I watched the preview, see no reason for a rant. It's another show about a detective with a distinct investigative technique. So should we start ranting about Shawn/Goren/Monk ripping off Sherlock Holmes or Columbo?

WTF? Neither Sherlock Holmes nor Columbo can hold a wet-wipe to Adrian Monk!

It does look like the mentalist is trying to be very similiar to Psych. But it looks like Psych minus all the fun, I don't see the mentalist lasting very long.

Just clicked on the link for the preview (Thanks Bubba!) and wow, how lame is that show? The description of it on Youtube and the title really made it sound like Psych. It does seem like an unfunny version of Psych. I don't think it will last very long either.

Heh...I observed the same thing the other day re The Mentalist. "It's a 'Psych' ripoff! Geez! Come up with something original!" Of course, my brother derided what I said...but deep in his heart, he knows I'm right.

Actually it's not a rip off of Psych at all
It's a spin off of the BBCA show called Wire in the Blood which is based on a book by the same name. It's a very dramatic show and like a LOT of our shows that are dramatic and even some of the comedy ones (think Office) they are taken from BBC or Aussie tv.
I hope it is as good as Wire in the Blood b/c that is actually a very awesome show!!! Robson Green plays Dr. Tony Hill and it is a two hour show (they air here that way) but across the pond they are 30 mins - we just group them for a long showing together anyway....I can see where you would think that b/c it is of course about the powers of observation but ...............

The Office, which I don't watch is a rip-off of a BBC show. I can't think of the name of the show.

that was my point about this post (that it is actually a rip-off of 'Wire in the Blood' just like 'Office') I believe that is what I wrote ... so not exactly sure of your post .... The Mentalist is not based on Psych and the Americanized version of Office is based on Office from across the pond which has the same title etc.

Everything has been done before; The Mentalist is in no way "ripping off" Psych. They are both equally good shows, but more importantly, they are not the same show, so you cannot look at The Mentalist with a biased eye toward Psych. The Mentalist probably didn't even get the idea from Psych. The creators probably thought of it before the show aired; that happens a lot with show creators.
On a completely different note, stop resurrecting dead topics. There are several other useless topics where people are discussing Psych and The Mentalist.
On yet another note, welcome to the forums!

Hey guys, calm down. I think Psych creators have realized what a rip off Mentalist is. But then they make fun of it on Psych, and it just makes it funnier! I mean, the recent episode of Psych had a website dedicated to Mentalist! That's why I love Psych, they don't get mad. They get EVEN. Which is why Psych is so very much superior!

I'll say it again--The Mentalist is
not a ripoff; it's just similar. If you're calling The Mentalist a ripoff, then you're calling Psych a ripoff. Flaxman Low, dating back to 1899 is the ORIGINAL psychic detective, so I don't want to hear you guys calling The Mentalist a ripoff anymore. Psych stole the idea just as much as The Mentalist did. Also, Psych didn't get "even"; Berman himself said that the shout-outs to The Mentalist have nothing to do with the similar themes.

Ha, yes, he may have said it has nothing to do with the similar themes, but in the same breath turns around and says Simon Baker is dreamy and when he needs inspiration while writing he looks at pictures of him. Hrm, I sense a bit of sarcasm. Gotta love Berman

I thought that was hilarious, how Baker is Berman's inspiration. I don't know whether he was half-joking or completely serious, but even so, I don't know which scenario would be funnier.

Exactly....as a fan of BOTH shows and therefore following them on Twitter, the Psych writers actually make fun of The Mentalist!
