As a person of color, I think "mulatto" and "colored" can be considered offensive. Mulatto comes from the Spanish meaning "small mule". That's offensive in my book. I consider colored to be outdated. There are better terms to use so as not to offend others on the board.
Also, I think the show has dealt well with race. I thought Shawn's comment about a black Jesus was funny since historically he probably wasn't white or black. As for Buzz's profiling, I never caught that moment until I noticed it in a rerun. I can see how it can be seen as distasteful but I think they dealt with it humorously.
Personally, I'd like to see more Hispanics on tv. Although we did get Lou Diamond Phillips and "Lights, Camera... Homocido" (even though that could be taken as a complete caricature of Hispanic culture).
to clarify, i meant "colored" as covering all the bases of the races, from white to black and everything in between. as a mulatto, i do not find the term at all offensive, nor will i EVER. i've never come across another mulatto who has been offended by the term, or has called themselves anything else. also, from wikipedia sources:
The origin of the term is that it derives from "mula", the Spanish word for mule, once a generic designation name for any hybrid. As a result, it is considered offensive by some English-speakers, who might prefer the term "biracial" instead. Interestingly, Spanish-speakers do not consider "mulatto" offensive. An alternate etymology traces mulatto to the Arabic muwallad, which means "a person of mixed race or ancestry"
i never really thought that psych was lacking in the diversity section. keep in mind that this show is in santa barbara, where the population consists of 75% white people, lol. taking that in mind, i think it's working out well when it comes to putting in people of different races.
also, not to annoy, but i honestly do not understand why "colored" is offensive, but "of color" is not...?
