Stranger in a Strange Land - Heinlein classic. It almost seems like the freaky psychic stuff that happenes was written so that the special effects for a movie would be possible in the time period (the 60s) and would be fairly low budget.

I made up the perfect commercial for the movie, "The Spellsinger". A young man is in the middle of a LOTR mideval type battlefield. An army is closing in . . . when suddenly he whips his guitar from his back and starts playing some Hendirx. The magic surrounds him and bursts outwards - causing all of the combatants to fall over - buzzed out of their minds.

Anyway, these are just a couple of the many books that should be made into a movie. When Americans get tired of big budget pyrotechnics . . . just seeing dozens of explosions and lots of gunplay . . . maybe we'll get something that's worth eight bucks. There are some killer stories out there . . .

Good choices. I have a few.

"The Phantom Tolbooth" - Surreal fantasy. Would make a great family movie.

"The Queen and I" - If not a lottery-funded film, a gentle TV comedy. The monarchy is abolished and The Royals forced to live on a council estate.

"Martyn Pig" A very eerie drama about a boy who copes with his dad's accidental death a strange way.

"Skellig" - A boy finds a strange man in his new garage. Very profound children's book. One of the author's other books, "Clay" was turned into a TV film.

Hi Bubba here, I haven't heard of some of these before, I will have to check them out the next time I'm in the library.

Staying fat for Sarah Byrns. I read it in high school and got to meet the writer of the book at school. My english teacher wrote the writer and told him about how me and several other students related to the book. So when he was in the atl. area he came by my school and my teacher pulled me out of class to meet him and talk to him. After we talked for awhile i told him i would like to see it made into a movie and he said he would to and that i was the kind of person he wanted to play Jenny. He said even down to my looks i was what he pictured as Jenny. This is a book you won't want to put down. Read it. Its' a good read.

Wow. Those sure are some good suggestions. That's cool that, "Starship Troopers" (Heinlein) has already been made a movie . . . let's hope that more Hollywood types get wise and contribute some good art to the silver screen. "Stranger" - has a cult following and created a new word . .. "Grok" . . . and I love art that does that including the poem, "The Jabberwoky" which invented the word, "chortle".

I didn't like the ending of, "Stranger" though . . . but somehow it fits into today's zetigheist anyway. Who knows?

I sure love my Heinlein collection. Apparently others love the stuff too since Heinlein has a crater on Mars named after him.

I'm very excited to see that "The Secret Life of Bees" is being made into a movie. The book was great! I would love for any of Kristin Hannah's books to be movies, although sometimes the movie kinda ruins the book.

Cool enough. Never judge a book by its cover. wink.gif

I'm pretty excited about the movie. I hadn't read any of the books and got one as a secret santa gift and was instantly hooked.

I'd really like to see The Canterbury Tales made into a movie, it'd be long but it'd be so funny.

Would love to see The Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich made into a movie, or series of movies or television series... heck anything

I still cannot believe they are making "The Lovely Bones" into a movie. At first I loved that book, but toward the end, I just hated it. The only reason I want to see the film is to see HOW they are going to make a movie about a girl watching herself die (seriously-she gets murdered and witnesses it huh.gif ), and then the majority of the book is about her being in Heaven.

You are so right, Parcher. Sometimes screenwriters ARE dumb! dry.gif

I watched "Martian Child" about three weeks ago and absolutely LOVED it. It stars John Cusack and it's WONDERFUL! He totally deserved at least a nomination for that. Basically it's about this widower who adopts this little boy who is convinced he's (the boy) is from Mars. I wanted to read the book, so did some research on it. According to the summary it seems like the book was completely changed from the movie. However, in this case it was a good thing. Otherwise I would have never read the book. In all honesty, I only rented the movie because John Cusack is in it, but I just love it.

Another page-to-screen adaptation that is very good (IMO) is "Just Like Heaven". Don't bash me, until I'm finished, okay!? That movie got really bad reviews but I am convinced that the reason is because people hadn't read the book.
The book is called If Only It Were True.
In the book, this female doctor gets into a car accident and ends up in a coma. Her spirit leaves her body (but she doesn't know she's a "ghost" yet), and when she gets to her apartment, she finds that someone has already moved in. He's the only one who can see her. So he convinces his friend that this girl is a ghost as well. The girl finds out that her sister has authorized the hospital to take her off of life-support, and the majority of the movie/book revolves around them devising a plan to merge her spirit and body back together.

I know... I know... It sounds insane. I have read that book three times and I did find the merging of the body section to drag quite a bit. However in the movie it is handled pretty well. I didn't even know it had been made into a movie till I saw the original book with a note on it saying that it was now a major motion picture. . First of all, they had changed not only the titles but also the characters names; BOTH of them. So reluctantly I rented it.... and loved it. for one thing, they changed the ending but that was a good move, since I didn't really care for the way the book ended; although it was more "realistic" if you can call it that.

I haven't read the book anymore, but I have the movie and each time I watch it I love it more. Oh, and it stars Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo. Two of my favorite performers!

I love "The Lovely Bones". Such a good book. It's a shame that "Lucky" probably won't be filmed.

I can't believe "The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas" is being made into a film already. I just finished reading it. It's amazing. I think it's being released in September.

Well, they already did, "Starship Troopers" and, "The Puppetmasters" (basically) . . . Maybe, "Time for the Stars" . . . that would be just lovely. Another Heinlein classic.

Would the public be bored by this intelligent work though? Does the fault lie not in our STARS, but in ourselves? Is the reason why our movies suck . . . is it because we're too dumb?

Wow. Omg, makes ya think, doesn't it? wink.gif
