I don't like Yoplait because it's too sweet. I generally get the generic brands that have active cultures. They are pretty good and generally less expensive. I buy all the flavors so I have variety but like the berry ones: cherry, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry.....

Have you tried Activia? It tastes pretty good & it helps improve your digestive system.

I don't get why the character Michael Westen seems to eat only Yogurt. I know that the Causacks (Russians) have a staple diet of it and can claim longevity of 100+ years (longest was 150 years before he came to USA and ate our food and died) but why does the character eat it exclusively. And where did you read that "aspartame" causes cancer in HUMANS? It was lab rats BIG difference. And it was mega-doses not a few teaspoons in some Yogurt cup. Trust me aspartame is just fine to consume or the FDA would have pulled it from the shelves by now.
One good thing about Yogurt is that the bacteria culture (Lactobacillus bulgaricus) in it helps your digestive system and helps you to be regular. Is that why you like it?
FYI - Yogurt is produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. Fermentation of the milk sugar (lactose) produces lactic acid, which acts on milk protein to give yogurt its texture and its characteristic tang. So you can not escape the complex carbohydrate SUGAR with Yogurt. They only add sweeteners for taste to overcome the "tang" flavor of natural Yogurt.
QUOTE
You can make your own Yogurt: easily produced in the home kitchen without any special equipment except for a thermometer. The basic steps in yogurt making are to heat milk to 185 °F, cooling it to 110 °F, stir a starter of live Yogurt cultures (usually lactobacillus bulgaricus and/or streptococcus thermophilus) or a small amount of plain Yogurt (from previous batch or store-bought), ferment at 110 °F for 7 hours, and then chill overnight in a refrigerator. The heating of the milk can be accomplished via direct heat using any number of kitchen appliances. A double boiler or water jacket is ideally suited because it provides very consistent heat without burning. A microwave oven can also be used, but the milk must be first placed in a heat-proof non-metallic container. Using a cold water bath will quickly lower the milk temperature to 110 °F.
Once the mixture is cooled to 110 °F, the starter is added and the mixture is kept as close to 110 °F as possible for 7 hours. During this period, the active cultures consume the lactose in the milk, curdling it, and creating lactic acid. Lactic acid is what gives yogurt its distinctive tangy flavor. The longer the mixture sits, the thicker and more tangy it will become. To maintain the milk with bacteria at this warm temperature, a cooking thermometer and an oven are often used. Alternatives include the use of a thermos, special yogurt-making machines (to make larger quantities of yogurt), microwaves, and even heating pads.
Additionally, some nonfat-dry milk may be added to thicken the end product and if one wishes to increase the nutritional content of the yogurt (this is added before the yeast culture or active yogurt is added to the milk). Good results can be obtained by boiling water, cooling it and adding non-fat dry milk powder to the desired consistency, especially for making lassi* which needs the consistency of buttermilk. However, the organic natural yogurt contains only milk and live active cultures.
* Lassi - South Asian drink with yogurt with water, salt, pepper, ice and spices.

My friend mjstinger103: My fav is Brown Cow, 2nd choice is Stonyfield Farms both organic and available from Whole Foods and even my local Walmart. Dannon is okay and yo-baby is packaged for babies but isn't too sweet( also handy 4 oz size). To appease the sugar monster it's really easy to add a few berries and sweetener of choice(honey?) to plain yogurt. I have been eating yogurt for decades and yes Ive even made my own. My suggestion is to try your favorite flavor in every brand available to you that meets your wife's approval. Everyone's taste is different and your fav will become obvious to you. Cheers!

I actually make my own yogurt because I love the milk I get from a nearby creamery. And I can also control how much or little sweetness there is to the yogurt. I always make plain yogurt and then add a spoon of my homemade jam in when I'm getting ready to eat it. My favorite is blackberry.

It's so amazingly good, homemade yogurt - and it actually isn't very hard to do! You need to heat the milk to just about boiling and then let it cool down until it's between 95-108 degrees, I think it is? I always just aim for 105 degrees, so I'm not sure but could check on that for you. Anyway, you add either a store bought yogurt or add actual yogurt starter (which looks a little like yeast but is the culture for the yogurt) to the milk. Then you put it in the container and turn on the yogurt maker and that's it! You leave it in the yogurt maker for between 6-9 hours generally (depending on what kind of milk you use; skim milk requires a longer "set" time for the yogurt).
I have a Salton yogurt maker -
this isn't a Salton but looks exactly like mine. But there are lots of different kinds of yogurt makers out there. I ordered mine from the King Arthur Flour company in Vermont, but as you can see there are lots of them on amazon.
As for store bought yogurts - I really like that La Creme yogurt by Dannon. It's in strawberry only, I think? That's the only one I've seen at my grocery, anyway. It's a whole milk yogurt. I also like the whole milk yogurts by Stoneyfield Farms. This yogurt has a little layer of cream on the top that is very yummy! The blueberry one is my favorite.

I eat fat-free, no sugar added light yogurt. But,no matter the brand, it all has too much aspartame and is sickly sweet. So, I take a coffee filter and line a colandar and fill it with Dannon All-Natural Nonfat Plain yogurt (which contains only skim milk, pectin, and active cultures so is healthy but a little watery and very TART by itself.) After setting overnight, the whey has drained out and the yogurt is thicker, more like sour cream. Then I add 6 ounces of this to 6 ounces of Yoplait Light Fat-free No-sugar-added Very Cherry. It's perfect.

Not too sweet, not too runny, half as much aspartame
per serving. But, still Very Cherry.
And I thought that was a lot of work but I didn't realize people around here were making their own. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a home Yogurt-maker. Way to go, Philippa! Guess Michael should be glad Fi will eat it right out of the carton, even if she makes a face at Blueberry. Especially since he seems to supply her with all the yogurt she can eat. (I forget the ep. name but y'all know the one I mean.)

I like getting those bigger containers of vanilla yogurt, and then putting it in a bowl, and "fixing it up".

Cut up strawberries to put in (seriously, the fruits in the bottoms of those little yogurt containers are disgusting, but fresh fruit? Yuuuuum!), or raspberries, or mango, or strawberries and mango (heavenly!), or maybe some chocolate...
Most flavored yogurt I really can't stand except for vanilla, but flavoring it myself with REAL fruit, that is amazingly good.

It seems my yogurt eating is kind of boring compared to some of these interesting posts.
I usually eat Dannon Light and Fit, pretty much any flavor. My faves include Vanilla, White Chocolate Raspberry, Strawberry Banana, Lemon, and Lime.
I also eat Weight Watchers nonfat yogurt occasionally, but don't buy it as much because there doesn't seem to be as big a variety at the grocery stores. The Amaretto Cheesecake, Berries and Cream, White Chocolate Raspberry, Vanilla, Black Cherry, Lemon Cream Pie, and Strawberry Banana are all yummy.

I don't have a favourite brand, but I'll eat any of them if they're hazelnut. I LOVE hazelnut yoghurt! I do enjoy various fruit ones and I do try to stay healthy by checking out sugar/fat content etc (which is pointless - my other passion is chocolate!). But, at the end of the day, I'll go with what I like regardless of the brand.
And as an aside of sorts, is it me or are the yoghurts in the States absolutely massive? On the show, whenever Fi is holding a pot, it looks huge! Although I thought it could be because she's so tiny....maybe it's a perspective thing. But now I'm not so sure. Anyway, those yoghurt pots look like family size. Are they really that big? Or are they made especially for the show?! Enquiring minds need to know!

The only flavored yogurt I'll buy from any merchant. Spega La Natura Low Fat Yogurt is by far one of the best yogurt I've found. Imported from Italy, Spega yogurt is made of cow's milk and is available at Trader John's in a few flavors and combinations. I love their Coffee, Cinnamon & Ginger and their Mixed Berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries).
They come in duos. Two 150g (5.3 ounces each). All natural. Made with Bifidobacterium, Lacidophilus and 0.5% milk fat. The fruit (sweetened) is in the bottom. You stir it and presto. They have a lovely texture and flavor and come in these cute little glass jars that are not only recyclable but also the perfect vehicles for off the cuff home jam making efforts. Just top them with plastic wrap and a rubber band in a rush. You can re-use them in the kitchen and garden and they hold a small tea light nicely too.

Wow...you people are hardcore! Making your own yogurt, straining it thru coffee filters (just making coffee is too much work for me), I mean, wow. Personally, I'm not a huge yogurt fan, but it is quite a handy on the go breakfast. I'm all over black cherry and strawberry banana. The more sugar (or aspartame) the better as far as I'm concerned. In my opinion, life is too short to worry about what you eat. If it's delicious, eat it. That could be why I love nutella and fluff sandwiches, lard fried chips, and some whole milk to wash it all down.

I typically tend to stay with Trader Joe's selections-organic, non-fat, etc. When I am desperate, as I always keep a few in the house, I will eat a Light&Fit. My favorite flavors are peach and vanilla. However, I often eat plain organic no-fat yogurt and mix in granola. I'd like to attempt making my own yogurt. Yoplait-many years ago, I did eat them-way too much sugar.

Despite the sugar, I LOVE Yoplait original. And, yes, blueberry is one of my favorites. The new blueberry acai is awesome, too! I only eat one per day, so I don't worry too much about the sugar - It's usually the only sugar I eat daily except for fruit. It's still better for you in moderation than artificial sweeteners. Sometimes I go for the Yoplait Light, but only if that's all that is available (like in the cafeteria at work).
So, go ahead and enjoy one a day!

When I was a teen Blueberry yogurt and blueberry muffins were my favorite. Then I went to stay with relatives in New Zealand. They might have discovered Blueberries by now, but back then in the early 80's, there were no Blueberries in New Zealand and I had to go without. So I discovered Mango yogurt and scones with tea. MMMMMM! Then I came back and of course back then Mangos had not yet been discovered by California commercial interests. I had to make do with just blueberry.
Its a better world now; I can have both Blueberry and Mango yogurt in cheap Albertsons Brands on sale.
But my favorite yogurts are the Trader Joe's Mango and the Brown Cow's maple and blueberry.

I'm in the Yoplait camp, too. The portions are just right, and I don't find it too sweet. I'm fairly purist with my flavors - I tend to run between the light and the regular because I like the various citrus flavors best along with occasionally cherry, mango, peach or berry flavor for variety.
I'll have to try Trader Joe's yogurt. I bought their French Vanilla ice cream today when I needed a quick dessert for an unexpected guest, and was blown away by how good it was.

I got this mango and ginger yogurt - I can't remember the brand name off the top of my head, alas. It was a Greek-style yogurt, I believe? See, I went to this place called the Fresh Market last week. [
Here's the link; if you happen to have one in your area, definitely stop by and check it out! It's a beautiful store and the service is impeccable.]
Anyway, I bought several different brands and flavors of yogurt that I hadn't seen anywhere else - swiss yogurt, greek yogurts, etc etc. There were all kinds of unusual flavors. Anyway, I tried the ginger and mango yogurt and really enjoyed it! I also tried a yogurt that was honey and vanilla bean flavored - also very good. The one greek yogurt whose name I actually remember is Chobani. I tried their plain ol' vanilla. It was very smooth, and not very sweet...
For those who might like a yogurt with less sweetness - it seems the greek yogurt isn't nearly as sweet as some of those yogurts with fruit on the bottom. Also, every greek yogurt I got was non-fat. I'm not sure if all greek yogurt is non-fat, maybe it is? Hmmm...
I'll keep you posted on what the other yogurts are like!

(and will keep better track of the brand names)

Is "greek" yogurt a brand name or a particular style of yogurt? There's a new Fresh Market in LR and I was planning on going to town tomorrow, so I'm going to check it out. I went with a friend last month and the place has a lot of specialty items - great cheeses and a lot of organic stuff. I'll come back with a yogurt report.

It's a particular style. The consistency is different, and it's not as sweet. I don't eat it on its own, but it's good in dishes that call for yogurt or to use as a mayonnaise substitute because it doesn't add much sugar to the dish.

Thanks, Summer-Fun. It's thicker,yes?
I happened to be in town today and I went by the Fresh Market that Philippa mentioned the other day. I picked 4 kinds of yogurt to try.
Chobani brand peach greek yogurt fatfree 140 calories for 6 ounces not organic but "all natural"
Wallaby brand organic raspberry "creamy australian style" lowfat 140 calories for 6 ounces
Siggi's brand "Icelandic style skyr yogurt" in orange and ginger flavor ('bout the most adventuresome I've ever been with yogurt) Skyr, the carton tells me, is the name for thick yogurt in Icelandic. (Greek-like, maybe?) Fatfree 120 calories for 6 ounces
your basic American brand from Londonderry NH in the red, white and blue carton: Stonyfield Farm Organic smooth and creamy Pomegranate Berry Fatfree 130 calories for 6 ounces
Looking at the cartons, they are made in NY, CA. NY, and NH. I love this country - we can pretend to be anything.
I'll also point out that they cost 2-3 times what my cheapo wal-mart yogurt costs. But, it will be an interesting experiment to try new things. I'll let you guys know if one of them wows me.

Good grief! A veritable United Nations of yogurt. You'll have to report your findings! Greek yogurt (real Greek, anyway) is thicker, yes. That and the lack of super-sweetness is why it subs nicely for sour cream or mayonnaise (although in the Bible according to SF, NOTHING subs for mayo, but that's another discussion.)

Man, I missed the lead-up to the trek to Fresh Market somehow the other day, LillyHobbs!! Thank goodness you and Summer_Fun bumped the thread! Fresh Market has fantastic cheeses. When I was there I picked up three really good ones - Cathedral de Meaux brie (very very creamy, quite heavenly); cranberry chipotle cheddar (can't remember the brand off the top of my head); and port salut (like a really, really creamy havarti that's basically spreadable, it's so creamy). The cheese section at Fresh Market rocks.
Getting back to yogurt...
I got a couple of the Siggi's brand "Icelandic style skyr yogurts" as well, LillyHobbs. Yes, you and I shall become afficionados of Icelandic style yogurt. Um, from NYC, ha ha. I got the blueberry and the pomegranate and passion fruit. I think I'll try the blueberry for breakfast and will report back on my findings.
I wish I hadn't thrown out the container for the honey and vanilla bean Green style yogurt - I think it was something like, Krovos? Kronos? But it wasn't either of those. *rolls eyes* It started with a "K" and was uh, a Greek word. LOL! Wow. I used to love it when people would come up to the reference desk at the library and say, "I'm looking for a book that's green, about art history? It's yay big - can you help me find it?" I'm starting to sound like this, aren't I. ay-yi-yi! *laughs* Anyway, Summer_Fun gave a most excellent description: the greek yogurt (I've tried two of these, the "K something something" yogurt and the Chobani) is smoother and not as sweet. I liked it pretty well!
I also picked up an Emmi Swiss premium pink grapefruit yogurt. I love grapefruit so I have high hopes for this one. *fingers crossed*
One last note about Fresh Market - siggy26 has turned me on to THE BEST gummi bears (excuse me, pandas) that I've ever had in my life. They are Bissinger's white tea and pomegranate gummi pandas. They're completely organic. Of course, they're still candy, ha ha. But they're really fabulous. I just looked them up on the internet and they have these in pink grapefruit flavor! Be still my beating heart! At my Fresh Market they only had the white tea/pomegranate and the blueberry acai...

YES!!!! YES!!!!! Oikos, that was it!!!!! Starts with a "K"...or maybe an "O" - I'm sounding more and more like those library patrons from ye olden days with each passing hour.

Yes, that was it, I'm positive it was Oikos. It was very, very good (honey and vanilla bean flavor). I don't have a Trader Joe's near me, but I really love that grocery. One of the things I liked about the Trader Joe's near where I used to live, is that it was a manageable size. I can get easily overwhelmed in a store like Wegmans, which is truly wondrous but it's enormous. Trader Joe's is great. They have these lemon sorbets that I used to love to get - lemon sorbet scooped into fresh lemon rinds and then frozen. Love these!!!
The Fresh Market just recently opened up near where I live. I hadn't been in one since I left South Carolina 20 years ago, and going back in there the other day...it was exactly as I'd remembered it - classical music playing over the loudspeakers, beautiful and artfully arranged fresh flowers and produce; bins of specialty candies, an extraordinarily helpful and courteous staff steeped in southern hospitality. It was the best shopping experience I've had in a long time. If I could shop for groceries every day at Fresh Market, I'd enjoy it a heck of a lot more, methinks - alas, it's a trek all across town for me to get there, sigh.
That cranberry chipotle cheese was amazing. If you're a cheese lover, you've got to try to find this somewhere. Sec, lemme see if I can find the brand in a quick google search.
'kay, it's made by Carr Valley Cheese, a cheesemaker from Wisconsin. I don't see any info on their website other than
how to order it online, interestingly enough. I wish they had a bit of background on it! I also tried their apple smoked cheddar, which was excellent as well. The woman at the Fresh Market cheese shop told me that she likes to use the cranberry chipotle cheddar in her omelets (I can't stand eggs, so I won't be trying this out myself, but I can see how it would make for a great combination of flavors in an omelet). Hope you can find the Carr Valley Cheese Co. somewhere out in your neck of the woods!

This is the most indepth conversation about yogurt, I've ever seen

I'm not hardcore like Phillippa. If I even tried to make my own yogurt, I don't know what the outcome would even be. I love yogurt and I eat it quite frequently. I buy Yoplait Light. I stick with Vanilla, Strawberry, and Blueberry. I know, I'm plain like that, but those are the ones I eat the most of. Just a brief report on the Chobani greek style peach yogurt from Fresh Market.
Yum!
It is thicker than the Yoplait Light straight from the carton. I found that I like this thicker style. It was sweet but not too sweet. I usually eat "no sugar added" (aspartane laden) yogurt so part of the reason I liked it may be the 19 gram of carbohydrates. Sugar was second on the ingredient list. When they thicken it up, it may increase the protein content (14 grams) so that may contribute to the mmmm factor. It had peach flavor ("natural") in the yogurt and little bits of peach in the bottom which weren't grody at all.
I recommend it, if you don't mind the sugar.
Had it for breakfast with a hunk of the rosemary and sea salt bread I also bought there. Will have the imported french goat cheese for lunch - I can't wait.

more yogurt reviews coming in!

This afternoon I tried Siggi's icelandic style skyr strained non-fat yogurt in blueberry. 1 container of yogurt contains 120 calories and 13g carbohydrates and get this - 16g of protein. WOW!!! Now *that* is a high-powered yogurt!
This is one of the thickest yogurts I've ever had in my life - it's very dense, very creamy. I can't believe that this yogurt only has 120 calories and is non-fat - that's how creamy and rich it is.
It isn't at all sweet. And although I am a person who prefers yogurt to be not all that sweet, I have to say that even I would've liked to have had just a touch more sweetness. I think adding just a pinch of honey would elevate this to being among the best store-bought yogurts I've ever had.
This yogurt would be hard to beat in terms of its high protein content. low carb count, and non-fat status, I should think...
Will try the pomagranate and passion fruit flavor this weekend and let you know what I think! Tomorrow morning it's the Swiss-style yogurt.

Mango&Ginger sounds really good, but I clicked on your link, and alas it looks like these stores are only on the East Coast, not in California. Philippa your attention to detail on the yogurt report is impressive. I shall now seek out local sources for these brave new yogurts that I have never heard of before. In fact after reading the recent posts to this thread, I think I will offer a variety of yogurts for tasting at my Burn Notice season Premier party next week.

Hey there!
I just have a quick minute - btu I wanted to stop by and say I looked to see if you have a Fresh Market in Orlando and you do, yay! That's where I got the siggi yogurt. According to the Fresh Market website the store is located at 5000 Dr. Phillips Boulevard. Hope you can find it there (if not, I'm sure they have just as many flavors at your Fresh Market as they do at mine).

I, too, really liked the Siggi's icelandic style skyr non-fat yogurt. I chose orange and ginger, which is way outside my comfort zone as far as yogurt flavors. It was delicious. It is very, very thick, even thicker than the Chobani greek-style yogurt. I have discovered that I like that in a yogurt. The spoon stands up in the carton. It is tart. I added a tad-bit of sweetener to mine.
It's really the thick texture that I like, but the flavor was very good, too. Had little bits of ?candied gingered orange in it. Whatever it was, it was good.
I know what brand I'll be choosing next time. I can't wait to sample all the flavors.
SCF : great idea about adding a yogurt-tasting component to a BN party. I hope I can do that some time this half-season.
