when he's done with other commitments? just thinking out loud.

If KATHRYN ERBE is not in any new LOCI episodes then I'm finished with the series.......but she'll be back.... ......

I agree with you there, I think the problem is that some people think that just because there's two teams on the show, they see it as a competition. A 'who's gonna outshine who' thing when really they're all talented in their own right.

I do have a question about this Ausiello guy, does he have inside access to this sort of info, or is it just rumor? I'm not trying to offend him or any of his readers, it's just that I don't read his column so I was just curious.

I feel no reason to feel alarm. They haven't said anything about VDO and KE, so who knows? Maybe there's just no changes there.

Every season is the same, rumors and rumors, Nicholson´s departure was a sure thing, I believe she should have returned in the first place and it´s bad because Wheeler and Nichols had a type of chemistry and a good partnership and VDO´s uncertainty is the main problem, I believe he will return.

Mmm, that sounds like a long time. Is this normal or should we be worried?

Well, last year season 7 ended August 24th and we got new eps all the way in April... It's kinda earlier this time... So I don't see why we should worry (jmo)


And frankly since that thread "VDO transition out of CI", I had the feeling that it was for real this time.
But what can we really do? Well, just wait and see. In the meantime, we can enjoy what we have of them two. And if they aren't in like half of the eps next season, we'll just have to cherish the fewer eps they are featured in.
These news hurt really but we are gonna have to deal with might eventually come (if this means what we think it means)

To me, there's actually a little bright side; B/A will be leaving together. It would really really really suck if Bobby was gone and Eames was still there or vice versa...

Hmmm. It seems like there are a lot of ambiguities this time around. I don't like the phrase "in some capacity."

I could see them transitioning VDO out of the show and eventually working an Eames/Nichols pairing. I don't know if they would retain the split cast or not.

Nine seasons is a long time to run on any show, and although I will be saddened if Goren, or Eames, or both left, it is Law and Order. Therefore we should expect cast changes. Goren and Eames are the second longest running partnership in franchise history (next to Benson and Stabler). Really they might the longest running partnership in terms of number of episodes.

I think that I've made my peace with losing either VDO or KE or both. Like I said, it would be really sad, but the good thing is that JG seems to be able to hold up the ratings somewhat. I really like the concept of this show, and do not want to see it go away (along with the motherhsip and SVU).

Well, it's a bit like on the Mothership: there have been "phases" and different partners. And they didn't seem to worry too much about transitions back in the 90s. They would put a couple of lines in a episode and *poof* that's how they explained this or that partner left. If I remember correctly, the whole transition would seldom take more than one episode anyway...

I think cast changes can't really be avoided. They can only be post-poned. I am happy VDO -and if she leaves, I suppose KE too- will have more time to work on other projects, because even though I am not an actor, I can understand that sticking with the same character for so many years (8 would be long enough for me) might not be appealing in the end as it was when it all started. As well as Goren could be portrayed, or the character developed, I believe the challenges of an actor are also confronting oneself with different characters and different stories.

Now... as JN is leaving too -and no comments on that, I totally second her leaving after 2 maternities- I think a little transition is necessary, just because they can't really leave JG on his own right after his first season, lol, that would be a bit odd, I think.

What do they mean by split season? split between the two teams or will they air some episodes, have a break and then air the rest of the season?

I thought they did that, E&G film for so many weeks, then N&W film the same? Or maybe I read Kate's interview where they work 7 days on and 7 off, don't quote me on that though! Sort of like a nurses shift.

I find it quite bizarre that USA Twitter page posts a link to the rumor-mill (with that 'in some capacity' remark lurking there about Vincent and Kathryn) and then blithely add they can't confirm or deny any of it! I guess we have to hold on to the fact they're saying Season 9 will 'tentatively' air in March 2010....although this would be the same network that told us we'd get Season 8 starting in November 08, let TV Guide put the info in it's issue for the announced date and then changed it's mind. I'll dust off the DVD recorder around July 2010 then, in preparation for Vincent episode one, season 9 (I live in hope ) Who knows, maybe this time around, USA will stop behaving like Jeff Goldblum is the only actor on the show and give some promotion time (and respect) to the 2 people who have been there since Day 1 of 'One' - Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe. Please heaven the new writers find their feet and start producing scripts worthy of the acting talent they're writing for too.

I've been waiting for them to make CI a little more like SVU with respect to how they do the partnerships. On SVU everyone has their main partner, but then they work with the other people. Which on SVU everyone is in every ep.

It would be nice to have more partner swapping. I think that would keep the show fresh both for the actors and for the viewers.

And they could do something whereveryone ends up working with each member of the other team twice, and their partner four times twice.

Here's my idea for a rundown for how this world work by episode:

I'm hoping that after the Season 8 fiasco, they will do a better job aobut setting and sticking with a release date.

They should really just keep "CI" on the same April-August schedule it had this year (all the episodes straight through except for no episodes Memorial Day weekend or July 4). That to me would make the most sense.

Surprised to hear about Saffron Burrows already as the potential replacement, as I heard about Ms. Nicholson leaving, but zero about her replacement.

One thing I could see happen if VDO does decide to leave:

Ice-T moves his character of Odafin Tutuola from "SVU" to "CI" to replace VDO, bringing his fans with him. It is something I thought might actually have been done last season when Chris Noth left, in part because of the way "Cold" (the season nine "SVU" finale) was written, as I believe the "SVU" writers at that point knew Noth was leaving "CI" and it was possible that Ice-T would have moved to "CI" at that point.
