The actor Kal Penn wanted to leave the show to go work in the White House, so they had to get him off the show and i guess suicide was the best way they could think of. That episode made me cry , especially at the end when they showed the funeral.
I just came to this site...after meaning to for quite a while. Besides the shocking plot twist of Kutner's suicide, "House" has many inexplicable (to me anyway--like the wholel Cuddy thing-ugh!) subplots and twists. But as for a character committing suicide: yes it's shocking when there's no warning--even more shocking than Amber's death in some ways. But perhaps someone on the cast or crew knew someone who had committed suicide...and that is always shocking. Rarely does anyone feel that "they saw it coming"!
It happened to the brother of one of my high school classmates and even he didn't see "the writing on the wall", though there was plenty of it (pages marked philosophy books and novels, etc.). As he said years later, about his father's death: "It's always sudden", which was how I felt about my own dad's drawn-out death via brain tumor; you're never ready for it.
Maybe that's what the creators of a show this intelligent were trying to shoot for. If so, they hit it spot on.
Sooo...what's Kal doing NOW?
