having the similarity noticing skills i have, i am seeing a very simple parallel between Evan and Divya when compared to Howard and Penny (from The Big Bang Theory).
the facts:
- Evan has a thing for Divya, Howard has a thing for Penny
- Evan always hits on Divya, Howard always hits on Penny
- Divya always rejects Evan and is annoyed by his comments, Penny always rejects Howard and is annoyed by his comments
- Evan and Divya are connected by one individual whom they both value a lot (Hank), Penny and Howard are connected by one individual whom they both value a lot (Leonard)
if this continues, I believe that at some point Evan and Divya will have a conversation like in that in The Killer Robot Instability (Big Bang Theory, season 2 episode 12) that will connect them
but overall i cant see them ending up together (maybe only at the series finale)

hopefully before the series finale! haha. but now, that you say that, i guess it would make sense..well, as long as we have glimpses of couple-ness (wow, i can write lol) then it's ok
and on another note, they had their first "date" last epi at the restaurant. that would make a great fanfiction, what happened after Hank left, haha.

Does anyone else here know of a show back in th '80's called "Moonlighting" starring Cybill Sheperd and Bruce Willis? Evan and Dyvia (sp!) kind of remind me a little bit of the characters played by Cybill Sheperd and Bruce Willis on "Moonlighting" (Maddie Hayes and David Addison respectively). Here's why:
1.) Divya and Maddie: They are like each other because they like to get things done, no matter what.
2.) Evan and David: Evan is just like an exact replica of David. Both are pretty much goofballs, smart alecky, everything.
Both couples are alike because of their bickering towards each other. In the beginning of the "Moonlighting" series, David and Maddie would constantly be fighting and it was hilarious to see them do it. Here's how that would go pretty much every episode (with a few exceptions): David would already be in the office and Maddie would often come in and find him doing something hilarious (in one episode, she walks in on him doing the limbo with the other co-workers for example). Angry, Maddie would walk into her office. David would follow her in. They would start to yell and bicker at each other, often resulting in Maddie throwing stuff from her office at David and telling him to get out. Later in the episode, one would apologize to the other (or they would both apologize to the other) and solve the case from there (or at least try to, often times they would have more than one fight, thus they would start to bicker again). Evan and Divya do seem to have somewhat of a pattern like that. I haven't quite figured out what it is yet but they seem to usually have a fight of some sort, then one would need the other for something, that person would then do what was needed in exchange for something else, and then continue bickering. Anyone else here see the similarities besides me?

Comparing Divya to Maddie is reaching... and far. There is an art to being the serious, type A, straight man (or woman) while still having the audience cheer for the character. Even when Cybill was at her angriest there was always something that made you want to like her. The Divya character does not have that. I do not think it is a flaw in the character, who obviously has some sympathetic parent issues, but with the actress. On the other hand Evan is played masterfully and if they get a stronger character to play counterpoint to him, the show will have a true ensemble cast.
The show has potential and I am hoping it continues to grow stronger throughout the season.

I don't know the actress either, it's just that since I'm an actress myself, I can kind of "read" characters and can somewhat predict what may happen. But yeah I would love to see them get together because they're total opposites which is what makes it hilarious!

hmm, in the epi he said he wanted them to sort out their differences, but you may be right about the "dinner date" part. i agree with you that he'd be ok with it, he seems like a pretty easygoing guy. maybe a little awkward to be the odd co-worker out, though.

I agree that Hank arranged the dinner so they could work out their differences, not as a possible romantic setup. Despite Even and Divya not wanting him to know they had been arguing about him, I think Hank caught on and that's why he arranged the dinner. If they don't work out their differences, it could hurt the business.
That being said, it would be pretty hilarious to have them be a couple. Poor Divya would really be sticking it to her parents then, not only is she going against their wishes with her career, but I imagine getting involved with a non-Indian would not go over so well with them. And that would certainly give Hank something else to fret about...

That's why I said earlier that Evan and Divya, if they got together, would put him in an odd yet interesting situation. It would be interesting because she would be with his brother and if they broke up, he might be caught in the middle. Also, if Divya's parents didn't want her seeing a non-Indian, that would give Hank something else to fret about. It would be interesting to see how he would handle both situations.

Actually, just from the pilot I had a strong inkling that the two will eventually hook up. Even before the last episode in which we saw more of their bickering, I've been fairly sure that they will. I can't quite remember what made me think that--maybe a quick comment divya said back to evan.
anyway, I'm definitely rooting for divan so far! their bantering is so funny and snappy. Personally, I don't think the actress's acting has been weak at all. I kinda just hope for the sake of the actress's popularity w/ the audience that the writers don't cross the line from her being understandably annoyed at evan to bitchy for no reason... right now i kinda read her character as a woman who knows what she wants, and who is determined to succeed and make it on her own terms after a couple failed attempts already

For those that like Evan (he is such a distraction and stupid) give him a spin off and bring in an intelligent foil with a mature humor instead of "Road Trip" stupidity and "Screch" (Saved By the Bell) inability to learn and social ineptness!

Firstly I love the show.
Remind me of Moonlighting? No way. Royal Pains is the bizarro world's version of the early years of Northern Exposure. Almost all the basic set-ups of RP are the opposite of NE.
I see that USA Network has a new show where a convict is "freed" to help the FBI. Isn't that a re-hash of old the Robert Wagner series "It Takes A Thief"?

no i picked up on some sort of tension too in a few episodes... I know that I said here that I really like evan and divya, but hank and divya intrigue me too. I have to say though, that I don't think that the writers are going to pull a girl-2 brothers love triangle. Unless the writers decide to be super unpredictable, she's going to be w/ evan, and her relationship w/ hank will be steered in a more, older mentor-teaches-younger protege professional and personal lessons direction.
i think, that she and hank have a more mature understanding/empathy of each other--sort of like what I think the writers are trying to do w/ hank and jill but w/ some actual substance. Meanwhile, I think that she and evan have a less serious relationship so far.
So, I'm intrigued in hank and divya too....

I personally think there's a lot of pointing by the writers to Evan and Divya becoming a couple... especially with this week's episode seeing Divya spontaneously kiss Evan (albeit for the potentially noble reason of sparing him from a beat-down). Whether it happens this season or (please God let there be a --) next season, I still think it'd make for some interesting writing to mellow both Evan and Divya's characters a bit.
BTW, thanks to the writing crew for throwing the proverbial "spanner" in the works with Jill's husband reappearing. Argh! But nice touch...
