I agree with Bflogal and think the idea by the critic is, simply put, ludicrous. Unless the system for selecting shows is corrupt, if the same shows are being consider, I don't believe the fault lies with them but is due to the plain fact that, positively, they are deserving of the repetitive selection and negatively, nothing new is worthy enough to be chosen.
As Bflogal suggested maybe like baseball with its "rookie" award that limits participation to new shows but I wonder if the perceived problem is limited to only comedy: what about drama, musicals, anime, etc? I remember one time Disney was accused of dominating the category of animated films but what was the alternative: discontinue the category, honor those who place second only or just wait till another genuius appears?
I also agree. The thing that nags at me if they were to consciously try to swap people out to make room for new shows/actors is that they would then be using as a qualifier something
other than skill and quality of performance in determining winners. I love Bflogal's idea of a new category just for new shows. They do this in the grammys--Best New Artist. Why not a similar category in the Emmys? Brilliant. A category just for leads and supporting actors in shows that premiered that year.
Added: As for leads and supporting actors in shows that are in their second season and beyond, I'm sorry--I think they have to compete. One aspect of the arguments I'm hearing is that these arguments, in a back handed way, seem to imply that there are other considerations at work, like Tony has won numerous times for reasons other than his performance. Personally, I am always very leery of arguments that rely in whole or in part on raising suspicion.
