Few things,
I said pretty much this exact thing in a different thread topic, but I want to see what people think of it.
Also, I want to make clear that Psych is amazing and my favorite show. Now...
I used to love Monk and it was my favorite show. However, I'm sorry to Monk lovers, but it's really lost its thunder. I think it is very predictable and repetitive, and I feel that nearly every episode either Monk, Natalie, Monk and Natalie, are always in danger. The plots are still good, but I can't stand how they always end up in danger. Notice that every single part 2 season 3 episode of Psych, they were always in danger? Whether it was being held at gunpoint after being trapped in a boat, getting captured with Lassie by a detective, in a burning building, being held at gunpoint by a football team, running from assassins with a hospital patient and liar, trapped at a camp with a murderer, or being targeted by a serial killer, there was always danger to Shawn/Gus (I give exception to the last 2 cause they were amazing and worth it). I don't want Psych to take on that part of Monk. I want to see them break away from the constant danger that Monk gets into. It started like this in Monk but to me, and how it was interesting adding some danger, however, it gets REALLY old. I really hope Psych doesn't become this. I wanna see Psych look a little more like part 2 of season 2- in terms of the no danger- just strict solving and such. I think that it is still hilarious and amazing, and won't impact the show greatly, but I don't want to see it become as repetitive as Monk. Those are my thoughts. Sorry to Monk fans if it was mean, but I still really like Monk and watch it, but it has gotten a tad annoying with the danger. Don't become Monk, Psych.
Thanks, and please respond.

I agree with you on the Monk front. The ennui you feel may just be a product of the length of time the show has been on the air. I also believe that this year may have been difficult on the cast and crew as a result of the death of Stanley Kamel, who played Dr. Kroger. His character was integral to the healing of Monk and without him the show seems to have drifted.
In regards to this season on Psych, I think they did a tremendous job. Yes, they had more drama, more danger, etc. But that was the producers' stated purpose for Season 3. Any creative effort must keep moving forward. To be static is to die. They key is to inject new life into the show without changing the characters or premise substantially. Those changes may have turned some people off but, if they rolled with it, they were rewarded with some excellent episodes.
They've proven that they know better than the fans (given that, you know, they make a living doing it) how to keep the story moving along with enough change to keep surprising us. I'm sure Season 4 will be awesome as well.
With Monk, going in, you knew that the series would end with Monk solving Trudy's murder. With Psych, there is a universe of possible denouements for Shawn. That is why we keep watching. I don't think either the producers or writers of Psych envision an 8 year run. I'm guessing closer to 5 years.
I don't know about y'all, but with the tumult in the world right now, this is the one show that I can watch to completely escape. Reality shows make me nervous or feel bad for the contestants, I haven't the time for shows like Desperate Housewives that have a continuing storyline and medical dramas or procedurals are often very dark. So any way the producers and writers take Psych; I'm on board. They haven't let us down yet.

I agree, and they have done a fabulous job moving the more dramatic story lines forward without losing the 'fun' side of the show that we all love.

I'm not trying to harsh your mellow, but Steve Franks contract only has him through the next 2 seasons and James Roday said in his interview in Hispanic magazine that he doesn't see it as a 10 year process.

On the future of Psych:
“Psych, based on its premise, is not the kind of show that I think can run for 10 years. There is going to come a point to where it’s not cool to watch a guy in his mid to late 30s running around like Peter Pan. I feel like we have a finite window to deliver the absolute best product we can. We can’t stop and we can’t rest and we can’t let our foot off the gas until it’s over.”
I think his character is 32 now. That doesn't bode well for 'Gunsmoke'-like longevity. Cheer up! Think of it like 'The Dick Van Dyke Show'. Only ran 5 years but almost all the episodes are classic.

Yeah...I know. * sighs dramatically *
It's just hard to think about that since this is literally the only show I watch on tv, with little hopes of other current programing drawing my attention....Here's to dvds!

When Psych is finished, all of these talented people will go on to other projects. I'm sure some will be in television. Perhaps lightening will strike twice.
DVD's
are a god-send.

Yea, I still think that if the viewers are there, a 6 or 7 season project isn't too much out of the question.
Also, I completely agree that this past season was phenomenal. I like the danger, I'm just saying that I don't want it to happen every episode so it makes it repetitive like it has with Monk.

all this talk about Psych stopping is making me depressed
