Full Version: General Fic & Writing Talk

I thought we should finally have a general fanfic and writing talk thread. A place to post items of interest for fellow writers, get help with plot problems, name ideas, and requests for betas.

To kick off: We're halfway through October which means???

Getting your hands warmed up for NaNoWriMo!!!

NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month. The idea is to take that story idea up in your head and write it out. It's quantity over quality in a race with yourself (or others!) to hit 50,000 words between November 1st and November 30th.

If you want to learn more or sign up, just click on the badge in my sig. smile.gif

Would our fanfic count if it reaches 50,000 words? Or would that run into legal rights stuff, even with disclaimers? Just curious....

Janx, this might be something I'm interested in but I'm 'directionally' challenged sometimes. If I check it out and am not quite sure, can I ask you some questions?
InfinityStar
This thread is a great idea, Janx! Excellent, in fact. Thanks! I like the idea of having a place to come for plot ideas and such. I know that I, for one, love to brainstorm.

I might be interested in NaNoWriMo....if I can find the right idea. I'll let you know. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Since it's not about getting published I don't think there's a problem, but I've never read up on that issue in relation to the challenge. Remember this is a challenge against yourself, to set a goal and reach it, with your creativity. Writing is something that we tend to put off in favor of "more important" things, so this sets aside a block of time to focus on that creative process.

You can ask me anything you like, though I'll probably refer you back to the site for specifics. Providing links if needed. smile.gif

I also want to mention that they do have a LARGE forum for participants to use and it tends to be pretty active leading up to and during November. There are sub-forums for different genres, places where you ask for help with plot, names, or any other block you may have. There are even regional groups that try to have face to face writing get togethers so you can encourage and discuss in person.
jcsavestheday
Perhaps we could have do our own thing here with fic. Since we don't know whether it will count or not. I think that would be great to have a bunch of *long* yet awsome stories out there. Not that I need to take on another writing project, considering that I have two stories in the works right now.
flashymom
Well, as long as it's currently taking me to get each chapter put together, and as slow as my story is progressing, I may reach the 50,000 word mark BEFORE the end of November........
JanxAngel
The idea of NaNoWriMo is quantity over quality. You start with a new idea or at least one you haven't done any real writing on, and starting 11/1 try to pound out 50k words by the end of the month. It doesn't have to be great, it doesn't have to be polished, or perfect, it just has to be 50,000. That's it.

It's a very interesting concept. One I may find myself exploring with a new story idea....hopefully not at the expense of my currently ongoing saga.....we'll see.....My parents will be here on "start day"........

I'm just bumping this up to the front page to help out our newest fanfic author, YRUthewaythatUR. She's got a great story going that's sort of an SVU-crossover in that her OC love-interest for Bobby is Regan Stabler, Elliott Stabler's sister.

Thanks so, so much Flashymom and everyone else who has helped me.

I am looking for people who really know SVU cannon and LOCI. I know LOCI really well, and I know SVU pretty well.

What I really need is some people to run ideas by to make sure I am on the right track.

I have some pretty significant crossover ideas in mind, and one event that I really want to stay true to character.

I don't have a ton of time to search around, so I thought I would see if anyone here could help me. Even if you don't know the info yourself, could you point me to a good forum ( where people might know) so that I could cut my search time?

THANKS to all for the help and especially the inspiration through your feedback and own great stories!

Go to the SVU forums here. They have a large fanfic sub-forum. Maybe someone there could help you.

I'd rather not say what I'm working on, but I'm not working on it alone. Actually we're kinda working on two stories together. One CI one not.
So yea, maybe it'll be better once it's done because it's not all my work. smile.gif
You all know and love this person (no seriously) and I'm not sure if they've ever done any ff you've read thought. blink.gif
Well anyway. We're trying to work on it, but maybe we'll actually get to it once we - they- finsish the first LOCI story that has (Don't look at me! I didn't write it!) gotten me hooked, has got me to lose my breath, and actually anticipating what's going to happen, and wondering what's going to happen. I'd rather you not know what it is. I think because I showed this person one of my stories (don't ask) they just came up with this AMAZING story. So yea, I can influence a good story not made by me. And I'm not trying to take credit, I just infulenced.
Thanks!!

Am I the only one who thinks Bobby and Alex going to school together (Let's just pretend) would be cool?
Admitally watching Dead made this idea appear in my head.
And I've kinda... started it just for fun.
This would be really good story coming from somebody else but me. (Though I think I can make a young Bobby really real like, though me writing it would really sound bad) (You know what I mean)
moark
Can I admit something? I dont' like to read. Sucks for being a writer doesn't it?
Peyton
Yeah, it sucks. Because if you don't read, how can you write?

I dunno... I can read but I don't really get to reading book lately, I just write.
Lisa K
Ah, well that answers a question..... rolleyes.gif

I'm an avid reader and i write. Reading teaches me. I find it helps with spelling, grammar, how to lay out a paragraph etc. If you don't read then how can you learn? I always tell my eight year old daughter that being able to read and enjoying reading opens up the imaginations to lots of new, wonderful experience. She's taken this to heart and reads beautifully (and at an advanced age) and is beginning to write the most beautiful, imaginative little stories.

Exactly what I did when I was eight years old. I grew out of it.
I know how to read. You misunderstood me.
Lisa K
How did i misunderstand you?

I didn't say that you couldn't read...i'm sure that you can and very well too, but if you write fan fiction then it helps to read too...like i said, to learn...how to set out a paragraph, spelling, grammar etc etc. The point i was attempting to make was to say that writers also read. I can imagine that a large majority of fan fic writers hear are also big big readers too.

You also posted a cryptic comment in my fic thread about asking when my fic was set...it's all set out in the author's notes which are in bold, at the start of the fic and explain everything pertaining to the storyline. If you had read that, you wouldn't have posted your question. Then you posted your admission about not reading. You don't read, i get that but i've always believed that to do one you have to do the other.
Jryan
Ok I am working on a story, I am trying to keep it rated enough to post here, but might have to put some of it on fan fic. I am not ready for it to be read yet. But I need someone who wouldn't have a problem with R rated material when I am done. To beta it for me.
ciaddict
I'm glad you bumped this up, JRyan. I'll give some thought to beta'ing your story. I like reading "those kind" of stories, but I'm not sure I'd be very good at beta'ing them. I know I'm no good at writing them. Maybe someone who is better at writing them will offer to beta for you.

Meanwhile, Flashymom urged me to post this here. We thought everyone would get a kick out of it, since it is a cop show we are all addicted to. I found this in the October 2008 issue of Writer's Digest magazine (excellent magazine, BTW).

Miranda Rights for Writers’ Subjects

October 20, 2008
by Cindy Adams

Sure, in the writer’s mind, everyone’s fair game for material. But just like run-ins with the law, all suspects—even those popping up in your fiction and memoirs—deserve a fair reading of their rights. So stash these Miranda Rights for Writers’ Subjects in your pocket for the next family reunion where Uncle Bo’s poor table manners generate enough material for a memoir or two. As WD forum member Cindy Adams (aka “Gooblink”) warned before posting the following manifesto online, everything you say can—and will—be used.

1. You have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions. Do you understand that I will make stuff up, with or without your input?

2. Anything you do say may be used in my next project. Do you understand that my opinion of you will affect how others perceive you?

3. You have the right to consult an attorney … now or in the future. Do you understand that if you seek legal action you will be, in effect, admitting you’re guilty of the actions and/or behavior of said character?

4. If you can’t afford an attorney, tough. Do you understand that I’m counting on it?

5. If you decide to answer questions, or otherwise continue our relationship, you’ll still have the right to stop answering questions at any time. Do you understand that I’ll still make stuff up?

6. Knowing and understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you still willing to be my friend?

Well dang Someone has it out for me and my Fan Fic Witness Protection, I rated it R, it got deleted, then I just posted a link to it on Fan Fiction.net and that got deleted. Oh well if you want to read it go find it on fanfiction.net under CI written by Jryanragincajun, until this post gets deleted.

Ok, here it goes, I don't know if anyone can help me, I was reading a fan fic a while back. I don't know who wrote it, I don't know if it ever got finished. Life gets in the way. But It started off with Bobby in the Army, meeting a girl, she got pregnant she moved back to the states, time moved on like 20 yrs. Bobby is called on a case where a woman is murdered, turns out it's his son's wife. But he doesn't know it. What was the story and did it ever get finished, when I stopped reading it, Eames was suspicious, but Bobby didn't meet the woman from his past yet.

That is Flashymom's story, It Always Comes Back. She did finish it and is now writing the sequel, But Will It Stay? They are both posted here, on the LOCIModerated board, and at ff.net. Good stories!

Does any shippers want to help me write a story?

It's really hard to explain without telling you why I probably won't suck as hard as before.

PM me if anybody's intrested.

Haha I have a weirder story that bobby meets his biological kid in. I mean IT'S WEIRD.

It's ironic too.

Okay I was googling ripped fabric because I was bored. (I am surprised how often i talk about the story, but NEVER use it's name. Lol)

And I found this....

http://www.cracked.com/article_16554_5-mos...fanfiction.html

This has NOTHING to do with my story, so nothing to worry.

I've got to say. IT'S FREAKY.

Thank you.
