How exciting. Friday and a new Monk episode.

On a sad note, I just asked my co-worker of he liked Monk. He said he thought it was alright but he dislikes the supporting characters. They are wheeling him out to the ambulance now. ;-)

Genius inside Monk

Spoiler:
Monk fans are well aware that fear is no obstacle to becoming an established genius. Adrian Monk might not know it, but there are others who are vying for the same title of genius as well. Airing tonight on the USA Network is the second episode of Monk's seventh season, entitled “Mr. Monk and the Genius.”

In tongith's installment, the brilliant detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is set to go up against a chess genius, a character fashioned after Bobby Fisher. This man seems to be trying Monk's patience, even being two steps ahead of our gifted protagonist. However, what this chess master doesn't know is that Monk suspects him of killing Trudy, his wife. The two also match wits against one another in a dirty game of chess.

Guest-starring on the episode is Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn, who has also acquired guest spots on other acclaimed television series. He has been in The Sopranos, Spenser: For Hire and Miami Vice. Strathairn will be playing Patrick Kloster, the chess master and the episode's antagonist.

Tonight's installment of Monk was preceded by the season premiere “Mr. Monk Buys a House.” We followed Monk as he decided to move away because his new neighbor plays music too loudly. He tried to distract himself by looking for a case to solve at headquarters, just to be rid of the noise. His huge step of leaving his home didn't come without a price, as the house he moves in turns into a money pit. Worse is that a handyman he hired becomes determined to rip up the place to earn more cash.

The seventh season of the Emmy Award-winning series Monk has been set to have sixteen episodes. Audiences might just get to see the intelligence of Adrian Monk tested, when he gets outsmarted in “Mr. Monk and the Genius” premiering tonight, 9pm on the USA Network, with a replay at midnight.

That was the best episode they've ever filmed and written since the series began! After everyone pokes holes in it, it'll still be the best episode they've ever filmed and written since the series began. I'm floored.

Spoiler:
This is really awful, but when I heard about her saying he told her he'd kill her as they went to bed, was "Good night Wesley, I'll likely kill you in the morning." I even paused it to say that out loud. No one got it. My poor, ignorant family. biggrin.gif

Good episode. I miss the summations like crazy though.

I really actually thought this episode would be boring. But it so wasn't! It was great! I bet all the Monk/Natalie shippers liked it, too! wink.gif

Is it just me or does anyone else notice that so far this season, Monk is a bit more bold and not quite as socially awkward. I don't know, just something about him this season seems...different.

"We should kiss." That was awesome!

This was an awesome episode --

Mystery -- top notch. I loved all the twists and turns. The final twist with the switched tombstones was reasonable, but not easily predicted. Genius.

Drama -- Lots of emotions in this episode. Monk feeling like he failed the victim, the challenge between the genius and Monk, and the interaction between Stottlemeyer and Monk ('don't break my heart' -- I loved it)

Comedy -- what was there was funny. I loved the bit with the coffee cup, and Disher making the captain put it down before he said anything. I loved the bit with the lemonade and Monk waiting to see if something was going to happen with Natalie. The "we should kiss" comment was hysterical -- except that I wished they would have -- but that's just me. And I loved the fact that when it was all over, and Monk outsmarted the genius -- that Natalie outsmarted Monk. LOL

Lighting and music -- don't really comment on this usually --- but it was awesome.

And very well written.

That was a great episode. It reminded me of some of the really good mysteries from the first season. I loved this one. A good thinker episode. I have to say, though, that my favorite part was: "We should kiss!!" Wow. That one caught me by surprise. smile.gif

I can't get over how good this episode is. This is an emmy winner. Running out of ideas? Not by a long shot. And as a side note, as I always do, Tony is looking sooooooooooooo much better this season. When you get a prime cut of steak, the last thing you do is douse it with steak sauce. They're messing with his appearance less this year and I love it! I can see they're developing the character a bit too--I'd slow it down just a little but I'll adjust to it, regardless. They're developing this character inside and out. Oh yeah, ten years, at least.

And I think they threw that "we should kiss" in there to tease us. Get ready--more teasing is sure to come this season. biggrin.gif

You know, it really wouldn't have hurt them at all to give us a Monk/Natalie kiss here. It would not have been a romantic one -- they could have stepped back from it without changing a thing -- arrggh -- I hope we at least get one before the series is over.

But I kind of like the teasing -- LOL

BfloGal - Yes! Yes! And, Yes! I loved your post because you said it all. LOL The only thing I would add is when Monk goes to the home to plant evidence and I'm yelling: NO, please don't do that! You know this is wrong. You're no cheat. And, then Monk......doesn't........ahhhhh, LOVE you, Monk. smile.gif
Have to agree with all the comments. And, it did affect me when Stottlemeyer says: Don't break my heart - What a great moment. And the almost kiss- ROFL!!! The writers love us. I think they did this just for us. I was laughing so hard during the lemonade scene. And the acting........beyond superb.
BfloGal
I almost forgot -- the scene with the two older women and Monk is going on explaining about the autopsy -- ROFL!

Just a little fluid from the eyeball. laugh.gif

Tony`s hair didn`t look so black tonight, he is a prime cut of steak!
LIMAMA1956
My thoughts: it was better than last week's eppy, thank God. It had to be. David Straithairn was great and the chemistry between him and TS was fantastic. I thought the first half hour held up...but not the second half hour. It almost felt as if it was written by different people.

Spoiler:
Were there big logic holes? IMO, yes. Didn't buy that on the SAME DAY the victim goes to see Monk, she winds up dead. Didn't buy that the husband would be allowed to cremate his wife so quickly while under suspicion of murder...and if the police had learned of his plans to cremate, they would get a court order to stop it. When the ME gave his report, they wouldn't do it that way in real life. I didn't believe for a minute that Monk would plant evidence, and the "switching of the headstones", again, nah.

And once again, the entire plot hinged on the killer WAITING for Monk to do something. What if Monk hadn't decided to break into the house and see the platter with the first wife's name on it? Then what? And the chess game....awfully contrived.

Was it more entertaining than last week's eppy? YES YES YES, by a country mile. For me, still not the best MONK...but certainly a big step in the right direction. What a relief. And that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Yes, it's a shade lighter in both episodes. Perhaps they put the bottles back on the shelf? Didn't want to say, lest I be the only one who thought so--maybe I was projecting more onto it than what was actually there but if others noticed as well.... biggrin.gif Perhaps they're going to let his natural hair color come through. He was beginning to look like Michael Jackson to me. lol. I do know they're playing with his hairline a lot less. I love what they're doing with both characters--Monk and Stottlemeyer--as far as appearance. They're on-going characters--I'm glad they're letting them both out of the bubble a little bit. smile.gif

This was one of the best episodes they have ever made. It reminds me of earlier seasons when Monk's problems did not overwhelm the dramatic tension. This one was truly first rate!

Absolutely PHENOMENAL episode!!!!! Loved it, loved it, loved it!

The "we should kiss" comment was way out there. It looked like Monk's look to Natalie after she said it was similar in "Bank" episode when he told her "I don't banter."

I'm still not very good at figuring out how the murderer did it, but once I see it, I'm like "okay, I see it now." This episode, I couldn't even venture a guess. After Strathairn said something like the rook and something else switch places, a light bulb came on, but it was so dim. I knew that was the key, but couldn't figure it out.

I loved how Natalie fooled Monk at the end. I did that to my mom one time while in grade school. I got a bad grade on a test and my teacher's rule was the parent had to sign the test to know what is going on. Well, I asked my mom one day if I could have her autograph. She gave it to me, then I traced her autograph onto my test. ohmy.gif Aren't I sneaky? Wait, don't tell her I said that. unsure.gif

Great job, everyone involved with Monk. By the way, I saw in the list of guests on the show in the beginning, there was a "Sarah Shalhoub" then another last name; started with an L. Shalhoub isn't a very common name so I suppose it's a relation to Tony. Does anyone know what relation and who she played?

And looking at the preview to next week, I already can't wait. Monk says to Dr. Bell: "A talking monkey could do her job." Dr. Bell: "You're holding it upside down Adrian. It's supposed to be 91." Ha!!

That was Susan Shalhoub Larkin. She is one of Tony's sisters. She played the housekeeper who discovered that the wife was dead and dropped the tray.

Sarah Shalhoub is Tony Shalhoub's sister and L. Shalhoub... well I'm not sure here... one name which comes to my mind is Lynn but as I know in Shalhoub's family is only Lynn Adams so it is somebody we don't know about yet that we never heard about yet. Maybe Teresa or Bubba or somebody else is going to know more...
I have to wait an hour or a little longer for this episode but I personaly can't wait and reading the posts tells me it's even better episode than premiere's eppy.
jo43
After all these terrific comments I can hardly wait to see this episode!!!! Twenty-two minutes to go here!!!!!
Gol
Tonight's episode was great!!

Like the others have already said, I loved the ending of the show where Natalie tricked Adrian when she asked for his autograph. laugh.gif That was when she had him endorse the back of the check.

I got a text message from a friend tonight that she couldn't believe that Monk would plant the evidence, but his conscience got the best of him.

The writers did a marvelous job of having the grand chess master and Monk play the chess game. It was interesting to see how Monk was able to get the chess master flustered by drawing something out of him where Monk asked him if he was "castling" (sp?). That was where he finally figured it out when he got the clue about switching places as in switching headstones.

Do look forward to next Friday's episode.

So, what was Natalie driving? unsure.gif
ramblinman1957
Tony Shalhoub, your delivery and timing are brilliant. I feel we are watching a comedy legend in the making. Excellent Show! Genius!
AaronD
Better episode than the last. Again Natalie and money as per her being shorted by Monk. I know she save his life in Mr. Monk and The Cobra but he went undercover in Mr. Monk is at your service and and saved her life. Also from this she she have her father put Monk on retainer since she would benefit from this. Also I see Natalie was driving a Audi, was this a gift from Mom or Dad? Did anyone do any tests to see that they had the right body for his first wife. This reminded me of Columbo episodes where he matches wits with the killer. They even was the Lawrence Harvey episode on Columbo where he was the Chessmaster. There have been a few Monk episodes that have reminded me of Columbo.
susan1017
Good epi. Funny, witty.

alex455
I just watched this eppy and I must to say...it was really funny episode. The whole plot was really good, "we should kiss" was funny and Monk's look was lol. When Monk wanted to plant the poison it was a little scary cuz it wouldn't be Monk we know and love.
When Monk and Stott were talking...when Monk told Stott how Trudy grabbed his both hands before she died...it was really sad to hear...
Julie flirting? Monk's saying she done this before, she's good at it... and Natalie's shut up... haha...

The end of course was funny too. The thing with the autograph and check...rolf...

jgcole02
Not to be overly negative, but best episode? Monk is a terrific show; this was not its best episode. The police, notified by a prominent consultant who has solved countless cases for them that a man has threatened his wife's life would not find a bottle hidden by an alcoholic who has fallen off the wagon? Could she have hidden it so well? That's not even the biggest problem. How does Chessman switch the headstones overnight by himself? And when the police go to the cemetary to exhume, they search the headstones rather than going by the cemetary's records? Cemetaries know where they bury people and keep records and layouts of their grounds. The problem with the headstone--assuming one person could move them overnight, would have been noticed when the police found the wrong headstone on the plot identified by the cementary. The smartest person in the world would not know this?

Monk has had many wonderful episodes. This isn't one of them.

haha! I asked myself the same rhetorical question! I said to myself "Natalie has an AUDI? Perhaps that's why she's desperate for Monk to sign that paycheck faster!" And then I thought it was so funny compared to that car that Sharona used to drive--I imagined Sharona sticking a bumper sticker on her old car that read "If this car was a horse, I'd have to shoot it!"
Monk's chauffer is really driving him around in style these days...

Well, I just clicked on a new thread and as I was reading some posts, I noticed a huge silver AUDI car on the right-hand side of the screen. It was a huge advertisement for "the Audi Summer Event." So I think this is probaby why Natalie is shown driving this luxury vehicle...hehehe.

Wow! It was a great episode. Not the best from the entire series, but very good. Very, very, extremely good. Many funny scenes... Well, I don't know what to say, 'cause I would have to write the whole page. It was just wonderful episode, the whole plot was ingenious. Loved the part with a coffee cup, check and autograph and much, much more I cannot think of now.

I can't be wrong, but I'm almost sure that Natalie has got Audi A4 Avant. But, not sure.

I hope that next episode will be even better.
