Full Version: Monk bad guys you can't help but have a soft spot for

Monk's had some great villains over the past 7 seasons so it got me thinking about the ones that have made an impression on me. A couple of characters that I had a soft spot for were...

Hal from 'Mr. Monk Makes a Friend' - I know he's a killer ( smile.gif ), but he just seemed so nice and accepting of Monk and it was touching to see how happy Adrian was to have a new friend. The scene where they wore those ridiculous construction hats to protect themselves at the game was very funny. Okay, so he turned out to be a complete rat-bag, but it was cute to see Adrian giddy with happiness.

Jimmy, the killer from 'Mr. Monk Visits a Farm' - I just LOVE that look he gives at the end during the summation when he realises that Monk is letting Randy take most of the credit for solving the case. He could have denied Randy his moment, but he didn't. As killers go, that was pretty good of him, plus the actor Ricardo Chavira was really working those jeans.

There are more Monk bad guys who have stood out for me, either for the character or for the way the actor has portrayed him/her, but I thought I'd share my initial musings on these two in particular.

Just some thoughts!

I say, Patrick Kloster from last week's episode was one of my favorite villains. A very well performed character. He looks a bit modest and shy but at the same time - a true mastermind of evil.
"Mr. Monk goes to the Asylum" - this doc was great too! Again, something similar to "Mr. Monk and the genius" a bit modest, a bit shy... but! Maybe I liked them so much, because their characters were more expanded than others.

Also from "Mr. Monk is at your service" this evil neighbor was funny to watch. I was never familiar with Sean Astin before and I enjoyed his performance here. Although he didn't look evil at all..

"Mr. Monk takes a vacation" these cleaning ladies were hilarious. You know, simple chambermaids, just doing their job... you could never guess that they are conspirated evil geniuses... like evil elves or something...
Chacal
Ah and I must add - the handyman from "Mr. Monk buys a house"!
"Adrian, I'm a surgeon! Just gonna be like taking out an apendix- a little incision, snip snip snip..."
Funniest of all villains, I say! So I came to new conclusion - season7 - season of villains!

The Doc from the 'Asylum' episode has to be one of my favorites too.

The funniest villain for me, was the fake Russian art dealer in the 'Masterpiece' episode - how they kept straight faces filming those scenes is beyond me, bet there are some great bloopers for that episode.

Yes! Overall it was an episode that I laughed so hard, but that's another thread I guess. Hey, I hope we'll have a chance to hear those bloopers from you! wink.gif

Yes, the blind woman, who wasn´t blind any more. She was an avenger. Her reason was easy to accept, easy to forgive her.

The actor, who played the murderer in the Hospital, was Bulldog from Frasier. I can´t help, but I remembered him as Bulldog and it was confusing... And then I liked Monk´s cell mate in Mr Monk Goes to Jail. He was very cool, and he saved Adrian´s life. He wasn´t the murderer in the episode, but he was a bad guy anyway, a criminal and murderer.

I liked also the actor in The Genius, Patrick Kloster.

The doc from the Asylum, I didn´t like so much. He is smart, manipulative, power-hungry, a very dangerous type, specially in his profession. He learns people´s secret and weak points and doesn´t hesitate to use them against these people, if he gets some advantage from that. And he tried to make Adrian really crazy. I can´t forgive such a thing. It was a crime against humanity.

Patrick Kloster--only because David Strathairn is my boyfriend and I know he'd never do anything like that. biggrin.gif And Frank Prager from Secret Santa. He was a suspect and didn't end up being the killer--he took some shots at (or near, rather) Stottlemeyer but he's just so adorable, I have to throw him in here. Pseudo-bad guy--I still get night sweats over that character!

You know, I felt sorry for the group of people at the B&B who were splitting the cash after the bad guy had a heart attack. They were regular people who were going to get a windfall without actually hurting anyone (but Adrian, of course).

Oooooo, they were horrible people, messing with Adrian's head like that. I may be a teeny-tiny bit forgiving of the lady that ran the hotel as Adrian had messed up her murder mystery night on a previous visit but still, putting a dead body in a barrel of wine is just not good manners, especially one covered in Aqua Velva. smile.gif

I loved the cleaning lady who ends up finding the diamond stuck under the table in the interrogation room! Not really the villain, but LOL outloud worthy!
goodbyegirl
That lady almost deserved the winnings after Monk gave her such a hard time about cleaning in a particular way!

I liked the teacher-killer from 'Mr. Monk Goes Back to School' because it was such a clever murder, and it's for this reason that I have a soft spot for the killer-in-a-coma guy in 'Mr. Monk and the Sleeping Suspect' as he was just so smart. Though I'm sure I read somewhere that US mail hasn't allowed parcels tied with string since the 90s as they get caught in the production machinery, but still, I liked the way the whole mystery evolved.

The only reason I liked the Captain's killer-girlfriend, Linda, is that once she was exposed, that would be the end of that relationship! I just never bought the two of them together, good storyline though, to show the more vulnerable side of Stottlemeyer

Oh the cleaning lady was waaay way too evil. Honestly, she was a bad guy. She never cleaned under the table (except her one lucky time)! A demon seed!

I've got a soft spot for Julian the evil fashion designer; he's evil with STYLE. Sure, he's a violent, abusive, manipulative, lying fiend who should count himself quite lucky Natalie didn't break his neck with her bare hands for setting his sights on her daughter, but he's just got that flair for the grand, that flamboyant charm that somehow draws you in even when you know he's a psychopath. I wish we could have listened in on his comments when he saw the prison uniform he'd be wearing for the rest of his failed, useless life; it probably would have been priceless.

And also Vegas's Daniel Thorne, so grand and pompous in his bloated lifestyle that you can't help envy the material wealth he's got (compared to the likes of Dale the Whale and Dexter Gold, whose riches we very clearly would not want given they come from wholly illicit sources). It does seem a little disappointing that he's thrown it all away (providing he didn't have friends in the DA's office that would either get the charges dropped or the sentence reduced) because he forgot marriage is supposed to be forever.

I loved the three cleaning ladies! That was a funny ep!

I am a big fan of Gordon Clapp, who was Francis Merrigan in "New Shrink". I hated that he turned out to be the bad guy, because I loved him on NYPD Blue as Det. Greg Medavoy! So, I kind of have a soft spot for him! smile.gif

Hmm... "boyfriend"? biggrin.gif So is he your boyfriend like Harry Connick Jr is mine? tongue.gif

Another person that was hard to picture as a bad guy is Steven Webber from Wings! I never really watched Wings that much, but come on! And you have to admit, DJ shock jock Max Hudson is kinda cute! Although, I did want to reach through the TV and kill him myself when he started talking about Trudy the way he did!

Here's one I thought of while drifting off last night...Not really a character, but soooo bad for Adrian. The medication which turns him into "The Monk". First, the evil of temptation...Eve and the apple, making yourself sit in the lap of a fat, hairy man in wierd clothes just to get that coveted Christmas toy...just take this little pill, you'll feel better...
Second, it robs him of his gift along with his curse, then leaves him very aware of that fact (sniff, sniff) Trudy "leaves" him.(Bigger sniff sniff) and finally, it's a bad medical script error! Mr. Monk has OCD. The medication turns him into a bipolar patient in acute manic phase. Thats like a med turning my hypertension into diabetes!! C'mon. Stanley made such a great Dr. Kroger not only with his acting skill, but with a very appropriately written script for his role.

Yes! I sympathized with them, too. Which episode is it? They go on a vacation at a big hotel and Sharona plays tennis. That's all I remember.

Season 1's Mr. Monk Takes a Vacation.

This is a really interesting thread, I can't really think of any bad guys I've ever had a soft spot for. But, maybe the cleaning ladies and I really liked Hal, even after I found he was the bad guy. Andy Richter is a cool guy.

I must be in the minority, because I didn't like the cleaning lady team of killers - too sinister!

Now, whilst I think Dale the Whale is pure evil, I do love an episode when he appears as you know we're going to find out a tiny bit more about what happened to Trudy. He has just got to be behind it all but I'm happy to wait as long as possible as when Trudy's murder is solved, it will be the end of the show (unless Andy Breckman changes his mind!)

I did feel sort of sorry for:

Dr. Chistian Vezza (Juan Chioran) in "Dale the Whale" who was blackmailed into killing Judge Lavinio and cheerfully agreed to testify against the fat man.

Kathy Willowby (Faith Prince) in "Cabin Fever". Her husband seemed like a real jerk who sort of had it coming.

Cameron/Fake Trudy (Melora Hardin) in "Mrs. Monk". She didn't mean to kill Zach Ellinghouse and it was really sad when she died.

Alice Westergren (Rachael Harris) in "Secret Santa". Not that she was remorseful or anything, but except for the murder part she seemed sweet. She gave Adrian a very thoughful gift.

Jack Leverett (Greg Grunberg) "Actor". the first killing was really sort of by accident and the second wasn't premeditated either. He wasn't a careful planner like most Monk killers. When he was being held hostage by David Rusk dressed as Monk he was so confused I couldn't help feeling sorry for him.

Cousin Joey (David Koechner) in "Daredevil". He actually didn't kill anybody, besides I think even Monk sympathized with his attempts to kill Harold. I know I did.

Jacob Posner (J.P. Manoux) "Up All Night". He did get ripped off and conned by his drug dealer. If you mess with a guy like that it's not unreasonable that he'll try to kill you.

I did not feel the least bit sorry for Wendy Mass (Jackie Richardson) in "Red Headed Stranger". Maybe Sonny Cross deserved it, but she deliberately fingered Willie Nelson in that line up and then later tried to act like it wasn't her fault that he'd been accused of murder.

Oooooo, good list...

I was never quite sure what her motive was, but I thought she was pretty miserable - I didn't pick up on her soon-to-be-deceased husband being a jerk, but he did have a cute hat, how could she have even wanted to kill him?

QUOTE

I must have been half asleep when I first watched this, as I didn't realise it was Melora in a bad wig - but then I have only recently become aware that Ted is wearing a rug! Agree, she got mixed up in something bigger than she realised - so sad when she died in Adrian's arms.

QUOTE

I felt a bit sorry for her, being scorned by her married lover. Besides, she baked cookies and wrapped up tricky-shaped presents really nicely and anyone who can do that can't be all bad.

He only gets my sympathy as the twin-Monk hostage situation would have sent any inexperienced murderer a little bit do lally

I will defend Harold to the end, but for the sight that must have greeted cousin Joey when he got Harold into that green Lycra, I would have let him off

I kind of liked her, rare to have a killer on Monk with a sympathetic motive but I would have definitely arrested her for crimes against hairdressing - every time I watch that episode I'm distracted by her hairstyle
