Ok so I watched the awesome season 3 finale and noticed there wasn't a flash back to shawn's childhood! And I listened to the episode commentary and could've sworn I heard one of the producers say that there aren't going to be flash backs in season 4! Is this true? I will miss it very much, I mean I guess it had to go eventually but still. So I just wanted to know if anyone else heard this or if I heard correctly?
Oh and I also wanted your guys opinion on the whole Shawn using Gus to goof off, I didn't like it, I'm sorry to say it but Gus just isn't able to goof like Shawn. I mean I thought it was a good one time thing but I just hope it wont become a trend.

Which episode commentary? Was it the podcast for 'An Evening with Mr. Yang'? On that commentary it was mentioned that none of the S3 episodes that Andy Berman wrote(3) contained flashbacks. Andy said that it would be discussed in depth on the next podcast.

My guess: Andy is originally from Vulgaria. He didn't make the cut for Child Catcher so he emigrated and began working in show business. He is, of course, deathly afraid of children and refuses to work with them. Which is weird because working in Hollywood surely stunts one's emotional growth, rendering all the denizens childlike. Ironic. wink.gif

Also on that podcast they broached the subject of Gus' antics in the finale. It was explained that Gus had to act that way to help Shawn on this case. He had to kind of be Shawn. Saying inappropriate stuff, non-stop chatter. Shawn can't work without that and he had to concentrate to save his mom. They wanted to inject some humor into that episode so that is was still Psych-like. They made a point of saying that the finale did not signal a change in the tone of the show; it's not going to be a drama now or anything, so not to worry.

I agree about the Shawn and Gus thing- Shawn needs that kind of banter in order to work. He told Gus that much right after the burrito thing- "If he gets into my head, we lose." No one was trying to turn Gus into Shawn, Gus was just doing what Shawn asked of him.

About the flashbacks, dunno. I'd miss little Liam though! He's so cute! It doesn't hurt that my son is also named Liam :-)

ok so my guess it they will still have flashbacks. Some episodes don't have them and the flashbacks relate to the episode and i don't know how you could do a flashback for that episode. I could be wrong though

I certainly hope they won't stop having flashbacks. But if they do, do you think it's because the actor who plays Young Shawn is getting too old?

Even if the actor is getting to old they could just use a different time frame of his life, or get a different actor and go into his teenagehood.
They have to keep the flashbacks, all I heard was that the few episodes that Andy Berman didnt have flashbacks, mainly because they couldnt make one fit with the story.

Why would Andy be afraid of children or work with them? He was afterall Chuck from the Wonder Years! Second, in the commentaries Andy's scripts are longer than any writer on the staff and they have to cut stuff out. So, all three of Andy's scripts this season had no flashbacks. If you listen to the pilot commentary, they never tended to have flashbacks! It was later that they thought it was a good aspect for their pilot and then corporated them into the episodes.

But I wouldn't want them to get rid of the flashbacks. In fact, I would like to have an entire episode in flashback with young Shawn (Liam) and young Gus (Carlos) getting involved in one of Henry's (Corbin) cases! That would be awesome!

They also mention that, once the flashbacks were in, for the first season and kinda the second they generally had to be included as part of the "formula" of the TV show. That is to say, when a show first comes out, they are told to basically keep the same formula of plot line over and over until the audience is comfortable with the show and they get a fan base... only then can they diverge from the formula.

From(I think) the Black and Tan commentary (where I think they said they wanted to not do the flashback, but were told they needed to), it is not that they want to do away with the flashbacks altogether, its that they don't want to include them when they aren't called for or needed.

Just my two cents.

But that character came into the show towards the end of its run. They were postpubescent, really, young adults by the time Chuck made his first appearance. Like most from his former country, Andy is more uncomfortable around the ankle-biter set. I'm sure that as young Shawn and Gus age he will be able to incorporate flashbacks into his episodes. I just hope all the extra writing doesn't keep him from addressing his crippling flying car phobia and inexplicable aversion to English teas.

Yes, I totally agree! Gus was just doing what Shawn asked of him. True friendship. Gus did his best to make a tough situation for Shawn even bearable. Gus knew Shawn was upset when "Yang" was in their office; watching them the whole time so he did the King Kong bit. LOL!

they may have had flashbacks but they had to seperate scenes with pictures of young shawn once at the psych office and at the hotel room when shawn realized yang had his mom
