HI !

I am taking my 9 year old niece to the Dog show. I have never been, I purchased the two day passes with seats. I was wondering if someone can tell me what I should expect, what is recommended to see. I saw somewhere that you can go on the floor, not sure where and when you can do this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated !
(My niece Loves Dogs - especially Chihuahua's !!!)

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!

I am pretty sure that you can only get onto the green floor with an exhibitors ticket.
Don't try and stand against the railing overlooking the rings, security will move you. Believe me, sometimes it is better not to be on the green carpet! It is crazy down there. Handlers and their assistants are rushing to get dogs to the ring and if they have one dog in one ring and another dog in another ring, with coinciding ring times, there are running people. It is an ocean of people on the carpet and the benching area. I always swear I will never go back, but I always do.

Go to www.westminsterkennelclub.org

look for judging schedule on right side of screen. Look for breeds you are interested in and what time they show and what ring number they are in. If there is more than one breed you want to see and their ring time is the same, but in another ring and there are other breeds ahead of your favorite breed. A judge take about 3 minutes per dog to judge.

I will be there on Tuesday. My daughter shows at 2:45pm in ring 1. Her # is 10. Toy Manchester Terriers. But, TMT are the 4th breed in the ring after 24 entries in the other breeds. Take into consideration there maybe absentees, I will consider 4 total absent from those 24. This leaves 20. 20 times 3 equals 60 minutes. So it may be 3:45 before she shows her dog. This means we will not go to the ring until 3:15.

I am trying to explain this, so that you understand, you more than likely will be able to see more than one breed, if they are scheduled for the same ring time. Look at the schedule, before you go, calculate the times and plan on what ring you should be at and at what time.

Pedigree always hands out the best gift bags full of things. Petsmart and I believe there are others that do as well.

The only Westminster Souviners are sold by "Take The Lead". This is a very worthwhile organization via the AKC. They provide services, support and care for people in the sport of purebred dogs who suffer from the devastation of life-threatening or terminal illness. Their items are very good quality and you know that your money is going to a very good cause. I support Take The Lead annually, because I have known people that have benefited from it.

My daughter and her dog will be benched in row 2 on Tuesday. More than likely, I will be there all day. Look for the Toy Manchesters and stop by and say hi to Gracie. She loves meeting new people.

Have fun and enjoy,
Cynthia

Number one Rule of ALL Shows- is to ask to see a dog if you are in the benched or grooming area. Do not approach someone who is trying to get to a ring time. Someone who is usually a great person to learn about the breed from- will be short, quick and rude- because- they have a time and a job to get too!

If your daughter loves Chihuahua's- go to the AKC- website and look up the standard for the breed, and look to see what the dogs are being judged for. Learn all that you can about them, before you go. I use to LOVE Afgan Hounds- until I was around them and realized that these independent headstrong beautiful dogs- aren't for me!!! So what you might think you love- you may find out- that you just admire from a distance.

Also after the showing- then feel free to approach the handlers and breeders. You will find them much more relaxed and able to spend time with you. But then again- ask if you can see the dog first- not all dogs like strangers approaching them- even show dogs who are use to having 100's of hands on them!

But most of all- Enjoy the show! Have fun! And try to see as much as you can!

Good Luck to your daughter Parson! My son has his first show on Friday! He has done puppy matches- but his first real show is Friday! And if he beats me again......I'll never live it down!
