Full Version: That Shawn and Jules Thing

Hello Guys!

I haven't been back in a while. But I have been watching the episodes regularly, and I generally love almost all the episodes of the latter half of the 3rd season. Shawn's quirkiness is back, and Gus is playing even more.

There's a lot to say about specific things and specific episodes, but I only just wrote in to say something about this Shawn and Jules thing.

We all know they'll eventually end up together. And right now they're just keeping it cool, laying it low and taking it slow because it might kill the show.

I don't necessarily agree with this.

The hints of a romance are *too* subtle and too under the radar that you don't get a sense of a deeper connection between the two at all. There's nothing there. Even when characters point it out, you don't believe it because we're never given any crumbs that could satisfyingly be considered a direction towards romance.

Even Juliet wanting to go out on a date in the season finale seemed out of place. It seemed like something completely out of the blue, and something they put in there just to remind us that there's supposed to be something there.

But the thing is, it's never hinted properly. In the episode "Earth, Wind and... Wait for It", look at the scene where the abandoned building blew up with Shawn inside. Juliet never showed any appropriate emotional response to the possibility that someone she had feelings for may well be dead. There's nothing there. It's a wasted opportunity to push the relationship forward.

In Chuck's episode last night where the normally cool and aloof CIA Agent Sarah Walker sees Chuck's car explode, she almost breaks down in tears, showing emotion that she has never shown before. It's a great moment, and it pushes Chuck and Sarah's relationship forward. With Juliet, there's nothing.

So when she comes up to Shawn in the the drive in, it doesn't ring true.

I don't know why the fans and the writers are so afraid to push this relationship forward. You're all scared that the show is going to jump the shark once they get together. You think they show is going to go downhill because the thrill is gone.

I put forward the notion that you all might be wrong.

Writers, if you intend to get these two together, ditch the subtlety. Just go for it. GO FOR IT.

Romance killed Mork and Mindy and Moonlighting because the show was about them. Mork and Mindy was *about* Mork and Mindy. Moonlighting was *about* David and Maddie.

PSYCH is about SHAWN and GUS. Not Shawn and Juliet. It's all about SHAWN and GUS and their friendship. Shawn can stand to have a girlfriend, and it won't hurt the show a bit if it just happened to be Juliet.

Knock off the pussyfooting around already and hook these guys up.

It will not affect Psych in any significant way, and many fans will be satisfied (although some of the romance haters won't be).

"Romance haters"? That's a little far...

Why is it that anytime someone disagrees with the majority opinion there's immediately something wrong with them? Ridiculous, much?

Yeah and in "Mr. Yang..." she responded to everything he said. She looked like she was going to comfort him when he found out Yang had his mom, she took a step toward him if I remember correctly, so she has emotion and big time feelings for him smile.gif

I lived through the Moonlighthing "get together" and a few other shows and it killed it. I'm not saying this is what will happen to Psych..but just recalling those other shows..it was just not pretty.

Psych has awesome writers, so they can do just about anything and it will still be smart/funny/hip. I personally dig all the messin' around and the "bad timing" stuff. Plus you can draw on more angst if need be in certain scenarios.

Then I wonder how Jules is going to feel when she finds out Shawn is not a real psychic. Will it totally tick her off that she's been played or will she realize he has a great mind for deductive reasoning? Inquiring minds want to know. Not yet though..not yet! biggrin.gif
Spinly
To be honest, I watch the show mainly for the interaction between Shawn and Gus, though I love Shawn and Henry's relationship as well. I am not anti romance, but it is not important to the show for me. I am just as happy with the Shawn, Jules friendship/flirting.

yea and even though shawn yelled at jules in the psych office in the Mr.Yang ep, she still opened her heart to him, so they really do care about eachother on more of a personal level. they WILL get together, just not too soon smile.gif

i agree but i don't want it to become like Scrubs when JD and Elliot were on/off 10x each season. i predict (psychic vibes coming in tongue.gif ) they will get together end of season 4

We just finished up the last half of season 3 tongue.gif

I really want them to get together by the end of the series, but I have completely mixed emotions on when I want them together. As much as I would like them together NOW, I also really do NOT want them together now. I like the flirting we get now, but sometimes it just feels like its not enough, you know? I hope they bump up the tension in season 4, and make their moments occur more frequently. Cause honestly I can never get too much of them. smile.gif But I have faith in the writers that they will do this, especially now that Shawn knows Juliet's true feelings for him. I mean, come on, you saw the boy's face when she kissed him! IMHO, him and Abigail aren't going to last that long in a romantic relationship with Juliet around. Also, Shawn and Abigail have a very easy relationship. While that may be what Shawn needs right now at this point in his life, as Jules put it, "The best things aren't supposed to come easily."

Though I do sort of hope that even if/when Abigail and Shawn part ways (romantically), she pops up every once in a while cause she's a pretty awesome character.

I share the same feelings. As much as I want them to be together right now, I think it's too soon. I hope they wait a little while, but still keep the tension and flirting going until then.

You know, I have to say, as much as I love Juliet, I do think Shawn and Abagail make a good couple. They DO have a much easier relationship. She really seems to "get" Shawn and his humor, whereas Juliet, at times, seems exasperated with Shawn. I think Shawn needs to mature a bit more before he can develop a serious relationship with Juliet.

I know what you mean, and I do kind of agree with you. But I think Juliet has been warming up to Shawn and laughing more at his jokes. Like you said, I think a relationship with Abigail with help him grow up and be ready for that more relationship with Juliet smile.gif

Comparing Shawn/Jules with Moonlighting's Maddie/David is like comparing hamburger to Filet Mignon. I've said it before and I'll say it again: No one did it better than Moonlighting, and everything else pales in comparison. (With the possible exception of Mulder/Scully, which was almost as good... but not quite.)

Personally, I find the Shawn/Jules romance boring. Boring. Boring. Every time it's mentioned or hinted at during the show I have to suppress a yawn. There is just no chemistry between the characters at all... possibly because the actors themselves date (or dated in the past... not sure if they're still together), thus any type of sexual tension between the real individuals is gone.

Shawn is best as a philanderer. It suits his immature, boyish nature. And his flirtatious interactions with random women are always funny and entertaining. But his interactions with Jules are just lame and, IMHO, discordant with his character.

does anyone really believe Shawn really copied Jules questions in the speed dating thing? I remember watching her face when he told her that.... she seemed kinda disappointed,lol... and the way she left " see ya at work" twice, lol.

i don't think that he did, when the lady told them that they were a 100% match, i think if he really did copy, he would have thought of something smart to said (like he usually does) and not just an ackward moment and an excuse

according to a recent interview at the beginning of february, james and maggie are still on.

but in my opinion, i think that from what i know about james and maggie and their relationship, and seeing them together on psych... it feels like they are holding back. which, obviously they have to because thats what they are told. but if anyone has seen fear itself, THAT is genuine. like the whole time i was like "awww" because everything seemed so honest and believable. then sometimes when you see their little moments on psych you're thinking to yourself... how can these be the same people? and i know thats the brilliancy of their acting... so yeah. i definitely get that whole "holding back thing" although. i feel like the sexual tension is still there. just that sometimes they have to hold it back for the sake of the show... because after all the show isnt about shules as much as some of us would want. it is most definitely about shawn and gus. . .

( idk what im saying i think i just talked in a circle. )

but i think that when Shawn and Juliet get together, whenever it is, it will be (to quote james ) organic.

and thats all that matters.

I don't see this as a bad thing. Those little moments that shine through are telling, because the characters, or at least Jules IS trying to hold back, whether because she is concerned about the appropriateness of the relationship or thinks it may be a "mistake"...well at least until "An Evening With Mr. Yang"

I think a fundamental thing to keep in mind is that Psych is back for a fourth season. We can't make yes or no judgements based on the characters/situations as they are now since they will inevitably change over the course of the next season. The best we can do is take what we do know and try to extrapolate it to the future. With that said...

I love Shawn and Juliet. Whoever says they don't have chemistry isn't looking hard enough, in my opinion. Their "relationship" is a whole aspect of the show in and of itself-- or at least a whole sub-story. I find their dialogue and interactions enjoyable and entertaining (and intriguing) and would love for them to get together. But, that's only because I've taken what I know of Shawn and Juliet and extrapolated it into a workable/possible future. In essence, I've tried to answer the question "are they/will they be compatible?"

Shawn has grown closer to Juliet's level over the past three seasons. At the beginning of season 1, he was at odds with his father, not talking to his mother, without a steady job and more than a little irresponsible. But, look at him now. He has a good relationship with his father AND mother, has friends of a sort (i.e. more than just Gus) at the police station and shows maturity in his commitments (not ditching Abigail for Juliet) even if it's hard for him... But despite all this, he's still the silly, charming, dynamic, fun Shawn we all love and adore. So, what about Juliet then?

Juliet was mature and responsible from the onset (or at least moreso than Shawn was) so she didn't really need character development in that area. I guess to some, this might make her seem incompatible with the less mature Shawn-- but I would argue he and she are more alike than one would think at first. Think of the Talk Derby to Me/Scary Sherry: Bianca's Toast episodes where Juliet had to go undercover. In both situations she got "really into" her undercover identity and, to be honest, acted quite ditzy/silly/dynamic herself. As one last example, think of the American Duos episode. I mean, seriously, who couldn't help but laugh at suit-wearing, policewoman Juliet O'Hara busting dance moves like that? And who can still assert that they're "SO" different? I think they have more in common than she lets on smile.gif

I think that with their respective character trends as a backdrop for analysis, they are definitely compatible-- or they at least will be after a little more growth and interaction with one another.

As for the Shawn/Abigail shippers... I see where you're coming from. But I don't like them together simply because they're too alike.

"How do you feel about popped corn?"
"I like it. I like it -very- much."

People say that's such a Shawn-ish thing to say. It is. But, the thing is, I don't want Shawn to be with someone who complements him perfectly. I think the relationship would get too bland and stale after a few episodes of them being perfectly complementary with one another huh.gif But, I do respect your take on the issue smile.gif

I agree with you completely, especially about how Shawn and Abigail are too alike. People shouldn't be with someone who is exactly like them. It would be too boring. Juliet has shown that she can be just as funny as shawny boy,lol.... I still laugh at the end of their "secret meeting" in "Game Set...Muuurder?" where she gets shawn at his own joke about roosters,lol... plus.... THEY BOTH KNOW THEIR MOVIES AND ATHLETES!! lol.

To be honest, I watch the show mainly for the interaction between Shawn and Gus, though I love Shawn and Henry's relationship as well. I am not anti romance, but it is not important to the show for me. I am just as happy with the Shawn, Jules friendship/flirting.

Thats a relief that someone feels the same way as me. If Shawns and Juilet got together, it would ruin their flirting. That's is funny. I REALLY dont want them to get together. and yeah, the interactions should be shawn/gus or shawn/henry. they have some great relationships. but back to the shawn/juilet thing, i would honesly hate it if they got together. they should just stay friends. if it goes to far, it will ruin the show.

Thanks for this post, it really gives people to give their opinions!

I honestly don't think that it would ruin the show if they got together. I think it would give us something interesting to watch.

I agree with you on that. I think that the show wouldn't be ruined. However, I can see where people would think the show would be ruined if they did get together because it might get od or boring. But the writers are so good, I think they would know how to play it. ya know?!?

But yeah, I don't think they should be together yet, but they should eventually. Their flirting is adorable and I love their cute little moments. (Close talking, Couples Skating) yadda yadda.

(:

I can see why people might think it would ruin the show but I personally think it would make it more interesting. The writers would do really well with a relationship between them. And I do agree with you that it shouldn't be just yet, but eventually would be great.

Yes I agree. 4th season might be a little early. But I do wanna see them at least cuddle or even kiss or something,lol.... I wanna see Juliet get jealous of Shawn/Abby thing wink.gif I mean Shawn got jealous of Jules relationship with Cameron Luntz.... now it's her turn to get all jealous,lol.... GOSH You girls are making me.... let's just say weird, lol.
