Sorry for bumping this very old thread but-uh... it just made me think of a funny story that happened a few years ago, almost 10 (wow! time flies)
I was online checking mail and my friend was on the computer next to mine, at the university library. Suddenly she comes out with: hey, look what I found! Dick Van Dyke's address! Looks like a home address, not fanmail stuff...
me: ehm... yes and-uh...
friend: hey, you're the one that speaks English, why don't you send a postcard?
me: me? a postcard? to... Dick Van Dyke??? you're nuts, lol...
friend: hey, if the address is wrong, who cares... a postcard is harmless
me: whatever...
So we pick up a postcard with a nice photo of the Tuscan countryside and I write more or less the following:
Hi Mr. Van Dyke, big fan of yours. First time I saw you I didn't really see you because my mother was expecting of me and watched a Mary Poppins' re-run at the Summer theater. I like your show, Diagnosis murder and by the way, I'm sure Malibu is a nice place, but-uh... Tuscany's better

Best regards, Sara
I sent the postcard as I would send it to anyone, no envelope, no pre-stamped returning envelope for an autograph or anything, just my address in tiny print in a corner, "just in case".
8 months later...
I go pick up the mail and find a big envelope from California. Mmm, do I know anyone in California? Back then I didn't, so I was curious to know who was sending this (handwritten address, no returning address). Well, it was Mr Van Dyke, or an assistant?, and the content was a nice black&white photo of him with autograph "Hi Sara, God Bless, Dick Van Dyke"
I started laughing so hard... Holy skunk, look at this, the man must have had pity of my crazyness! What a shame! Needless to say, my friend was a bit jealous anyway, lol... Who would have thought?!
This was a very crazy story, I know (and the Mary Poppins reference is true) and I'm not even a big fan of autographs. I wouldn't mind getting one if I cross the person on the street, for instance, or have a photo taken with him/her, though I'm sure not all actors/actresses appreciate being asked for a photo. I've met a few, some more famous, other less famous, some I met accidentally, some for work, and the nicest part was always saying hello, maybe shake hands, the 'I like your work' / 'nice to meet you and have a great day' part and smile away. It doesn't leave any "proof" of meeting, but I dig it a lot more than collecting autographs.
Just my two cents, of course...
