HI everyone! I was thinking about the Book Club thread and I decided to steal, err, borrow Lulu's idea and create a music thread. I was wondering if everyone would like to share what they've been listening to lately, either on their iPods, CDs, tapes, 8tracks or records.
OK here's my short list of songs I've had on repeat lately on my iPod:
1. "You Found Me" by The Fray, I'm not even a fan of the group but I really love this song.
2. "Swing, Baby, Swing" by The DNC, LOVE this it puts me in such a great mood!
3. "Dejame Tocar" from The Burn Notice soundtrack, need I say more? wink.gif
4. "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2(Live off of "Rattle and Hum") it's such an excellent version of the song, IMHO.
5. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by The Rolling Stones, one of the best songs, ever!
6. "Popular" from "Wicked" by Kristin Chenoweth, it's just so much fun you can't help but smile when you listen to it!
7. "Celebrity Skin" by Hole it has such a great hook.
8. "Darshan" by B21 & Jassi Sidhu I have no idea what they're saying since I don't speak Hindi but I loved this when I heard it in "Bend It Like Beckham".
9. "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)" by Alanis Morisette off of the "DeLovely" soundtrack-it's Cole Porter at his most witty, IMHO.
10"Dirty Laundry" by Bitter:Sweet I've loved this song for the past year now and I still love it everytime I hear it, it's fantastic.

OK next?

Edited because I wrote two years instead of one about "Dirty Laundry". Yes, I am that exact! wink.gif

Hey Fi,
by all means steal a topic. Why not right? I thought of it too, but it had been done awhile ago. Haven't heard of some you have listed. everyone I listen to continuously is on my own myspace page. Gee? I wonder why. I have a very short list as most can see as they are only the people I have met.

But my taste is ecletic. Not ecentric. Ecletic. there is a difference of a letter. smile.gif

I am a classic rock girl but I listen to jazz (some) and rock/pop. Classical but only at Lincoln Center or anyone playing somewhere.

Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, John Pizzerelli, Maroon 5, Lindsey Buckingham, Aerosmith, Who, Kurth and Taylor. etc... . smile.gif Otmar Liebert and of course who can forget Foreigner, Survivor.
siggy26
Another great thread topic! Thanks, FiRocks!

"You Found Me" has been on my iPod since it came out on Tuesday. Love the song!

I have such an eclectic taste in music. I listen to pretty much anything except rap, so my list would be pretty diversified. Lots of Top 100 songs/artists ...

Right now I'm really loving:

-- Sugarland's latest release, Love on the Inside. Lead vocalist Jennifer Nettles has such an incredibly powerful voice, and you can literally feel the energy as it builds throughout the album. The deluxe version of the CD has 17 tracks, nearly unheard of for a mainstream artist.

-- Miranda Lambert's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Lady Antebellum's self-titled album ----> (because the harmonies are incredible, and well... I got the chance to interview this group back in September and they're three of the nicest individuals you'd ever wanna meet)

-- David Cook's brand new CD is great. If we're sticking with rock, I've also got quite a few songs from Daughtry, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down and Snow Patrol on the iPod.

-- Just broke out some holiday music today -- mainly because of the white stuff falling from the sky. Mom's so proud we've got Elvis' original recording of Blue Christmas.

You know what's weird? I uploaded all of this holiday music to my iPod on Friday totally ready to embrace the Holiday season and all that, then, then I go outside and it feels like it's about 90, sorry but 90 degree weather and holiday songs just don't go not even in California! wink.gif
krocla
But today in Minnesota, we received a couple inches of wet snow (the kind of snow that sticks to the tree branches like in winter postcards) with a couple more inches expected tonight so I have been listening to holiday music while decorating my apartment. Also getting the decorations ready to take to work tomorrow to decorate my desk and cubicle space. It is hard to believe that tomorrow is December 1st!

FiRocks
I'm glad the weather put you in the holiday spirit! After my last post I cranked up my CD player with some holiday tunes and did start decorating my house a bit. I just hope none of my decorations melt in the heat! wink.gif

Seriously? We're getting a wintry mix here in PA. It started out as snow this morning, changed to sleet and then to all rain. Now as the temperature continues to drop it's gradually turning back into snow. I don't think it's going to accumulate but the roads are probably going to be a bit touchy in the morning.

We made chicken soup tonight just because of the weather. It really hit the spot. Even after three cups of coffee today I just couldn't get warm ... but now I'm nice and toasty wink.gif And while the kitchen's a mess I think we might pop some banana muffins into the oven. Who wants one?! cool.gif

P.S. - Wish I could send you all a postcard of the lights here in Bethlehem. If there was ever a time to live in the "Christmas City", it would be now. wink.gif

Ooooh! Are there any photos to be had on the local paper, by any chance? cool.gif

I've really enjoyed hearing what others are listening to on their iPods. smile.gif

I also have eclectic taste. You can find everything from Stevie Wonder to Tchaikovsky on my iPod. If I had to choose a favorite album, it would probably be the White Album. Yes, everybody always says it's the best album the Beatles ever made, but really - it is a great album. I get such a kick out of this album, and I especially love the cheekier numbers, like Happiness is a Warm Gun. And the little ditties like Martha, My Dear. It's hard to beat an album that boasts Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da *and* Helter Skelter on it.

I recently discovered blues musician R.L. Burnside. I'm new to the blues scene, and I like this guy a lot. I grabbed his album Come On In off of iTunes the other day and have been listening to it pretty regularly. [if there are any lovers of blues music out there, I'm open to getting recommendations! Oh, and I also downloaded some Stevie Ray Vaughn, who comes to me by way of The Sopranos, of all things, lol!]

Today I spent organizing my holiday songs. I'm working on organizing a Christmas iMix - when I'm done with it, I'll post the playlist. My all-time favorite Christmas album is called Christmas Cocktails (it's part of the Ultra Lounge series). There's some terrific songs on this album, including a very cool swing/big band version of The Nutcracker Suite and a kicky version of (Everybody's Waitin' For) The Man with the Bag. It's a very cool cat Christmas album. cool.gif

And of course, there's The Carpenters and their fantastic Christmas songs! I LOVE Karen Carpenter's voice - seriously, I think she had one of the most beautiful voices of any singer I've ever heard.

Great idea for a thread, FiRocks! smile.gif

Cool, siggy! biggrin.gif Have been listening to all of these performers a lot recently, too. Especially DC's and Nickelback's new albums.

Gia, like you, I love blues...have several of BB's albums (fav right now is Bad Case of Love) and love Muddy Waters, too. Listen to Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower, Crosstown Traffic, and Castles Made of Sand a lot.

For romantic R&B have been playing Donny Hathaway's version of A Song For You over and over...think I have it eight times on one of my playlists(!), and Jazz...Diana Krall's I've Got You Under My Skin, the Live in Paris version.

Also have been listening to Better Than Ezra, Lifehouse, and Wolfmother lately.

Well, I am Jewish and half christian. So, While I celebrate both. I do listen to christmas songs as well, they only have Adam Sandlers nutty versions of songs. I listen to John Pizzerelli's Christmas CD. Bing Crosby and the tree trimming christmas song CD. Also, I have a classic 33 RECORD of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Well, before my mom goes and gives it to my sister for her kids and then it gets tossed altogether. :(And yes, the Boss's Christmas song still rules. In the subburbs the lights are up. This week the ones in New York City go up to the Celebutante fanfare. Then it's tourist season all over again til January. So, come on by. Say hello. smile.gif

I'm shocked that I like Sugarland's "All I Want To Do". It's such a cute happy song. I'm definitely NOT a country fan.

  • Chrisette Michele's "Your Joy"

I'm not sure if you've listened to any of their other material, but IMHO I think it's hard to classify Sugarland under just one genre of music.
Check out their recent performance on the CMA Awards if you get a minute ... very U2-esque I think. (and I wasn't a big fan of the song until I heard them sing it live)

Back to the topic of Christmas music ...
Can anyone recommend a CD or compilation that is strictly instrumental?

Besides "The Nutcracker" you mean? That's the first thing that comes to mind when you say Christmas and instrumental. I also have this great CD called "Handel for the Holidays" it's all instrumental except for the last piece when they do the "Hallelujah" Chorus from "The Messiah". I also have this other fantastic CD that I've had for years that's called "Piano Christmas, the label is something called "Natrue Quest" I've had it for about 10 years so I don't even know if you could find it anywhere anymore, but I thought I'd throw that out there anyhow. OK good luck in your search!

I kinda figured you'd say that when I saw your list. BB King to Bob Marley. A wide swath of music categories. I just recently downloaded George Benson's classic "Weekend In LA". Great album! Also, since you like Bob Marley I assume you've listened to Jimmy Cliff? I love his "In Concert: Best of Jimmy Cliff" album. His classic "Many Rivers To Cross" is unbelievably beautiful. I saw him years ago in Philadelphia at a little hole in the wall club that catered to the U of Penn college crowd. It was worth bumping into drunken college kids to see him live, up close, and personal.

Additionally, what's up with these European's, namely Adele & James Morrison, spinning out the RB sound. They are both youngsters too. It appears to be dead here in US with hip hop dominating the music scene. There's another RB singer that I have on my list that is really old school: Anthony Hamilton. I love his "Can't Let Go" song.

OMG!!! I have Macy Gray's "Still" on my top rated play list too. I love that one. Not a Beyonce fan but my all time fav R&B song is Marvin Gaye's "Let Get It On". Of course it's on my top rated play list too. Al Green is from my hometown of Memphis. So, I love me some Al "Grits" Green. I have "What A Wonderful Thing Love Is" from him on my playlist.

I'm going on a tangent about R&B 'cause I have been in that mood for about a year. Previously, all I listened to was Jazz. I have many more Jazz recordings than anything else.

Sounds good. Afterwards, I'll take a nice winter's nap.  laugh.gif

I lived in southern NJ area for some time and NEVER got use to the cold weather. I grew up in TN where we rarely got snow and the winters were pretty mild, spring glorious, summers humid and unbearable, and fall was postcard perfect. I went to college in St. Louis and the weather was a nightmare for me. In TN you could wear a leather coat all winter. In St. Louis it was, look cute in a leather coat or freeze to death. Needless to say, I went for the frumpy look. After St. Louis, I made a beeline to southern CA. Though, as I mentioned I moved to the east coast (Rhode Island and NJ) for a number of years, I moved back to CA (northern Cal/Bay Area) the first chance I got and don't plan to leave.

The Boss.

Wait, which song by The Boss? Enquiring minds want to know!

This weekend I was driving through a toll booth and I was listening to "Born to Run" and I was close to the end of the song and was just singing my little heart out, you know - "baby we were born to run!!!! whoooooaaaaa, whooooooaaaa, whoa whoa whoa whoa, whoa whoa!" and so on and so forth. Anyway, I zoomed up to the toll booth and flung my change into it with great gusto - only to unexpectedly find a toll booth operator standing *right* there. He immediately started laughing. I also had a similar experience several years ago, except that time I was listening to Pat Benetar's Heartbreaker. Again, me going nuts and singing my heart out - "You're the right kind of sinner, to release my inner fantasy!" and so on and so forth. The toll booth operator looked kinda scared that time, actually. laugh.gif

Actually, after you brought up Sesame Street and the muppets, I was driving with some friends to this Christmas concert and wound up sitting in the backseat thinking about that song "The Rainbow Connection" (remember this one? From one of those Muppet Movies?) - before I knew it, we were all humming the tune and trying in vain to remember what in the hell the lyrics to that song were. laugh.gif

What's your sing-along story, LuLu?

Wow, throw in classic ac/dc. cool. and "You Shook Me All Night Long" done Country style is hilarious by Evan and Jaron with a mop with a face on it. As for a favorite sing-a-long song. Never actually did one. I live vicariously through others. But it did sound good so I figured someone had to have a story, just not me. sad.gif

I love Bruce's "Streets of Philadelphia"

"God Only Knows" by Joe Henry (I heard this song for the first time the other day on the "Turner Classic Movies Remembers" tribute to those in the film and television industry who passed away this year - to watch it click here). There were quite a lot of big stars who left us in 2008...may they be at peace and their families remember them fondly.

I can't believe Paul Newman is gone. What a cool guy. Sigh...

Yes. I absolutely loved Paul Newman. What a wonderful spirit! And he was amazingly gorgeous.

I'm currently listening to "Sleigh Ride/Marshmallow World" from Kristin Chenoweth's Christmas CD "A Lovely Way To Spend Christmas". I was just saying yesterday how burned out I was on Christmas songs but I picked up the CD today when doing some last, last minute shopping and I'm so glad I did. It's so cute!
