I watch with my health professional wife who seems to buy into all the technicalities. I spent 17 years in TV and radio in North Carolina and find that the mansion exterior you use looks a lot like a little place I've visited few times near Asheville, NC. I also wonder about some of the beaches. I taught near Manteo-Nags Head, NC but I also remember that there was a vibrant film community in Wilmington, down in the southern coast of the state. So, where do you guys shoot most of your exteriors?

Except for some of the pilot, the entire show is shot on location in and around New York.

The mansion Hank lives in looks like Oheka castle in Syosett NY, about 50 miles west of the south folk of long island. It is the second largest residence in the US. Twice as big as Hearst
castle but no one seems to know about it.

I think that's where it is, too. The Biltmore House (in Asheville) that it resembles is a private residence open to the public, whereas the Oheka Castle is now a hotel. It's very likely they were both designed by the same architect (William Morris Hunt) with their gardens laid out by Frederick Law Olmstead. Biltmore is easily 20 years older, so it's possible a newer architect took inspiration from Hunt's design, given Oheka's lines are cleaner and a bit more Beaux Arts than Biltmore's. And of course, in addition to being the largest private residence n the country, the Biltmore Estate has the country's largest privately owned forest, part of Olmstead's design for the property.
BTW, Hearst Castle is well down the list in terms of size, and never presents itself in those terms. Its claims to fame are its architecture (by Julia Morgan, who also designed Los Angeles Union Station) and its unrivaled collection of European furniture and fittings.

I thought exactly the same thing when I was watching. I was really looking hard at that house trying to compare it in my mind with the Biltmore estate. I have had the pleasure of visiting Biltmore a couple of times. It is truly amazing, especially in the springtime. I agree with the previous post. It quite possibly was designed by the same architect. Alot of similarities.

(I had posted this last night, but It does not seem to have actually been posted)
Hank's residence is definitely OHEKA Castle in Syosset / Woodbury, NY. (A good hour at least from the Hamptons).
I used to work production for private events and have worked at OHEKA many many times - the place is huge and really amazing.
All of the shots that I have seen in the gardens, front, back, and side of the castle are definitely OHEKA. (I believe the indoor pool is OHEKA, but the pool in the opening credits where hank rises from the water and then turns around with the ocean behind him is completely blue-screened in. There is no pool in that location and OHEKA is most definitely not on the ocean. -It is actually on the north shore of Long Island, too, not the south shore).
I guess Otto Kahn was not as special as William Randolph Hearst, so OHEKA doesn't get as much notoriety as Hearst Castle, despite its size.
Though I am not too familiar with the Hamptons, I have done alot of work out there as well and I am fairly certain that the aerial shots of the large Hampton estates are, in fact, the Hamptons. I am pretty sure that one, which I have seen more than once, is Meadow Lane in Southampton and I believe you can see a large home owned by Calvin Klein and another house I think I saw on a recent episode was an aerial shot of this gigantic (150,000 sq ft +) mansion built by Ira Rennert in Sagaponack. (In case anyone wanted the additional information.)
Lastly, the motel that he stayed in in the first episode.. I am pretty sure this is a real motel in Quogue or something (I remember seeing a place like that once, but I am not sure if it was called "Hampt-Inn" - I doubt it.)
I'd say that nearly all, if not all, of the footage we have seen was filmed in Long Island.

Did anybody recognize the mansion at Old Westbury Gardens in the episode with Margaret Colin?
And how about Northport, down by the Harbor when Evan was walking the dogs? I saw Skippers and Hengstenberg's Florist in the background.
I'm wondering about a scene shot in a restaurant. Could that have been the Old Dock Inn in Kings Park?
My family enjoys this show. Now that we've recognized a few places, we're gertting a kick out of watching a second or third time to just look at the backgrounds to see if we can figure out where the filming took place.
Who can answer these questions?

The motel is actually called the Catalina Beach Club on long island. And the motel is closer to New York City than the show says it is.

Did anyone recognize the back of CW Post Campus in the equestrian episode? There was a long shot up the hill which is where the workers from the day camp behind the campus park. My daughter formally attended and worked at the day camp it was a kick to see. We now watch every episode to see how many locations we can recognize. We just never realized we all now live in the Hamptons. LOL!

Tuckers house is at the very end of surfside drive in bridghampton, right on the water in perfect waterfront real estate.

It is Oheka Castle but it is in Cold Spring Hills not Syosset. It use to be Eastern Military Academy and it is gorgeous.

Yeah Northport was filmed again. Don't know about the restaurant but I so love watching this show to pick out placeson L.I. Don't think it was the OLd Dock Inn though.
Julia Roberts filmed a scene for the movie Eat,Pray.Love in Huntington Station the other night. That was cool. Movie will be out next year. I hope they film in NPT again.

I thought it would be a good idea to correct the actual location of Oheka Castle. It is in Huntington., NY not in Syosset or Woodbury. My niece had her wedding there and it is an amazing place. Check it out:
http://www.oheka.com/index.phpThe other bit of location information I have is that the actual beach scenes (walk on the sand near the water) scenes are filmed in Long Beach, at least that 's what was printed in the NY/LI paper, Newsday. The reason they gave was that the residents of the Hamptons did not want the cast, crew and equipment on the beach in the Hamptons.

Syosset.. Woodbury... Huntington... everyone is so picky! :-)
(I actually think I meant to say "Woodbury or Syosset, NY" - not sure what happened to me.) I did not realize it was in Huntington. What's a few blocks one way or another?)
CHELSEA MANSION
Also, if anyone is interested:
In the final episode, the house where the woman has the hallucinations is actually the Chelsea Mansion in East Norwich, NY. The home is owned by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums and is used for private events and the like. I used to do some work for the county and had several meetings at that location.

You're right. It's hard to tell exactly where it is when you're driving down Jericho Tpke/Rt.25. And a few blocks either way could be any of the towns you named. The only reason I knew it was Huntington because my niece had her wedding there and that's what it said on the invitation and it's also the address they use on their website.
