Yuck.
I know Vincent D'nofrio (sp?) can't be in every episode,
but seriously replacing Chris Noth (not the greatest actor that ever lived)
with Jeff Goldblum (who in addition to being a lousy actor is an A #1 creep in person
if you've ever seen him slobber over young girls in the gym in L.A.) is NOT
an upgrade to the franchise.
Okay.. we get it... you probably couldn't afford Chris any more.
How about an interesting woman? Certainly Mary McCormack is showing
how USA viewers can be drawn to a quirky woman character? How about
one of the other interesting characters from the L&O universe?
How about some creative scheduling by guesting in other people from the L&O (all francises)
universe. Surely there's someone who comes with more audience appeal
that creepy Jeff.
I guess I'll only watch half of L&O in the future. When you get a clue and
fire Jeff after one season, maybe I'll be back.
Sigh.

ok, there's no need to go there....
Here is my idea for the first 2-3 episodes of Season 8:
Goldblum's character comes to major case. He's arrogant and wondering why it took him so long to get to major case. He's a good closer and he knows it. He's exhausted all the other cases at his former precinct. There is still friction between Goren and Eames, so Ross decides to pair Eames up with the new guy. He tells Eames that she needs to "break him in" and she is responsible for showing him the ropes at Major Case (She's tough and smart). He puts Goren with Wheeler because he knows he's Wheeler's rabbi and figures Wheeler will keep him in the loop with Goren. Wheeler is apprehensive to work with Goren with his reputation of being unorthodox and being a rat. Meanwhile, Goren continues to walk the line, not wanting to jeapordize his career again. Wheeler gets called into Ross' office for information and she tells Ross that she doesn't know what the problem with Goren is because he's been really easy to work with. Now Eames on the other hand is having problems with Goldblum. He's not following procedure and goes over her head. A serious case comes their way and all 4 detectives are assigned to the case. Eames realizes she would much rather work with Goren and they get reassigned for further cases. Then its Goren/Eames and Wheeler/Goldblum.
What do you guys think?

You know, at first when I just read about the news on tvguide.com I thought it was a joke. But changes may be good for the series just as long as they don't kill off either Goren or Eames. I am still holding for a Goren and Eames in the sheets together. I think Dick Wolf may be planning for the future because Goldblum very well be the face of CI should either Goren and Eames leaves. I think this Law and Order series is attractive to the actors involves because of the 10 or less episodes per year between the leads characters. This way the actors gets to do other things and not get so bored which was what happened to Vincent.

Good one. I like it. I still think that the season will end with Bobby and Eames splitting up. Maybe next season starts with Eames with Goldblum. She will realize how awful he is and want to be back with Bobby. So I totally agree with what you said.
The case they could be working on could be Logan being killed by Nicole Wallace.

Agree that these threads need combining
From the writers (email came to me at 7 pm Eastern time this evening)
"Chris Noth will be replaced by Jeff Goldblum for Season 8. We'll have additional news [for you] in the morning."
Sorry to see Chris going but... Yay! Jeff Goldblum! Good call!
Goldblum happens to be a good friend of one of my writer strike buds (an actor who does theater out in Los Angeles). So I feel like 'extended family' is joining Team CI.

Certainly Jeff deserves his own thread--each of the leads has one (or two, or three, or 5,000). How sad that the very first thread dedicated to a new lead on the show is a negative one. Not very hospitable. Personally, I'm embarrassed. But if this thread is going to stick around (and it will, because we just can't resist posting on it), then I will be here to say:

Bubba I'd back deputizing you as assistant mod for the CI threads. You have excellent judgment and are more polite and patient than I would be.
Admin is a tough job...the person doing it is only human and has to eat, sleep, answer the call of nature etc.
By the way is there an option to ignore a thread? That might solve some people's problems rather than having to post to the offending thread(s) about how offended we are by them, thus bumping them to Page 1 prominence...

Jeff Goldblum's detective show, "Raines," was a complete mimickry of Goren-
I would be careful when it comes to Dick Wolf and him putting Goldblum in here and then next time we'll be talking about Vincent leaving-
It was better to have two opposite detectives working CI and not Goren and Goren's imitator-
And it better not be Goldblum's character that saves Goren from his nosedive at the end of this season, though maybe now I'm thinking it might be Logan who takes a bullet for Goren-
Regi.

I looked up Goldblums record on IMDB and he's nothing special as an actor that I can see. I don't see that he'd add much to it, though it could be worse. They could be adding Howie Mandel. Did those words come out of my mouth? Bad mouth!

I am not a fan of Goldblum and I am sad to see Chris leaving, but I will at least watch an episode or two before I truly make up my mind. I am willing to give Jeff a shot.
I don't see either VDO or Kathryn letting the Bobby/Alex team be split up. It was necessary in season 3 when Kathryn was pregnant, but Bishop was only brought in as a temporary partner. I think I remember reading somewhere VDO and Kathryn have both said that they will not continue the show without the other one being present. Granted they have no control over what the writers do, but they might have made it a stipulation in their contracts that the Goren/Eames team remain intact.

Congrats to JG. I liked Raines and did not think the character was Monkish or Gorenish (as if those two have a monopoly on "quirk"). Comparison of JG and VDO is expected but JG will bring his own uniqueness to CI and hopefully will be welcomed. I'm looking forward to seeing him with Julianne (if she stays).

I am not a fan of Jeff Goldblum, either, however I was fond of his movies such as The Fly, Independence Day, & Jurassic Park. If DW finds Jeff the best choice for CN’s replacement, I will support it and give a chance how he portrays his new character in loci. At least, with him around, VDO or Det. Bobby Goren will remain on the show.
I am going to miss Chris Noth for I am used to his Det. Mike Logan character since fifth season. That was great shocking news to me after I read the article online. I wish him the best for his life, family, friends and career. He will be missed and I want to thank him for keeping VDO and loci on top.

I love Jeff Goldblum. He was brilliant in "Raines" 2 seasons ago (so of course it was cancelled!).
That being said, Jeff Goldblum ALWAYS plays "Jeff Goldblum", no matter what the role. It may be too much quirkiness for one show.
Chris Noth did add a balance, because there was NOTHING quirky about Logan. In fact, the CI Logan was always a little flat, missing the spark of the earlier L&O original. I will miss him, but am still excited about Jeff coming on

I have no issues with Jeff Goldblum and actually have enjoyed some of the movies he's been in. However, I have to say he's bit of a one-note actor - he seems to play the SAME character in everything he's in (at least to me). So, I imagine we'll just be seeing the same character we've seen him portray in other features.
The thing with Chris and Vincent is they create UNIQUE characters for every project they're in, Jeff Goldblum doesn't strike me as that kind of actor.
I guess we will have what happens and I will try to keep an open mind.
