The wood burning stove was gradually warming the interior of the small cabin, one candle and her flashlight the only source of light. She sat and waited. "They'll be here soon," she thought. She glanced at her watch and realized she had the same thought thirty minutes ago. "How soon is soon?" she asked her self. She fixed a cup of tea with the water she heated on the stove. Warmth returned to her fingers and toes. She removed her gloves and boots.
"That's odd" he thought when he first saw the car. He reasoned it was the caretaker. But the cabin was dark and judging by the amount of snow, the car had been there for a while. Instinctively he reached for his gun in the glove compartment.
"Finally!" she shouted when she saw headlights. She jumped up and opened the door. "It's about…ti," the words stuck in her throat. Her heart pounded and her stomach knotted in fear. Her mind raced, "He's big and he has one hand in his pocket. He probably has a gun or a knife. Shut the door, shut the door!"
"Is there a problem?" he asked.
She stood, frozen in place.
"My name is Robert Goren, I'm a police officer. I'm going to slowly reach in my pocket and show you my identification."
"Oh God, there's been an accident! Where are they? Are they badly hurt?"
"No…no accident, look, there seems to be a mistake. Max told me the cabin would be empty this weekend. He must have mixed up the dates," he replied.
"I don't know anyone named Max."
"The place is dark. What are you doing here?"
"The storm must have knocked out the electricity," she said before thinking.
"And you're here waiting for…?"
"I'm waiting for my friends. They should be here soon."
"It's cold out here, may I come in?"
"It isn't much warmer inside. You can stay where you are."
"You said you don't know Max. Do your friends know him?"
"We don't know anyone named Max…oh no. Oh God…wait. I think…"
"Think what?"
His cell phone rang.
"Okay. Hey thanks. You were saying?" as he stepped aside her and into the cabin.
"I think I'm in the wrong cabin. That explains why the key wouldn't work," she said smacking her forehead.
"You broke in?"
"I was cold, tired and hungry. It was getting dark and I don't know my way around these mountain roads. I broke a piece of glass, unlocked the bathroom window and crawled in. Are you going to arrest me?"
He grinned and said, "No Ms. Chase, I'm not going to arrest you. Vermont is a little out of my jurisdiction."
"You know my name? How….wait you ran my plates?" she asked.
He nodded, "Just before you opened the door." He walked over to the stove and rubbed his cold hands together. "I'll get some more wood."
She stood in the kitchen area keeping a comfortable distance between them. She wasn't sure she could trust him. He looked pretty scruffy for a New York detective. She stuck the butcher knife in her coat pocket just in case. She phoned her friends and explained what happened. Disconnecting she sighed. They were stuck in the snow storm. If they were lucky, they'd be there by noon the next day. She didn't share that information with him.
"Look at these directions and tell me where I went wrong. Maybe we can find the correct cabin. I'll be happy to leave," she told him.
Holding an armful of wood he said, "We're not going anywhere. The snowfall is too heavy. You can't see two feet in front. I don't think your friends will make it." He shook snow from his hair and placed two more logs in the stove…

"My friend, she's getting married in a month. She's gone a little off the deep end with all the planning. We decided to get her away from all that madness and bring her up here to decompress a little. That's why I'm in Vermont, how about you?"
"I…I hit a rough spot this last year. I need to regain some perspective," he replied.
She sipped her beer. "The rough spot, personal or professional?"
He was mildly surprised by her bluntness. "A little of…both," he said quietly.
"I'd bet that happens a lot in your line of work. You said you were a detective, homicide?"
"Major Case."
"Oh, the heavy hitters," she replied.
He nodded and asked, "What about you? I noticed a sketch pad and pencils setting by your bags. Are you an artist?"
"It's a hobby. I work for Smithsonian Magazine."
He leaned forward and grinned. "I read Smithsonian. You're a writer?"
She shook her head and replied, "I work in the personnel department." She leaned her head back and laughed, "You actually read the magazine? Even my friends don't read it!"
He stood and walked over to where his bags sat and retrieved two copies of the magazine. "Here, I'm a little behind on my reading. Actually the magazine helped solve a case a few years ago."
"It did?" she asked skeptically.
"There was this case involving a young man who converted to Islam…"
"Wait, before you get started, get us another beer."
"…and a police sharp shooter killed the bomber before he reached the staging area." He'd left out the part where the sharp shooter was inches from taking him out.
"Wow, an article from Smithsonian. I'll be sure and tell them at work." She paused to look at him and said, "You're good at what you do."
"Yes, yes I am."
She stood to clear the table and yawned
"You can take the sofa out here where it's warmer," he said tossing the empty bottles in a trash can.
"No, I'll take the bunk bed. I'll be fine with a few extra blankets." She gathered her bag, walked to the bedroom, and locked the door. Slipping out of her jeans and sweater, she wondered what Detective Goren's rough spot had been.

That's okay. Just a weekend spent in a cabin with someone as interesting and fascinating as Bobby would be good enough. Just giving you a hard time. I would be nice to read a story that DOESN'T have the femme ending up in bed/romance/marriage with Bobby. Who knows? A weekend spent with "her" might be just what Bobby needs -- good, stimulating conversation and a no strings/nothing expected time spent with another person.
I'm with you, no matter where it ends up. Just write and see what happens.

You've given me hope! Thanks.
I really like the Smithsonian connection. I could see Bobby end up being an advisor to the magazine, maybe on forensic-type articles or psychology...maybe setting him up for a job after the force. OK...just some rambling thoughts in case you wanted to stay clear of the romanitc entanglement path and make this a professional networking oppportunity.

Jryan peeks into the window, "hmm it's dark in there." She walks around the back door, "Oh it's unlocked!" She slowly turns the doornob and opens the door, it slowly creaks open, she takes a step inside, "creeaaaaaakkkkkk"
"dang these floor boards are loud," she mutters to herself. She takes another step and "Surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Everyone jumps up and claps and laughs at jryan. "What the hell is going on?"
Peyton: I knew if I wrote an interesting story with Bobby stuck in a cabin It would get you out here for your surprise Birthday Party!
Flashymom: Yeah we got you alright, bet you thought you would find Bobby here alone asleep on the sofa and take advantage of him, but now you are here for your Birthday party.
Jryan: Uh, ladies, my birthday isn't till June.

Peyton: Well I guess I better get back to writing then.
Jryan: I guess you better, and uh, you sure Bobby isn't around here somewhere?

I'm sorry about the crummy work hours, Peyton! I'm having the same lack of motivation about things in general right now. I think it's the weather...it doesn't seem to want to get warm and I'm just done with being cold!
So, today, even though I have tons of chores to do and have to get ready for a business trip on Monday, I'm going to wear some pink, do a little retail therapy and look at all the brightly-colored spring/summer stuff, have a nice lunch, drink something with an umbrella in it, and pretend it's summer!

Then I'll still have to do chores, but I'll be in a zippier mood.
Do something that makes you happy today!

I, too, was hoping there was more posted, but alas, no. I DID, however, like JRyan's surprise party episode! Very clever, JRyan!
Peyton, I am in the same boat with you. I'm stuck in the middle of my next chapter, too. You'd think spring would make me zippier, but it's not. I know where I want to take the story, but it's not where the characters are willing to go, so I'm stuck! I could try to force the issue, but I'm not feeling very forceful at the moment.
Well, gotta go. Need to get some Scout troop data taken care of for The Hubby. I'm the defacto administration/secretary/membership person/chair/head thingy-ma-bopper doer. Comes with being married to the Scout Master: I get to do all the stuff no one else wants to!
Y'all have an absolutely ferociously, fantastically, FIERCE Friday!

******************************************
The bed was a bit lumpy and small, but it felt good just to lie down. It had been a very long day and she was looking forward to a good night's sleep. She drifted off to the sounds of the blowing winds.
She was dressed in a blue satin gown standing barefoot in the middle of a room. She was surrounded completely by white. A white marble staircase flanked by two columns of white was to her right. Atop the columns were huge bouquets of white tulips, roses and magnolias. The only piece of furniture was a long white sofa. Wall sconces held white candles. There was a mirror behind her and she looked at the reflection. She recognized the face but her hair was different. It was dyed red. She's the only source of color in the room. She hears a sound behind her. At the top of the staircase stands a man dressed in black. He's carrying a gold badge in his left hand. The black turtleneck sweater falls just below the waistband of black leather pants. Black boots add another two inches to his height. His hair shows no hit of gray and falls in waves to his shoulders. She can't see his face, but she knows who he is. He descends the stairs in three strides, moving like a panther. The man is hypnotizing. The man is menacing. She tries to run but he grabs her arm. His touch is cold. His voice is barely audible.
"Don't, I want you," he says. She wants to run, but can't move. He turns to her so she can see their reflections in the mirror.
"You're afraid of me, but you still want me, don't you?" he murmurs in her ear. All she can manage is "I…don't…"
"Hush…Look at you. You're afraid, but intrigued and that surprises you," he says.
She trembles. She's pressed against him. Through the leather she can feel his arousal. She hears a click and sees a flash of silver. With two swift flicks, the straps are cut, leaving her gown pooled around her feet. She's completely exposed and can't bear it. She shuts her eyes. His ice-cold hands leave her hips and find their way to her breasts.
"Open your eyes and look," he demands. He flicks his serpent-like tongue across her shoulder and up the back of her neck. He controls the pace as they begin to move together
She sat up straight and hit her head on the upper bunk. "Ouch, damn, ouch!" she cried out. With a trembling hand she touched her forehead and felt the sticky lump. "Oh great, I drew blood," she whispered.
There was a tap on the door. "Is something wrong?"
"I…I forgot where I was and hit my head," she said slowly opening the door.
"That's a pretty good sized lump and you're bleeding. Let's get some ice on that. There's a first aid kit in the kitchen."
She sat in front of the wood burning stove and held the ice to her head. He handed her a glass of amber liquid. "What's this?" she asked.
"Brandy. Max always has a bottle around."
"Do I look like I need a brandy? It's a little scratch and bump on the head," she replied.
"I'm sorry. You looked a little upset when you opened your door. Bad dream?" he said.
She took the glass and said, "Strange dream, a really strange dream. One I care not to rethink, thank you." She sipped her brandy, grateful he was wearing jeans and an old gray sweatshirt.
"Well Detective, I think I'm going to give this sleep thing another shot. Only this time I'll take the upper bunk. I can clear the ceiling," she said.
"Just remember, there's about a four foot drop to the floor," he replied.
