Tomorrow is going to be amazing. The preview really tells us nothing, but I'm cracking up because...well that's just what James and Dulé do to me. Adding the outrageous clothing to the mix, yeah I'm rolling.

I hope they show the Psych office too. They've only shown it once or twice this season. I love the outfits James and Dulé are wearing. I've watched the commercials for this episode so many times and each time I get more excited.

This episode just seems so psych-y if you know what i mean. In the discription it says that shawn and gus "revisit the seventies" which totally sounds like something they would do. It just seems like this episode might even be better then The Greatest Adventure in the History of Basic Cable. I can't wait!!!!!!

I'm so mad becuase I just found out I might not be home until late tomorrow night so i'll have to tape Monk and Psych and then watch them when I get home which I fully intend to do. I don't care if we get home at 12:00 i'm going to watch them as soon as possible!!!!!

No one's even seen the episode yet, and it already has one of Gus' best lines

"Shut yo mouth!"

OMG! I'm so excited it's on tonight!!! The next 9 hours are going to go by very slowly I just know it!!!

I too hope it's a good one. I need a real laugh out loud episode, hope this one's like that. I love all the episodes though.
DeepPoet117
Wow. This is turning out to be a great episode and it's barely started! Shawn's posing for the picture had me cracking up and their grammar argument with the chief was hilarious! I agree completely with Gus about the "could care less" thing. I can't wait to see what else this episode has in store!

Ok, now that the episode is over, I LOVED it. It was an amazing episode. I laughed out loud way more in this episode than any of the others. I loved the things I mentioned above and Henry doing Shawn's wacky names introduction and everything! Great episode! It ties with the Greatest Adventure in the History of Basic Cable in my book.
sarcasmlove
This episode. Was. Amazing! I really really enjoyed it.

I was laughing like none stop tonight.

I loved the Henry/Shawn interaction tonight, especially their little argument that Gus broke up. Despite their continual disagreements they have, I'm glad to see Shawn treating Henry better after his realization with his mom.

Dude! That car! It was hot lol.

Lassie and Jules were mean to Buzz. I didn't like that lol, I love Buzz!

And ew dude, Lassie puked on Jules' hair. I would have roughed him up if he did that.

Their clothes tonight...wow, those were some pretty busy threads if I don't say so myself. I dunno about you guys, but I thought James, Corbin and Dulé all pulled it off pretty well tongue.gif

Yeah, this episode was good. I enjoyed seeing Henry and Shawn working together and plus with that added emotion because of Henry's history with it...it made the father/son dynamic even more compelling and special.

Loved the Ode to Shaft! LOL! News Radio (with Phil Hartman) did a great send-up of it, too, years ago.

Watched the eppy twice and still didn't spot the pineapple, though. I guess I'll have to watch it again!

This was a really fun episode. I'd say it's my favorite of the season, but that spot still goes to "The Greatest Adventure in the History of Basic Cable." Still, this one had enough fun parts to it to make it a worthy competitor to a lot of the classics. There's also the fact that it was kinda like the framework I came up with for an episode awhile back.

My favorite parts were:

- Gus correcting the chief when she said "I could care less." Man, it drives me up the wall when people say that, and people say it all the time without realizing that "could care less" means you actually care in the first place. It was one of those rare moments where I found myself going "YEAH!" at the TV.
- The little Phil Collins Dialogue over the phone.
- The disguises. They were totally unnecessary and only served to cater to the overall 70's theme of the episode, and that's what made them great (though it would be wise if they didn't use the time period/outfit gimmick again for awhile, just so it doesn't cheapen the effect).
- Gus complaining about how his entire left side fell asleep in the car--and as a result, having a funky walk.
- Gus running away from the bomb at the end (I still think he did the smartest thing, the culprits could have easily waited until the timer ran low and then darted at the last few seconds).
- The way Shawn delivers the "Then we'd all be dead" line.

Hmm, once again there are a lot of Gus moments on that list. Dare I say, I think he's starting to outstage Shawn. And am I the only one who felt kinda bad for him at the end? It looked like he was really growing attached to that car, and I found myself Awwwing when it started smoking up. Seems like every time he gets something good, it only gets snatched away from him.
Yeoboseyo
Did anyone else catch Shawn and Gus' reactions when they heard the name of Henry's informant, "Pookie"? It's a funny sounding name itself, admittedly, but I think at least someone on that set knows what that word means in Tagalog/Pilipino, hence the hilarity that ensues. It's not a word you want to repeat in public either... wink.gif

I was rolling on the floor myself!
YllwPadnBlkPen
I really enjoyed this episode and LOVED the "could care less" part -- it's such a pet peeve of mine!

Also, is it just me or did it seem like Shawn was wearing Jules' aviators tonight when he got into his 70's outfit?

USAophile
great ep!

highlights.....

shawn jumping over ( or trying to jump over) the car

shawn posing in the chiefs office

shawn and gus' reaction when they heard the guys name ( pookie?)

Gus running away at the end

the whole vision in the dead guys lab

and much more!

Some of the things I loved in this episode are that they are finally working a case for the department, they hung out at the psych office and Henry got to notice things that same was shawn did. It was very interesting and then when he figured out they made another bomb and was trying to tell shawn the whole thing was hilarious. I also loved that they referenced Indiana Jones and National Treasure which are two of my favorite action movies!!

Can't wait ill next week episode!!! The only thing sad about friday nights is knowing you have to wait another week to see the next episode! And I have to watch it on saturday because I have to go to my freshmen lock-in on friday! URG! I hate being busy on friday nights!

Pretty good episode. I got a little distracted the first time through but found myself liking it upon re-watch. I especially loved Gus' line, "You know I'm afraid that being wrongfully convicted is the tragic way my story ends." I'm really glad to see that "could care less" is a pet peeve of so many other people. Chief Vick absolutely needed to be called out on that! Anytime that Gus mentions grammar makes me happy. Hmm, like tixus, I'm finding more and more great Gus moments; my affection for him might surpass my affection for Shawn pretty soon. And I also felt bad that the car broke down at the end. Poor hitchhiking Gus. You can ride with me.

Watched the eppy twice and still didn't spot the pineapple, though. I guess I'll have to watch it again!

There was one pineapple in front of the window that's behind Melanie when she's chopping the cucumber. There was also one supposedly in a lamp somewhere, but I missed that one!

The Gus walk as they went into the 70's club is what killed me. Hilarious. One of the best laugh-out-loud moments I've see on tv in a long time.

Sometimes I think this show is wasted on anyone not old enough to catch the references. In addition to all the other comments, I also really enjoyed the hubcap coming off the during the car chase. Always happened in the 70's. Also the music they used. Authentically bad. My favorite jab was using the acronym SAG for the terrorist group. Snarky. I couldn't place one homage. When the car breaks down on Gus at the end so he has to get out and hitchhike. What movie is that from?
silly_pants_jackson
Loved this episode!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many of the previous posters have mentioned some of my favorite scenes, but I wanted to add:

When Shawn, Gus, and Henry were leaving the Psych office and Shawn suggests that they should ride his motorcycle. He says that he has been wanting to try "threesies". Then, he says, "Who is taking the handlebars? Gus it FEELS like you." laugh.gif

My other favorite surprise about this episode was "Isaac the bartender" from THE LOVE BOAT as Pookie. Perfect choice. cool.gif

This was exactly the same for me too! I always get distractions if I try to watch the first showing, cause my kids will interupt me (which is fine but you know what I mean). With this show you can't be interupted because you turn your head away for 3 seconds and you could miss a ton!! I really liked it a lot better when I re-watched it. The humor between the 3 guys was great.

I totally agree!! I am 40 so I grew up watching some of those great detective shows with the classic car chases. Even though they seem a bit cheesy now, you just don't get shows like that nowadays, so it was really cool to see them do a chase scene. The hubcap scene was classic!!! Not sure about the ending, it does seem like a movie though.

That walk was hysterical!! He said something like "I can't feel my whole left side". I think the scenes with the car were fantastic. Gus getting to drive it was great, the fact that the car was in rotten condition and practically impossible to drive was hilarious. The scene when Gus pulled into that parking lot and the car swerved to a stop, Shawn gets out almost sick and Gus does the walk. LOVED IT!!!

Did any one notice Lasseter's nose at the police station when they were discussing the Marmoset cargo container?
He had a marmoset nose, and when the camera panned behind him, he took it off!
Hilarious!

Possibly the best ep this season!

I had to watch it again to find the second pineapple. (The first was the base of the lamp when "younger" Henry Spencer and SB police burst through the door at the very beginning of the ep.)

I loved Gus' replies to Shawn's partial wrap-up in the laboratory. "WOOOOO, Make a Wish!" biggrin.gif

It felt more like a Starsky & Hutch episode... from the car to hub caps coming off in the car chase, to the guys 'shaking down' the informant (This time it's Pookie instead of Huggy Bear).... Groovy, man! cool.gif

Oh, I almost forgot! "LIES, LIES, LIES... yeah" nice reference to an 80's Thomspon Twins song of the same name.
Vyen
I'm only 21, so as someone posted above, maybe I didn't catch all of the jokes, references, and such. I still thought this episode was hilarious...and something that -didn't- go over my young whippersnapper head was Shawn's shirt.

It is awesome. I have to have one...preferably, not for the price they probably paid for it (I don't wanna know what Psych's wardrobe budget is XD). Anyone know where I can get a shirt like that? It was supa-fly.

Seriously...I want one. He made that thing look -good-. XD

Edit: I mispelled Shawn. lol.

Man, I stared at that lamp for, like, ten minutes. It just doesn't look like a pineapple to me. It looks more like a bunch of grapes or something! But you're probably right.

Ok, that eppie was hilarious!!!

So many great moments: Shawn trying to slide over the car, Shawn's box with shiny things (LMAO), the 70's lingo, "Gus would have lived!", etc.

I really liked Jules and Lassie in this one! Normally, she kinda annoys me, but they were amazing. They pwned.

My only problem (and it's so tiny that it isn't really a problem) was that Gus drove the car in the chase scene. I thought that it should've been Shawn. After all, his hidden talent is anti-terrorist driving! Even though Dulé was amazingly kick*** doing it.

I have to know... Was I the only one who caught Gus's look when Pookie said, "I once got shot over a white girl like that,"? Was it just me, or did he kinda have a "I know what you're saying" expression on his face??? I watched it twice, and both times I noticed it. There's a shot of Gus making said face, and then one of Shawn furrowing his eyebrows at him before going back to listening to Pookie. It was HILARIOUS!!! You know, in a kinda racist way... I just want to know if I'm crazy. It doesn't seem like something that would be in Psych, if you know what I mean. I'm totally not complaining, though. It was just soooooooooo funny.
Galadriel22
I loved this episode and its homage to the events of the seventies. So often I thought, "Yes, I remember that!." It simply put a smile on my face. I also loved the not so subtle dig at SAG.

I also want to compliment the producers on the guest casting. Having Jere Burns and Ted Lange guest starring in an episode about the 70's was perfect.

Keep up the good work, USA. Unlike most other networks, your programming executives show great taste and an appreciation that there is an audience for good, scripted shows that engage the brain, the heart, and the funny bone.
nannyjo03
I **LOVED** the episode - It was hysterical and had a LOT of great lines.

I am still confused about one thing, though: Why did the woman pretend to cut her hand? I know that is was important at the end when Shawn knew she was lying but why did she do it in the first place?

What did I miss... and why did she need to "run off?"

I think it was an attempt on her part to break up the question and answer session that was going on. Or maybe she just didn't want to answer any questions so she faked the injury to remove herself from the situation. Either way, it worked. Shawn and Gus wrapped up their visit right after she did it.
Bruton_Gaster
Being a fan of 70's movies, TV and music, I knew I would love this episode just a few seconds in. That opening music was simply awesome! Reminded me of stuff like SWAT and Starsky and Hutch. With this fifth episode, and the fact that it completely rocks, finally breaks the odd numbered curse I was convinced the show was having for this season.

The show had a solid plot, peppered with great dialogue and lots of hysterical moments. This what I love about Psych, and this is what I think to be the ideal Psych episode. Even the B story with Lassiter and Juliet was quite hysterical.

First off, the music was just awesome. I love how they infused the regular Psych incidental music with 70's riffs. They didn't use well known 70's songs, but the music seemed 70's enough to be convincing.

Oh yeah, I love the new opening credits! Lots of new scenes included and is it my imagination or is this opening credit sequence longer than previous ones?

The clothes: once again, AWESOME. That flashback scene on the steps of the police station... look at the detectives on the right. Wow, straight out of a 70's movie. The hair, the mustaches, the clothes, the look of them overall.... incredible. It made me hanker for some cool 70's movies just about now. Serpico? Dog Day Afternoon? Shaft? Death Wish? Let's go!

I really like it that Henry is being involved in the story more and more, just like in previous episode. I like it that he's not just a person that Shawn calls when he needs some tools or some help. It is in this episode where you can see that Henry can do what Shawn does, and probably does it better, only without the psychic mannerisms and persona. And cool!! HENRY VISION! I just love Corbin's face when he grimaces during his Henry Vision moments. It cracks me up!

More Henry does seem to mean slightly less Gus because Gus does a lot of silent nodding and pointing in this episode. Even in the Psychouts Dulé voices it out: “I don't have any lines because Saladin K. Patterson didn't give me any.”

But Gus does have his moments. He voices out what some people on the boards have been saying about being tired of the Henry-Shawn drama: “Enough! I'm sick and tired of you two fighting all the time!”. A great moment for Gus. He even steps up a bit in the banter between Shawn and the Chief, something I don't remember Gus doing before. I love that exchange right at the beginning where the Chief was making threats and all the two would do was correct her grammar. That was so funny.

“SAG was RUTHLESS. Nobody dared cross them. Not even one of their own!” Now there MUST be a writer's in-joke in here somewhere, but I won't go there. he.he.

The Diamond smuggling ring/fraudulent permits at a plastics factory B Story. I loved this one! Funniest B story yet! But here we see something new: We've always seen how Juliet and Lassiter's maturity levels plunge in the presence of cool police gadgetry (Zero to Murder in 60 Seconds). But this is the first time we see how mean and scheming they can be. Poor Buzz McNab! Not surprisingly, Saladin K. Patterson wrote both these episodes and he seems to revel in writing fun material for Juliet and Lassiter. Which is great, for the most part.

In the end where they take the credit for Shawn's solving the case, it was funny, but was also quite disturbing. Although Juliet and Lassiter do get their comeuppance... twice, does this indicate a change of direction in how these characters are handled? I couldn't for the life of me, accept that Juliet could do something like that to Shawn, after everything he's done. It's somehow inconsistent with how the characters were previously handled, specially Lassiter who refused to take credit for something that Shawn did in one of the season one episodes.

The pawnshop scene: I was waiting for a Ben Kingsley gag that never came. Come on guys... the pawnshop guy is a spitting image of Ben Kingsley! If the writers can make gags about Ed Harris (Spellingg Bee) and Phil Collins (this episode) lookalikes, this one should have been irresistible. James? Didn't occur to you? Saladin? No? Oh well...

Ok, some moments that made me laugh so hysterically our dogs barked:

Shawn mugging for the camera.

Shawn, trying to spin a page 64 story into a front page story: “Really depends on how you fold it, doesn't it?”

“Goes without saying.”, “I could care less”.

Shawn: “And unless you plan on going back to the academy, and climbing the high wall, and doing the obstacle course, where you shoot the bad guys but not the old lady with the sack or the blind guy with a cane with a cute little squirrel with a bush tail and a big fat nut...” Ha! Ha! This is hysterical. Amazing that James pulled it off so flawlessly. I wonder how many takes this took?

Shawn attempting to jump the hood of the car. Oh my God. Ha! Ha!

“Pooky”. Now why did Gus and Shawn find this funny? Because it's such a wimpy name for a snitch? Most probably. But to Filipinos, this would be EXTRA funny because in Tagalog, “Pooky” with a slightly different spelling, means the female reproductive organ.

Gus completely embracing the 70's riff. His walk from the car to the 70's club was just hysterical. (I'm getting tired of using the word now, but there's really no other way to describe it.)

Shawn, Gus and Henry putting down their shades at the same time in Dr. Colbert's lab, and the pre wrap up that followed with Juliet and Lassiter in the lab.

All in all, a terrific, and extremely funny episode. If I didn't know better, this show has become full on comedy. And it's great! Congrats to Saladin K. Patterson for writing this one because it's a winner! If I can make a small, small, teeny tiny, itty bitty, almost microscopic, probably nearly inconsequential suggestion to Mr. Patterson... I hope that when you do your commentary to this episode for the Season 3 DVD, please speak up a bit. Your commentary for “Zero to Murder in Sixty Seconds” was almost unintelligible to me because you like to mumble and whisper. I'm sorry, but yours was the only commentary in the entire 2nd season DVD set that I was unable to finish. I just couldn't understand it. Come on, allow us to share in your thoughts about creating this terrific episode. Very well done!!

Props to Mel Damsky for directing it! And everyone else, and the actors of course... great job all around!

I think this was a reference to Dulé Hill's character in 'West Wing', Charlie Young. In a cliffhanger episode in that series an assassin targets the group of West Wingers. It is disclosed in the next season that the gunman was angry with Dulé's character for dating the daughter of the president, who is white.
bigkitty_4
OMG, the Phil Collins reference was awesome! I laughed when Shawn went: "How does she know that Phil Collins lives in Switzerland?" laugh.gif Shawn's attempt to slide across the car was very funny! It reminded me of the show that later was made into a movie that James was in: Dukes of Hazzards. I was laughing when Gus said "Make a wish" in the lab and then he said: "What?" laugh.gif And Henry giving Gus and himself the fake partner names, that was hilarious. Correcting the chief on her bad grammar and she said: "You realize I have a gun." laugh.gif The Henry vision in this episode was great and reinforces how he trained Shawn to notice details to become a cop like him even though Shawn uses his 'gift' as being psychic. Or how disappointed Henry felt when he missed the partners thirty years ago and Shawn wanted to prove to his dad that he was and still is a good cop. But the biggest awww moment is when Henry thanked Shawn in the end, that was sweet.

With the many problems with the Mercury Cougar, it was funny how it broke down, leaving poor Gus truly disgusted. Remember it was his money (Henry just put in fifty dollars in it.) on this car. It was Gus who told both Shawn and Henry that they needed each other and to stop bickering: that was awesome! And "Pookie"? laugh.gif What grown man, who is informant, has that as their name?

And poor Buzz, he didn't realize he was being used by Lassiter and Juliet. Buzz still came out looking smarter than them when nothing and do say nothing bad happened to him but they had to get the rabies shot for the first case they took and then later being confined in a small room by the Coast Guard and Lassie puking on poor Jules. So there! Ha!

All in all, a great episode, which makes next week episode even more interesting because does include the Coast Guard and Chief Vick's sister.
maxqnz
This was a great episode. Fun, witty lines, an intersting main story and a fun mini arc with Jules and Lassie getting what they deserved, plus the S.A.G. gag was hilarious.

"Pookie" wsa funny to Shawn and Gus because Henry just said it like it was a normal thing, and when they asked further, he doesn't know why that's a funny name. (It is kinda funny IMO, and Shawn and Gus' reaction made it hilarious). Also, it shows the generation gap between Shawn and his dad, where back in the day, Pookie wasn't weird at all.

I loved the episode, but hated the B story with Jules and Lassiter. I thought they were so mean.

I felt so bad for Buzz. He should have more screen time!
