"I wonder who they are teaming people up with Going by this I think Henry may be with Juliet as they have had the least scene time together and the fact that Corbin mentions at comic con about Henry being involved with a case in the 3rd episode and that would put Gus with Lassiter may be? As you never see Gus really with Carlton without Shawn"

Actually here's what I'm hoping for as far as team-ups: Juliet pursuing leads with Gus while Lassiter and Henry work it on their end. I would LOVE to see Henry and Lassiter work together. I think they would kick total ass.

These spoilers have me even more excited about this episode.

I now keep wondering who the "big" brother is going to be. It would be cool if it is Bruce Campbell. biggrin.gif Sam Axe LOL! That would be quite lovely.

Okay...and if they do a musical, will someone please do a Top Secret version? Make sure you parade the booty cow around too (cow with little booties on his hooves). smile.gif I just want to hear Shawn sing "How Silly Can you Get" and Gus sing "Shop at Macy's". biggrin.gif

in the panel, corbin was asked if henry would be on a case and they said that episode 3 he is and that the clip they showed (that we cant watch) was of henry and lassie. so that definitly seems like the pairing. i wonder where the chief will come in! hmmm..

I'm really excited for Henry and Lassiter working together. It'll be wonderful!

i'm guessing that means that Jules and Gus will be together(when they are looking for Shawn). I thought they would because they are Shawn's actual friends who would probably go about finding Shawn differently than the others

Psych – Episode 4.01 - Extradition: British Columbia - Review

Labels: Psych

Is there any better way to spend a Friday night then watching TV? USA network certainly hopes not.

The boys (and girls) of Psych are back, but not in sunny California. As the title so subtly implies, Santa Barbara’s finest are living it up in Canada – some with spiffy new haircuts.

While you were off enjoying your vacations, Shawn and Gus decided to take a summer break of their own to the only logical place: Whistler Ski Resort. After one whole lesson, the pair hit the slopes, only to stumble upon an international art thief Shawn recognized from Lassiter’s “Most Wanted” wall.

Pierre Despereaux, played by Cary Elwes (most famously Westley in The Princess Bride), and the guys embark on a high-speed ski chase, where they make good use of the “pizza” technique. Pierre escapes, and the duo have to turn to local police for help.

As Shawn and Gus engage in some very bromantic activities, Lassiter and Juliet are sent up to assist in the investigation.

While substantially more light-hearted than last season's finale, season four's opener does touch on some serious elements, notably the Shawn and Juliet romantic subplot.

Hopefully, your breath is already bated in anticipation. If you desperately need a way to pass the time, I recommend brushing up on your 80’s pop culture. It will help.

Make sure you’re free on August 7th at 10:00 PM, and get ready to laugh as Psych returns for its fourth season.

Whoohooo! It's almost here!!! smile.gif Now that I think of it. Cary Elwes is from the movie "Saw" right? So I bet Dude had a great time talking to him about that experience as well as Princess Bride (and his other films). biggrin.gif

*Gulp* Yeah, given what we already know about this season, I'm kind of really scared about the b-story being shules. Ugh, Shabby...

Maybe this means that Jules will pull what he does in "Bank" and tell him to go for it with Abby like Shawn did with Luntz.

Yes...thank you USA Network! Those interviews were great! I love hearing from the producers and creator of the sweet sweet nectar that is Psych. biggrin.gif Now just splash some more dark dark chocolate on top and we'll be all good. Oh that's right..that's episode 3. wink.gif

but its so cute! tongue.gif

also, reminder to look for a cool camera shot at the end of the 1st episode when shawn and jules are on the bridge.

and the "favorite episode of season 4" is definitly a question i asked somewhere but idk if i asked the producers or just james and Dulé.

and the whole thing about shawn not knowing how to have a long term relationship makes me wonder if he'll be asking gus for help with relationships! i would LOVE to see that. especially cuz shawn always thinks gus can't get a girl. hehehe

He's nothing special. I'm a wrestling fan, so I have to put up with his crappyness every week. But it's worth it to see good matches! It's going to suck having to see him on my absolute favorite show, but I trust the Psych execs.

Isn't Juliet's brother appearing in the military episode? Didn't they also say that Robert Patrick was going to be a guest star this season? If so, I was cruising through the TV listings the other night and came across a movie called "The Marine" starring John Cena and Robert Patrick (sorry - I kept cruising and can't comment on the movie or what it's about, etc.). If John Cena is indeed going to play Juliet's brother, I wonder if Cena and Patrick are going to reunite in the military episode? smile.gif

STORY LINE
Shawn and Gus investigate the death of LEONALD CALLAHAN, aka Diddle, a computer cryptologist who was the baritone in Gus's old college a capella group.

[TONY] Mid-late 30s. African-American, a patent attorney; in spite of the fact that Tony is an attorney, there's a certain quirky goofiness to him that surfaces easily but he is the straight one of the group. Tony went to college with Gus, and was part of a four-man a capella group, along with Joon and the late Leonard Callahan. But there was a quarrel over a woman, and Tony and Joon haven't spoken to Gus in years. When Leonard is murdered (and the police think it's just a bicycling accident), Tony is reunited onstage with Gus, and he and Joon ask Shawn to investigate Leonard's death. Tony doesn't know who he can trust. Having received a puzzling encrypted e-mail from Leonard, Tony soon finds himself the target of an assassination plot, and he and his buddy Joon are just foolish enough to tag along after Shawn and Gus, trying to "help" solve the murder...(2) GUEST STAR

[JOON] Mid-late 30s. African-American, an accountant; in spite of the fact that Joon is an accountant, there's a certain quirky goofiness to him that surfaces easily (he's the silliest in the group). Joon went to college with Gus, and was part of a four-man a capella group, along with Tony and the late Leonard Callahan. But there was a quarrel over a woman, and Tony and Joon haven't spoken to Gus in years. When Leonard is murdered (and the police think it's just a bicycling accident), Joon is reunited onstage with Gus, and he and Tony ask Shawn to investigate Leonard's death. [MAN WITH THE SCAR / DETECTIVE MOSES JOHNSON] Mid 40s-mid 50s. African-American. An emotionless mourner at the funeral of Leonard Callahan, he's a suspicious looking man with a scar on his left cheek, and he becomes a prime suspect in Leonard's murder when Shawn and Gus see him taking part in a major drug buy...GUEST STAR

[CHELSEA] 20s-early 30s. African-American. An attractive office assistant at Cybervault, Chelsea is first seen as a sobbing mourner at the funeral of her co-worker, Leonard Callahan. Later, when questioned by Gus, Chelsea flirts with him and manages easily to extract his phone number. 1 speech & 7 lines, 4 scenes (5) GUEST STAR

[CORONER] Male. The Santa Barbara Coroner, he initially appears to be a serious-minded Medical Examiner -- but in fact, he's got a fun, wacky (Bill Murray-ish) side to him that comes out when he questioned by Shawn and Gus. We are looking for character types who are good with comedy...1 speech & 8 lines, 1 scene sptv050769 (14) POSSIBLE RECURRING ROLE

Desperately Seeking Despereaux (Psych Ep. 4.01 – ‘Extradition: British Columbia’)
Posted by midge at Thursday, July 30, 2009 (View Comments)
Labels: Psych, Recaps
The whole gang is back and up to their usual antics, albeit on foreign soil, as they chase an art thief and manage to avoid cliché jokes about Canada in the fourth season opener. It begins with our familiar flashback to a perfectly cast young Shawn claiming his lack of artwork at his school's open house was not the result of his errant behavior but, in fact, he and his art were the victims of a perfect crime. Well, apparently there's no such thing.

Our current tale begins rather precipitously. I found myself wishing I had watched last season's finale before this because I felt so abruptly tossed into the chief's office and even more abruptly tossed up to Canada, the setting for this particular adventure. Maybe I just like to ease into things a little, but as I found myself trying to recall where we last left our intrepid heroes, suddenly they are bundled up in ski gear amongst our neighbors to the north. Shawn is taking himself and Gus on a holiday, courtesy of Gus' credit card, when he spots someone he recognizes but can't quite place. A series of flashbacks to the aforementioned season finale make the connection and reveal the man to be an art thief, who is perfectly named Pierre Despereaux. I appreciated the reminder provided by these flashbacks. I did not appreciate that I couldn't decipher half of them because of the needlessly fast editing. Still, it did remind me that Ally Sheedy was in last season's finale and what could be more awesome than the basket case of ‘The Breakfast Club’? Wait, I know - The Dread Pirate Roberts! Despite its rocky start, the episode won me over as soon as our foe revealed himself to be the great Cary Elwes.

Despereaux (no relation to the mouse) is a renowned yet elusive art thief who has been slipping through Lassiter's fingers for years. Lassie is reliably not amused by Shawn’s antics but intrigued by the mention of the thief and eager to follow Shawn’s lead, although preferably without his interference. So, with Lassie and O’Hara in Vancouver and Shawn having ingratiated himself with the local Mounties or police or whatever they are called, the chase is on.

Hill and Roday still have that magic chemistry, which is highlighted by their vacation activities with seemingly intentional self-awareness. Sometimes the jokes on this show are a little predictable or almost corny but these characters’ charisma makes a would-be stale joke winsome. Speaking of self-aware, the biting and hilarious reference to ‘The Mentalist’s, shall we say, familiar premise was a favorite moment for me. No show does a perfectly placed and acerbically funny cultural reference quite as well as ‘Psych’. Well, maybe ‘Gossip Girl’ but that's a compliment in my book. The bffs deftly banter and bicker their way through the episode with Gus displaying his usual skeptical, overly self important dorkiness, in addition to some C. Z-Jones style laser ballet, and Shawn just slightly off his game in more than one department. In addition to their typically opposing views on how best to approach the case they also deal with some tension in their relationship due to Shawn’s budding romance with his high school crush, Abigail. This is the moment when I vaguely remembered him going out with that girl (remember her, she used to be homely until Freddie Prinze Jr. realized she was pretty?) at the end of last season. Again, seriously, watch the season finale again before this episode.

Speaking of tension in relationships, I did not forget Juliette’s poorly timed revelation of reciprocated feelings in the season 3 closer. This discomfort is played out nicely, in the same surprisingly subtle and sweet way that the show handles its main pairing. Or potential pairing. 'Ship I believe? Although I try to stay away from the squeeing and the Shuliette-ing (does that combo name exist? I think maybe it should), I can't help but really root for these two. This is due in part to the fact that both characters are strong as individuals and thus more believable and desirable as a couple. Juliette isn’t just a prop that serves as “female for main character to be interested in” and the writers don't think they just need to make her hot and that is enough to make her an obviously suitable recipient of Shawn’s affections. O’Hara matches Shawn’s wit and verve. The character is one of the most convincing and endearing lady detectives on television today. Some variation of this character type is portrayed on a lot of TV shows and it usually rings false. Maggie Lawson continues to shine in her role and plays this new depth to their relationship very well. While Roday always seems in his element as the hyperbolic showman, he continues to deliver these quieter moments with the delicate awkwardness and reflective confliction that they deserve.

Shawn connection with his “psychic” detecting skills seems to be a bit off as well or at least he is well matched by his adversary. Cary Elwes does not disappoint. He plays a slightly more British, slightly more devious version of “The Man in Black”. He definitely plays it on the sinister side – none of this "As you wish" nonsense. Pierre Despereaux has beaten your giant, bested your Spaniard and clearly not chosen the wine in front of you. He is the perfect art thief, one part dashing sophisticate, two parts mischievous scoundrel and a pinch of obnoxious prig- forever taunting his would be captors and then vanishing into thin air. The theatrical element to ‘Psych’ really compliments the plot of "tracking international art thief and general rouge who is always one step ahead" with its playing up the caper element and elaborately crafting Elwes as debonair purloiner extraordinaire. A frustrated Shawn and Gus, accompanied by a hilarious Kenneth the Page-esque Canadian deputy, a disgruntledly unarmed Lassiter and a perpetually cute O’Hara, spend most of the episode a few steps behind. But only a few steps. Shawn slowly begins to hone in on his adversary because, as he says himself, he "is a honer".

In terms of engaging and quick-witted humor, this episode delivered what we've come to expect from ‘Psych’. I maintain that the throwaway comments, most often between Shawn and Gus, are where you find the real comedy gold, and this episode was no exception. The episode also had something else that makes ‘Psych’ special, and that was a clever plot with a twist that I did not see coming. Although any given episode may have the occasional hokey exchange, the show consistently delivers creative stories and novel mysteries with unexpected resolutions. This caper was a complicated tale and they took the time to tell it properly so that the twists really packed a punch. They also delivered on the humor, my favorite scene being Shawn’s conversation with the raccoons (about which he seems to share my same irrational fear), and managed to touch on some of the more intimate relationship developments without it being distracting. I am glad they didn't rush the development of the cat (burglar) and mouse story and I feel that perhaps, not wanting to shortchange the unfolding of the case, they set up a complex premise in a very short amount of time and thus sacrificed a proper build up. I forgive the shaky start though because once the episode got going it turned out to have one of the better crafted and more engaging plots on a show that excels at well crafted stories that engage the viewer. My final verdict? This show continues to consistently deliver - it’s a great start to what promises to be another fun season. Still hate the theme song though.
