I think you are wrong about the "phenomenal ratings" According to "E" the ratings are dropping each week.
Me wrong about ratings? I don't think so. If indeed you saw that on "E" they were definitely wrong. In fact the ratings grew from week 1 to week 2 and from week 2 to week 3. This is pretty much unheard of on cable. Almost every other show (in fact I can't think of any other exceptions) experiences a drop off in ratings from the pilot. It was true for
Burn Notice and
In Plain Sight and
Psych and
The Starter Wife (which eventually dropped so far it had to be canceled) and even Monk way back when.
Excerpt from The Live Feed'Royal Pains' hits ratings highJune 19, 2009
The third episode of USA's freshman drama "Royal Pains" jumped 17% from last week, setting a new high water mark.
"Pains" (6.5 million viewers, 2.1) has grown with each episode and climbed 11% in the adult demo from its "Burn Notice" lead-in (5.8 million, 1.9). "Notice" was up too -- growing 19% from last week.
The shows were the highest rated programs on cable and ranked only behind Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" among broadcast shows. "Pains" more than doubled the rating of NBC's drama "The Listener" in the 10 p.m. hour.

Despite a strong showing from TNT’s The Closer, USA Network retained its post at the head of the cable ratings race last week, averaging 3.35 million viewers.
For the week ended June 14, USA also swept the top three demos, averaging 1.49 million adults 25-54, 1.37 million viewers 18-49 and 568,000 18-34s.
USA’s stay at the top was
powered by its newbie original drama Royal Pains, which drew 5.59 million viewers in its Thursday 10 p.m. time slot, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day ratings data. The second episode drew added around 20,000 viewers to its premiere tally, and showed similar gains among the demos, delivering 2.6 million adults 25-54 (up 3 percent) and 2.35 million viewers 18-49 (up 2 percent).

Full ArticleI assure you those are great ratings and USA is quite pleased with the performance of
Royal Pains. It has consistently out performed
Burn Notice which is itself considered a big hit for USA. Both shows are strong contenders against the Broadcast Network fare, finally beginning to bridge a gap that cable has been shooting for since its inception.
Now I'm not saying that Evan is the sole reason for the PHENOMENAL ratings, but apparently he hasn't hurt them one bit. He's an integral part of a highly successful show. Last season? I'm betting they're drawing up the contract for season two as I type, that is if it isn't already signed.
