I think it is interesting to compare the two characters. I'm slowly starting to warm up to Zach. His mannerisms seemed a little forced to me the first couple of W/N episodes. I hope the show (and him) get another year for him to fully grow into his character.
The two men are both wounded in some way. We know quite a bit now about Bobby, and his father (who turned out not to be) and his schizophrenic mother and his drug-addicted brother. Zach had parents who were shrinks, right? Well, that right there might made you a little wacky. And he was away from the job for a while. I suspect there are other backstory issues for Zach, though they may only be hinted at and not dwelled on (like's Bobby's were in the beginning of the show).
I agree that Bobby seems warmer, most empathetic to the people he's interviewing - even if he's trapping them into revealing their crimes. He has a way of getting into people's heads and knowing them. Declan did teach him some things. Do you remember the crazy radio woman? She said something to the effect that she knew Bobby cared about her. Bobby said (quote maybe not exact): I didn't mean for you to see that. Bobby has a big heart and he's usually afraid to give it away. It's also true that he had this vast fund of knowledge. So when Bobby solves a case, it's usually because he knows the person or knows an arcane fact. But, I can believe that he knows these things because I know him - in that fictional kind of way.

That makes the stories make sense to me.
So far, I've felt more like Zach just makes these big leaps - because he's psychic-like. I call it "The Deanna Troi plot device." You know: "I sense that they're going to attack, Captain." Maybe, I'll get to know Zach and understand how his brain works and it will all make sense to me. He's a very talented actor and it must be hard to come into an established show and make this guy Zach come to life. Hope I have a chance to watch them a few more years.
I think we will get information on Nichols a little faster than we got it about Goren in those first few years. We already know that his parents are psychiatrists, he quit the NYPD after 9/11, he was Ross' partner prior to quitting, he has "issues with authority", he started medical school to become a psychiatrist then quit to become a cop, he has "daddy issues", he hasn't seen his father in "a couple of decades" even though he lives in NY, his parents served discussions psychiatric disorders "with his Corn Flakes", he was praised a lot as a child which led to him thinking too highly of himself (LOVED that little discussion with Wheeler!).

Hmmmm...does anyone know if the W/N episodes like the G/E episodes are being shown out of order? What LillyHobbs says about Nichols mannerisms seeming a little forced in the first couple of episodes makes me realize that is a big part of the reason that I didn't care too much for this episode. Sorry I am not a hater. I like JG and I really did like him in the other episodes especially "In Treatment" but I just wasn't feeling Nichols in this episode. Wheeler's interegation scene with Logan's old girlfriend was good. I think the things Wheeler was saying to Helen hit very close to home for her.
I am guessing this was shown out of order just because Wheeler looked "less pregnant" than in the last episode.

Anyone know why the name "Astoria" was in there? I know it's the name of a place in New York, but according to the show, Helen was not living in that part of New York. Any ideas?
I've been wondering about the Astoria connection, too. I've got no ideas.
