"Maybe this won't be so bad. He's been nice and…and he's done nothing to make me feel anxious about. Except that he's so damn easy to look at," she thought.

She was slicing vegetables for the salad. He had set out smoked salmon, cheese and crackers.

"Is there a Mrs. Detective Goren? she asked

"No. Is there a Mr. Chase?"

"Only my dad, I took back my maiden name after the divorce."

"Would you like something to drink? I brought beer," he said.

She would love a beer, but settled for a soda.

He leaned against the sink and watched as she sliced a carrot. "There's a knife missing," he said pointing to set on the counter.

"I'm using it," she replied.

"You're using one. There are six slots, four knives. One is unaccounted for. It looks to be the long butcher knife."

Trying to keep the nervousness from her voice she said, "Maybe it's just misplaced, maybe it's in a drawer."

He moved behind her. The little hairs on the back of her neck rose. Her stomach dropped. With his breath inches away from her ear he replied, "I think its…right here." Before she could move, he produced the knife from her pocket.

He stepped back allowing her to turn and face him. Naturally she was surprised by his actions, but her expression was also mixed with a hint of fear and a twinge of guilt. She finally spoke. "What, you didn't think I wouldn't protect myself? You have a gun."

"I'm a cop."

"How do I know you're not the type to use that to your advantage?" she asked.

He straightened his shoulders and said, "I wouldn't. You're going to have to trust me. Can I trust you?"

She sighed and removed her coat. "I grabbed the knife when you first got here. I was scared. I'm not even sure what I would have done with it," she replied.

"Thanks, I appreciate the honesty," he said with a smile.

His smile raised her heart rate. "Let's eat, and by the way, I think I'll have that beer," she replied.

I'm caught up here now, and really enjoying this. It's fun. I have a request, tho...could you please keep all the chapters in one thread, and then just change the title on the first post to tell us where to find the next chapter? Thanks!

So, it's snowing outside, she thinks he's dreamy (at least that's what I'd be thinking), there's a nice fire going, they're havin' a beer, noshin' some dinner...and then???
