Anyone ever train a cat to use a leash? If so any pointers?
The best thing is to start when they are young. It works the same with clipping their nails, start when they are tiny. If they act antsy, stop and let them go and come back to it later. There is no rush to train them, just have to let them get used to it. We used one on our last cat. It was a figure 8 harness that we bought at a local feed store. Just put it on when they are relaxed, in the house. Let them wander around in it to get used to it. Don't talk when you put it on...they don't know what your saying anyway and may take it as being a bad thing to hear you talking and it seems to be more soothing to just give them a pat or a treat and put it on. When Mounds, don't ask why we called him that, got used to the harness than we put on a very light weight lead and let him drag it around. After that we took the end of it and walked out the slider door. He followed us right out. We clipped the leash on one of those tie out stakes for dogs and just worked in the flower garden and yard around him. He loved it. The only probelm was if you got out of his sight he would cry. Well brought mina for her first Vet check and shots, well she has ear mites and ringworms, so have to start giving her baths once a week with special shampoo, and keep her lathered up for 10min! Locked in a kennel, getting ready to do that for the first time, the ringworms were detected around her face, so I have to put mineral oil in her eyes and ears. This might hurt me more than her. Wish me luck.

Ya... I think that's often the case with these rescued babies. My two had ear mites and fleas and some kind of worms too... intestinal ones though. Roundworms maybe? Anyway, the less serious kind. We got lucky. My vet gave them Revolution which killed all three in one dose, so it wasn't so bad. I don't envy you giving long cat baths every week! I hope it clears up soon!

Oh! those cats are soo soo cute! I just want to hug them right now! I especially love that picture with orange cat in your arms. So cute!
And the picture of the cat and dog like holding paws!! So adorable! I just LOVE animals.
My cat named Lucy went after a bat once. It was funny. She totally jumped up onto the reclincer and brougt that bat down. I think you'd only think it was funny if you were actually there.
But now she has had kittens and I named my favorite one Bobby. There's 6 kittens. Only one of them is a girl. The girl's name is Oliva. You know? After Olivia benson? I just LOVE the name Olivia. It's so pretty. And one time my mom was leaving to go somewhere, and Olivia got out. My mom tried to catch her. But she ran away. It was winter, and when my mom came back she was just shivering. Poor Olivia!
Oh don't freak out when I tell you this. Bobby, my favorite kitten, looks like his mother. He's like the same size of his mother, and he's fatter than his mother. And Rupert (his sibling) thought Bobby was the mama kitty. It was SO disgusting. Ruperts always the stinker cat, besides Jack. Jack has fur that my mom says looks like a Tux, but he's piraty. My mom wanted him to call him 'Bond, Jack Bond' I thought that ws funny.

My brother has one named Cody. A couple of summers ago my brother and his family were going on vacation for a week so we offered to babysit Cody for the week. He was so good and so sweet. We had a good time. He kept a diary while he was at my house which his parents got a kick out of reading when they got home. Every day we would go out and play with his red ball. Then seriously on the LAST day we were out playing with his red ball and he peed on it! Ewwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!! I told my brother about it and he said "he always does that." So all week we played ball and the whole time he was peeing on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Luckily I am big on hand washing. So I always washed my hands when we came in from playing. It was gross but funny. I still love 'im. He's always so happy to see us when we go to visit.

It's harder to get pictures of Hobbes when he's awake.

Cuz he's always playing.

Calvin is my Little Prince... and far more likely to pose for me.

Sometimes Hobbes will fall asleep upside down in your arms... still purring.

And sometimes Calvin will curl up with a friend.

But most of the time they still sleep together... on their favorite perch.

They are just darling. And I have to say, you are quite good at photography. Great poses, close ups...candids...love them!QUOTE (imnotlikealltherest @ Dec 18 2008, 06:41 PM)

Well all yall complaining about snow, guess I better turn down the AC here, It's 70 degrees, I would love some snow. Don't know how shaggy would react since he has never seen any, lol. New Orleans had 1-2 inches for a day and interuppted all regular programing, and since our local TV stations come from them, we got it rubbed in our faces, but we didn't have snow and no network TV except for usa and tnt. But no ABC, NBC or CBS. Cajuns can't drive in snow or ice. Roads closed, 18 wheeler turned over. Business' closed. My fibro acts up when we get into the 40s so guess I aint made for the cold either. Biggest problem here you don't know how to dress, one day it's 70-80 next day it's 35 degrees. Or it starts off 35 degrees then by the end of the day it's 80 degrees. No wonder the kids are always sick at this time of the year.

all such cute pics! I can't wait to get my flat sold so I can move to a house with a garden so I can get my cat (Mr Flying Monkey has promised me this as a house warming present). I live in a 2nd story flat just now so my choice of pets is quite limited. I had two guinea pigs, called Boris and Monty. Boris died just before christmas 2004 after suffering a ruptured bladder, i only have one pic of him and his brother and its on the pc that broke down in November. I need to go pick up the files from my friend to restore them to the new pc. Monty (or Montgomery as i called him when he was a naughty boy) died 22 April last year after suffering a stroke at the grand old age of 4. I still miss the wee guy. SOBS.

Boris and Monty...I love it! I had a little piggy, too. He was my first pet after I graduated college and lived on my own. He lived to be about 6 or 7, and traveled with me from Texas to California to Florida when I was in the Air Force. I loved how he would great me with a chorus of squeaks when I got home from work and he wanted his lettuce and carrot, and then anytime I opened the frig. About two years later we adopted a French Angora rabbit and the guinea pig loved him...would follow him around the house and purr like a cat. The rabbit, however, showed no interest...it was so sad 'cause the piggy just wanted a friend. Today my hubbie and I have a cat...Kitty Girl...an 8-9lb Maine Coon mix with the anti-social behavior of a 200 lb puma! I hope you get a sweet kitty!

talking about the squeaking brings back fond memories! i remember i went on my honeymoon and left Monty with my parents. I phoned them up and all i could hear in the background was squeaking. I asked why he was being so loud, my mum said she had been feeding him HALF A CUCUMBER every day as she thought he was hungry when he squeaked! Half a cucumber a day...poor little piggy must have been a bit bloated.
Our kitty is quite a piece of work! Our neighbor's daughter, who is a pint-sized, tough as nails, 20-something year old, loves our cat. She loves that she's little, but sassy. I wouldn't mind if she was a bit less sassy. We use a quote from "Heartbreak Ridge" to describe her. She is much like Gunny Highway...she has no social graces!

Last Night noticed shaggy has a growth, a mole maybe right under his left eye, about dime size, doesn't seem to bother him, but I want to get it checked out. Guess they were busy when I called, so they said they would call me back to schedule an appt. My pooooor baby, I worry so much about him.
Then I have to go to the YMCA I promised I would go swimming for an Hour today, even though that pool is heated I know it will be cold. It's 56 degrees today. Tomorrow they deliever our tile and grout. So I will be stuck home but will do my DVD dance workout.

We had an old beagle when I was a kid who had tons of age spots that looked like moles all over him. He lived to be a grouchy 17-year old hound dog. Hopefully it'll be something like that and nothing to worry about. I'll keep you and Shaggy in my prayers.

This is a great thread, love the pics of the pets!! A long time ago I had 2 dogs, brother & sister, that were German Shepard, Queensland Healer, Boxer mix, but they looked like Shepards. I named them Bonnie & Clyde because they would get into trouble alot lol. They were great dogs. I built a fence so that I wouldn't have to keep them chained up but Clyde had other thoughts. After I finished the fence and let them off their chains, he ran around the house and as he came back around the front, he jumped right over the 5ft fence with Bonnie close behind him lol. Bonnie loved when I turned on the hose for them and put the small metal sprinkler on. She would lay over it so that Clyde couldn't get any water lol and then they would play keep away with the hose lol I do miss them as they are both gone now.
Our dogs now are Beagles, Bayley, female will be 4 in Feb, Gallup male will be 2 in July. She is all girl, high pitch voice and prissy at times. He is all boy, very rough and tumble with a very deep voice. She "sat pretty" all by herself, it was the cutiest thing I had ever seen. Gallup because he is all legs took some time for him to be able to do that and when he does he looks like a little butler lol. He reminds us of Odie from Garfield, just a happy go lucky dog. He loves making Bayley chase him so that he can run from her, so gets frustrated and will bark at him.

Gallup in front, Bayley in back. Gallup soon after we got him.

Bayley & Gallup sitting pretty

Keeping an eye on the neighborhood.

My poor baby's eye, Its soft, it's a discoloration of the skin, with nohair.

Mina at 3months, is a little hell cat, she jumps and scratches everyone shaggy lets her know when he has had enough, we have to separate them sometimes, but she just likes to play, can't get her declawed till 6 months. Yesterday she got outside and discovered grass for the first time, took us forever to trap her and get her in, lol. So see this sofa, we aren't getting our new sofas until she is declawed. I have more scratches and bites on my hand, than from when poor tiger (RIP) panic during the hurricane and bit and clawed me.
