The title intrigues me...
A couple of possibilities:
1. Nichols's dad, a shrink, gets introduced
2. Wheeler's pregnancy gets announced on the show
Thoughts?

Interesting, both ideas. I was surprised that nothing was mentioned about her pregnancy in the first episode. If she is going to give birth by the end of the season, I figured they would introduce the subject as soon as possible so that we understand her blossoming figure.

Yeah, I was kind of wondering why Ross didn't bring it up (since he seems to drop a lot of character bombshells) when he was talking about her fiancee and his upcoming trial. Will we see the trial, I wonder?

That would be like Criminal Intent, to have us guess why Julianne suddenly went from flat stomached to PREGNANT.
An imaginary line of dialogue:
Wheeler (motions to her stomach):"Oh, this? I just got knocked up to nine months overnight. No big deal."

I'm excited about the episode plot. High finance means a good, major case and sordid plotlines!

Some of the best LOCI epis have revolved around high finance and sordid plotlines, no matter who the lead detectives have been. I think the writers have just a little too much fun sometimes.

Sorry, the software wasn't cooperating (or I pushed the wrong buttons), so I had to type-out the above quotes.
We don't have to wait until NEXT Season for a repeat of "In The Wee Small Hours (Season 5)." USAs posted schedule shows both episodes to be Aired twice on Thursday, May 14 (this week).
For newcomers, this is the two-part Episode that features Goren, Eames, Logan and Barek (all 4). Since it is very infrequently aired on any network and Season 5 has not yet become available on DVDs, you may want to set your VCR, DVR, Tivo, or other device to record it.
As for a 4-Detective Episode (Goren, Eames, Wheeler, and Nichols), it's not in the cards for Season 8; all the scripts were written long ago and only one or two haven't been shot by now. I also think, the combination of Actors Contract negotiations (all season), physical restraints due to Julianne Nicholson's pregnancy (current and/or potential), and the introduction of and development of a new character (unfamiliar to L&O audiences, writers, etc) was a little too much to try to combine two casts/scripts this year.
In the wake of the Writers Strike, the studios have lost a lot of money and the economy, in general, may also prohibit a 4-detective episode(s); because I don't think the producers will want to pay 4 "star" salaries, instead of the normal 2 at this time (and the doubled residuals each time the episode(s) is replayed.
I do think, however, in one Season 8 Goren and Eames Episode, Zach Nichols (Jeff Goldblum) will appear, if only to be introduced to the other team of detectives in the Squad Room. This will probably occur in "Faithfully" as it, apparently was the first Season 8 Episode shot; even it wasn't shown as a Season Premiere. This "walk-on" would be consistent with "real world" practices and with the introduction of Mike Logan when he appeared in Season 4 (Sorry, I can't come up with the episode name at the moment).

Sorry, my laptop wasn't cooperating. This episode is wonderful. Goldblum is fantastic. Authority issues and Ross's comment: tell me about it. I had to laugh. Great episode! But whoever is running CI now needs to put the writer on the G/E episodes immediately.
Guess what, guys. We won't abandon Goren for Nichols completely even if you do give G/E crap episodes and shoot VDO with quaaludes. All it will do is drive us to depression and apathy. Do you want that, an apathetic audience?
I want good episodes for both teams again, not simply Nichols.

This is what Criminal Intent should be like every week:
-Really funny opening where two male detectives desperately try to figure out if a female colleague is pregnant
-Crime with sordid financial/affair details
- "Father" issues for both our lead detectives
-Captain Ross offering to change diapers
-Therapy sessions
- Mid episode suicides

I think this episode was VERY GOOD. I loved the stares wondering if Wheeler was pregnant... Nichols bringing her water, Ross offering to change diapers... etc.
Also, the way the episode was done overall -- I mean, like the early years, MANY points of view so we could see the whole picture of what was going on... I wasn't confused at all. I knew the doctor had to be part of it... But it's the way he was caught... The whole going back and forth thing with Nichols & the doctor...
GREAT episode overall!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was one of the best episodes ever in the show's history. I was hooked from the beginning. No long, drawn out beginning. To the point. Very well written. It was all about JG and JN.
Goldbloom was wonderful. Wheeler had more lines of dialogue than Eames ever has had. The writers gave more personal information about Wheeler and Nichols backstories than they ever have about Goren/Eames.
I did notice that some of the same sets were used as with Goren/Eames episodes. The high-rise office (one where Eames set up the blind date for Bobby (Bigfoot)). Street where Bobby's shrink is. Bobby and Alex have walked along that brick wall before in several episode.
Excellent all-around.

I love the writing, the dialogue, the personal stuff, the crime...I guessed who it was (and won't say who for those who are still watching it), but couldn't figure out WHY. Enter Detective Nichols and his background that was exactly what was needed to crack this case! Excellent.

I loved how Nichols was hanging over Ross's shoulder just going: you KNOW you want to ask her.
I also agree that the chemistry between Nichols and Wheeler was much better this week, though Wheeler still seems a bit unsure of him (i.e. the scene where she's talking to Rodgers). But, I guess when it comes to newer partnerships, there some of the "what the hell is he doing" kind of dialogue to be expected.

It looks like the writers are going to give us the fun of watching them grow as partners. One of the things I liked about Rock Star was watching Wheeler's reactions to Nichols. But I don't want that to be the sum total of their partnership; just her reacting to his quirky brilliance. That would get boring quickly. So I was very happy last night to see them actually working together, discussing the case, tossing ideas back and forth. There was still a bit of Wheeler reacting to Nichols' strangeness, such as the scene with Rodgers (BTW, it hadn't occurred to me that she would have known him "way back when"!), and when she was complaining to Ross that Nichols was focusing on the psychiatrist because of his "daddy issues". At first when he walked into the therapy session at the end I thought, "Oh shoot! Another aria where Wheeler doesn't know what's going on." But then she came in with the wife and I realized she was in on it with him, although he did most (or all? I have to watch it again) the talking. So I think this was not only a fun episode, it moved us along a bit in the growing team work of Nichols and Wheeler.
I thought the scene in the street when he finally asked her if she was pregnant was very sweet. I think I'm going to like watching Wheeler being pregnant and Ross and Nichols reacting to it. I loved watching Eames when she was pregnant and the way she sometimes used it to her advantage when trying to get information from someone (But Not Forgotten comes to mind).
