Is anyone else disturbed by the decline in the show's writing and the choppy editing? I am a diehard VDO fan, and would watch him recite the phone book on Pay Per View, but.........the stories don't have the crisp writing of past years, and don't let VDO display the excellent acting skills he posses. Anyone else see a decline in the storylines and the overall writing quality?

YES. i really miss the simplicity/cop show-ness of the old epis (tie clip, leather binder)...i do like the new season though. its just different. but i like my old g/e better. i agree with some of the others who have the killer figured out from the beginning.. i also havent been smart enough in past seasons to do that. i did get quite a kick out of eames laughing this epi...how long has it been?! and i do feel like they are getting back to each other. (im not a shipper, but i really felt a shippy glance or two in this one...)

i absolutley did a double take when goren did the arresting!! and my hubby pionted out we havent heard a "no, see..." in quite a while.

I understand your frustration, but speaking as a person who has to wait till Thursday for the episode to air I appricate people putting things in spoiler boxes!

I'm working 2 jobs this summer and I don't have a lot of time, so I come on the episode threads to check whether or not this is an episode that I should watch first time around or if I can tape it and wait for a week to see it, cause an hour more is really useful to me. I don't want the episode to be spoiled for me, but I do want to read quick general comments things like "Eames and Goren seem so happy" or "I love this episode" cause then I know if I need to get the kids in bed by 10 (yes I am working as a part-time Nanny), or if I can wait until my day off (like today) to see the episode.

So to all who keep things in spoiler boxes I want to give a big:

biggrin.gif THANK YOU biggrin.gif

Your consideration for the Canadians, people without cable, and people from other foreign countries is MUCH appreciated!

Thats what I tried to explain in my post...not everyone gets to see them on Sunday...so the spoliers are just to be polite to toher viewers and fans.

And...you are welcome biggrin.gif

I loved everything about this episode. To me, it was like a delicious dessert. I enjoyed every mouthful, and it left me wanting more! Not only did we get Bobby smiling (and Eames, too) we got Bobby laughing. The magic was more than I expected. I thought we'd get a glimpse, maybe VDO doing one little thing, instead, we were treated to lots of BobbyMagic. There was an undercurrent of angst, just enough for us to be reminded all is not resolved, but the way G/E gelled, I'm very encouraged. Love the tag team aria, although I still prefer the Goren aria. This is my favorite angst-free (mostly) episode of the past several seasons.

It's interesting VDO loved magic tricks when he was a kid. This epi sure fit his childhood backround. I thought, as I said before, he acted like a child in a candy, or toy store. I loved the laughter, and the excitement he seemed to have with this show. Good for Bobby!

Here, bb (can I call you bb?). You just sit right here with your plate and eat that nasty little ol' thought away. We'll help you pass the time. Besides, they will re-air "Vanishing Act" several more times before the end of the week and we have all the past seasons on DVD we can watch. A new G/E epi will be here before you know it! smile.gif

Yes you can call me bb (although bb stands for big brother) thank you so much for th munchies I love it. I guess reruns will have to do until the next new epi.

There were so many holes in that plot, I feel that the writer's were insulting our intelligence. Then I realized that they know we just want to see our Bobby, so OK.

Things that bothered me the most.

1. Why didn't they guy have more of a beard/facial hair growth after 31 days.?

2. Rodgers should have know that he had a central line for feeding pruposes, she screwed up (other things on her mind?)

3. Were we supposed to think that he was holed up in the abandoned store front the entire time? They could have ran the loop over and over again.

Such stupid writing. A laim plot. Remember when the story was seen through the criminal's eyes and we watched the bad guy squirm as Bobby figured it out.

But, all is forgiven because Bobby looked HOT!

It never even occured to me about the facial hair, good catch.
As for the writing, I've seen problems with that all season. I like the story lines, but some of th lines are off. Most of the problems seem to be coming to the conclusions at the end of the episodes.

My favorite Goren & Eames episode so far this season...loads of fun. Good to see Goren back in his old school groove smile.gif

Am looking forward to reviewing notes on it with my best friend who does a lot of amateur magic (card tricks).

I either knew the secrets behind some of the tricks Goren messed with like the magician's cane that appears out of thin air, making the key to the holding cell appear in his hand (poor Officer Jones), the pan with the fake flowers, the guillotine (Harry Anderson does a variation of that illusion with his arm), the woman in half in the box (part of Dean Holiday's act), the mummy box illusion Christopher Lloyd was doing...or mostly could figure them out.

The code prevents me from revealing all of them but I'll bet VDO is a little less popular with the most amateur of magicians right now rolleyes.gif laugh.gif The really good illusionist's secrets are still safe though

Seriously if you go to a magic store and ask how a trick/illusion is done, you are committing yourself to paying for it when you get the answer. I learned that from visiting a few magic shops with my playing card illusion obsessed friend (and that's how come I know how the cane from thin air illusion works rolleyes.gif wink.gif ...you'd have to ask one of my other friends about how much he knows about 'throwing fireballs' and how he lightly burned his fingers a couple of times playing around with that illusion...a result of the same magic shop visit blink.gif ). That is a part of the magician's code and I'm glad Goren acknowledged that.

And while the nurses here caught on to some things not being right behind Miles's big 'buried alive for 30 days' illusion, the point was the crowds wouldn't be hip to the inconsistencies AND IT IS AN ILLUSION that they sold pretty well. That's how David Blane or David Copperfield or Cris Angel or Lance Burton work. REALLY GOOD PRESENTATION & MISDIRECTION.

By the way I know of a real-life story of a magician who really screwed up a 'buried alive in a coffin' illusion escape...the variation was he had mixed and drying concrete poured over his buried 6 feet under coffin (instead of just buried under plain old dry dirt) and he made two miscalculations that literally killed him
1) the rate at which the concrete would dry and harden (faster than the magician figured)
2) the *weight* of six feet of wet concrete over a coffin (it's much heavier than dry dirt and hard to go through to escape plus there's less air in it than there is in dirt)

CI is still a must see but I'm not watching as intently as I used to. I think the perps have been too light-weight(excluding Senseless). I don't know if it's the writing or the actors' interpretations. I love the arias but the one between G/E and the magician wasn't impressive because magic man wasn't a formidable opponent. It was like G/E knocking down an annoying little brother.

I think you have a good point here. Where's the bad guy who's really a challenge for Goren? The judge from ITWSH, the master thief from Silver Lining, the assasin from Dead, and the ultimate Nicole Wallace... now they gave him a workout. I'd like to see more like them also.

Like everyone else, I adored this episode. So many juicy details & tidbits to re-watch for. I'm also a fan of the clean shaven Bobby, but his beard was neat & well trimmed, so it's OK. cool.gif

Oh, is is just me or did Rogers' hair look a little better? It looks like they added some low lights to it which warmed up her face a little. Of course, it could have just been the lighting.

I thought so too. Maybe we're just getting more used to it?

Jryan mentioned the blond female Detective who seems to be the lead at many of the initial crime scenes. Anyone think she might be good for Goren? She's the right age & not bad looking. She seems patient with Goren, like Alex is. Can't tell if she's wearing a ring.

Don't medical dramas have somebody with medical expertise on their staff? I think all of the L&O's have enough medical happenings. If they don't have a medical expert on their team, they really should get one. This isn't the only L&O episode I have seen with mistakes concerning medical procedure, terminology or practice.

The writer who wrote this episode mentioned a magician technical adviser. Why not splurge for a medical adviser too?

Today, my mom and I were comparing our reviews of the episode via telephone. She thought that VDO was channeling Orson Welles....What do you think?

I'm still wondering is he's making another movie and, hence, the beard...

Does your Mom know about "Five Minutes, Mr. Wells?" And I think VDO's in pre-production for his western he's producing/directing/acting in. That explains the beard & hair.

OK, once and for all, since folks seem to be forgetting.

The reason VDO looks so much different in "Please Note" versus in "Vanishing Act" is that "Please Note" was filmed waaaaaaay back before the writer's strike! It was shown "out of order" from when it was filmed.

Remember, VDO/Goren re-appeared clean-shaven and smartly suited for the hearing after the Tates incident in "Untethered", but spiraled down again looking for Donny and then the whole undercover operation mess in "Purgatory" -- in "Vanishing" act, he still looks like he did in "Purgatory", cuz those 2 were filmed back-to-back for the G/E team.

"Please Note" was filmed right after "Untethered" and was "supposed" to fall right before his suspension or right after his coming back, but then the strike occurred and "Purgatory" was written, and well.....here we are watching an epi that is shown "out of order" from when it was filmed.

I hope that satisfactorily explains why he has such a well-developed beard in such a short time.
DonnaLJo
Is your post for me, flashy? I know all about the out of sequence showing, and why "PLease Note" has him clean shaven. I was explaining why Goren/VDO has a beard from April 2008 to the present. He's involved in his western.

There ya go!! I'm still waiting for Nicole Wallace to come back. Those are the shows that really show Goren's many layers. She gives him a chance to show what he can do as a detective and as a human being, as well. I love to watch the two of them go after each other. It's like Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty!

ANd I bet he sliced many vegetables for his mom.....cut the heads off his sisters' dolls, and just performed demonstrations for the neighborhood kids.

I'm confused, are you ranting because you have to click on the spoiler box, or because people are posting before other time zones have seen the show?

I totally agree with staying off and not peeking.

Do we here in the East, wait an hour for central time to watch, or 3 hours until the west coast, does mountain time wait, what about people in other countries. At least the spoiler is a litle bit of courtesy.

I was ranting about the spoiler boxes. Once the episode starts airing (anywhere) i dont' think we should have to use them. If you're in the west coast...just know that the east coast sees it...what, 3 hours before you? if you don't want spoilers...don't look at the thread. It's the same as choosing whether or not to click the spoiler box.

I'm just annoyed having to click so much.

My best friend didn't get to see this episode on Sunday, so I called to let her know it was on tonight. I've been telling her how good it was and how much fun it was to see VDO doing magic. Since I have satellite, it was on 3 hours earlier for me. But I put my tape in at 7:00 and watched it at the same time she was watching it. She called me when it was over and she said it was good, but I could tell she didn't love it as much as I did. She said that it was too fantastic, that it couldn't really happen in real life. This seems to be a common complaint of hers when she watches TV or movies--yet one of her favorite shows is Desperate Housewives. Go figure! blink.gif

But I have to admit, she had a question that I have and that I still don't understand. Just how did Dean get the body out of the casket, out of the safe room, into his car, to Coney Island (not clear on the geography involved), out of the car, back stage, and into the box--without help and without being seen? I know he's a magician, but if there was a trick, what was it? Or would it violate the code to reveal it? laugh.gif

I loved this episode, and I decided to ignore the many plot holes. I am not a nurse but my sister is and I know she spent a lot of time during her training moving people around in their bed so that they would not get bruises and flesh wounds (decubitus?). Also - good point about the beard, how did it not grow?? Maybe he was too young to have a beard wink.gif

The guess the murderer made about the "betrayal"... that is pretty general. And Bobby started to squirm when he said that so the magician knew he was on to something. I wonder - if this episode was filmed BEFORE Purgatory, what did they mean by it? It can't have been his undercover job.

They were smiling and laughing so much in that episode, it was fun but a bit strange wink.gif maybe I'm not used to it anymore. Alex's laugh when the mind reader told her she had "anger issues" was definitely forced.

Cute: him doing tricks for her, the hands touching when she brought him coffee...

Alex seems to do be a lot more involved lately. But when she was playing with the props in the end scene... that was strange, that's not Eames. But in general - thank you dear writers to give us back the Team!

I do agree that the writing seems less intense than it used to be. None of the crimes "touch" me anymore. It's now simply two detectives solving lala crimes. But as long as those two are VDO and KE it's fine with me smile.gif

What's with Ross and Rodgers??? I want to know more!

The hispanic girl who found out about the box, was it her who flirted with Wheeler in the first episode of season six? And where do I know the blonde detective from?

I loved this episode, and I decided to ignore the many plot holes. I am not a nurse but my sister is and I know she spent a lot of time during her training moving people around in their bed so that they would not get bruises and flesh wounds (decubitus?). Also - good point about the beard, how did it not grow?? Maybe he was too young to have a beard wink.gif How did the murderer know that he had to start the pre-filmed tape? And how did he get the body up that rope? Ah, better not think about that smile.gif And also - he confessed because he wanted the world to know that Miles was a fake???? The confessions seem a bit lame lately.

The guess the murderer made about the "betrayal"... that is pretty general. And Bobby started to squirm when he said that so the magician knew he was on to something. I wonder - if this episode was filmed BEFORE Purgatory, what did they mean by it? It can't have been his undercover job.

I want to know more about Ross and Rodgers, too! But I'll be happy with just a hint now and then. You are right, the Hispanic girl is the same one who flirted with Wheeler. I hope she shows up more, I like her. And the blond detective has been around before. I think she was in Privilege last season, and I think she's been in a few others but I can't remember specific episodes right now. She seemed to be enjoying Bobby playing with the magic tricks, too.

I also like recurring staff, like the girl from ballistics. It's always nice to see "familiar" faces, especially since the steady cast consist of only three people plus Rodgers. Someone mentioned Rodgers hair - is it red again??

There ya go!! I'm still waiting for Nicole Wallace to come back. Those are the shows that really show Goren's many layers. She gives him a chance to show what he can do as a detective and as a human being, as well. I love to watch the two of them go after each other. It's like Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty!

WORD

I so much want to see her back in an episode. I think she is great. I think the TV guide artlcle mentioned her. So maybe there is real hope for her return.

FusseKat, I love the new avatar. I read in an e-mail that the average man's penis is three times the length of his thumb. THUD. ohmy.gif

Ha, how many of us have studied those hand with the long slender fingers and the big feet and wondered about the one bit of his anatomy that we have not seen. Those of us that have seen Guy have seen everything but that, even the pubic hair. I have my own theories but will keep them to myself. My fantasies.

Lenore', check out the Nicole topic, I posted why Bobby needs her back. She is such an asset to LOCI! smile.gif

Check out "Claire Dolan"...in the last scene that Eldon and Claire have sex, when he's a bit violent with her, VDO raises his left knee and pushes up a bit and then...something makes a very brief, very quick appearance. I saw a flash and then had to rewind and go forward on slo-mo...husband verified sighting. Still...it could have been my very, very overactive imagination!

Speaking of Vanishing Acts...my TV schedule originally showed CI for tonight at 10:00...now...it has vanished and I'm ticked! They have put in a new Canadian show instead....ARGHHHHHH!!!! So now, instead of just waiting an extra 4 days to see the episode I have to wait until CTV deems it the right time to watch the show...very frustrating!

Someone said somewhere that it has been moved to Friday night at 10 (I think) for Canadians. Check out tomorrow's schedule. I hope you get to see it because it's an awesome episode.
