Welcome AubieDaubie!

Newbie myself, but have pretty much caught up with last season to understand a bunch. Don't forget to catch the old episodes online if you can, it's definitely a good show ---check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Hi all! Newbie to the BN board.

A good episode, I think.
Spoiler:
Obviously, lots of questions raised. Who is Carla? What does she want this info for? If she uses this info for bad stuff, how will that affect Mike? And what about Fi and Mike? Will Sam make up with his lady friend? And more importantly, they're trading in Mike's old car (which was totally hot) for a Saab? I understand Saab is a sponsor, but come on. It's like destroying Dean's car on Supernatural. Plus, those older black cars are sexy.

Can't wait for next week!

Welcome all! It's great to have so many fans around!

Wow - I just got done watching the this episode again -- plus it's on again right now on the USA network... so it's pretty much been the best.day.ever. *sigh*

I feel the need to document all my favorite parts of the show - since I did it for season 1, i figured, why the heck not... There are soo many great parts, of course, so this is just my fun lil take...

Burn Notice – Season 2 - #1 Breaking & Entering: Favorite Moments:

1. New clips in the intro! Wow – they jammed packed it in! Me likes!
2. Opening scene– explosions & chaos outside with Michael & the Caddy inside the truck: EXCELLENT
3. Michael (on phone with Carla): "Yeah, sweetie – I thought we were going to discuss why you burned me?"
4. Carla (via phone): "Don't call it a job – call it a favor."
Michael: "I assume it has to do with the guy you have gift-wrapped in duct tape?"
5. The Caddy! The poor poor Caddy! (but at least it wasn't the Charger!)
6. New show sponsor: SAAB… ah, it's all making sense now…
7. Michael (to Jimmy the Client): "If you can be good, you get to ride up front!"
8. Sam wearing Michael's shirt = hilarious
9. Michael enters his loft and trains his gun on Sam as toast pops up:
Sam (to Michael): "Ho! Whoa! Mike, easy! Just me and a couple slices of Wonderbread!"
10. Sam: "Mike, how do you fit into these little shirts? They're like doll clothes!"
11. When Michael is washing the Caddy, Fi storms up, and the water hose slowly droops down = hilarious
12. Michael's accent! "Terry Miller"
13. Sam (to Fiona): "I'm just saying, I can count on one hand the number of buddies I got who would stage an armed assault to save my butt okay? You got Mike – you got -- " (he stops counting)
14. Mentioned: Okay, Veronica was mentioned at least 3 or 4 times = I hope she shows up in an episode soon *fingers crossed*
15. The parking lot shootout: Fi & Michael 'shooting' at each other – It takes a good "markswoman" (as the case may be) to miss. The grin on Fi's face = priceless!
16. Mom with a shotgun = hilarious
17. Michael (to Mom): "This is the disaster? A coffeemaker built in 1967?"
18. Fi's dresses = wow!
19. Fi: "You have a high estimation of my skills, Michael."
Michael: "You've earned every bit of it, Fi."
20. Spotted: The Charger!
21. Fi's flirting act at Iso-Gene = hilarious
22. Fi: "I'm your girl consultant now? When did I sign up for that job?"
Sam: "Okay, fine. Forget it. I've got lots of other friends with ovaries – I got you – " (he stops counting)
23. JD's biceps = nuff said.
24. Spotted: YOGURT!
25. Michael: "I gotta visit my mom – Sam, get on that boat."
Sam: "Aye aye Skipper."
26. (On boat) Fi: "You want this BIG, right?"
Michael: "Just enough for the boat, Fi – try not to break all the windows in South Beach."
27. Michael & Fi: "The Talk"
28. Michael (voiceover): "When you work as a spy, it's easy to think of people as assets – resources to accomplish a goal - because you don't have a personal relationship with an asset – you don't care about an asset – you don't miss the scent of an asset when she leaves the room."

Wow. Just great.
Excellent writing, Matt! Excellent job Jeffrey, Bruce, Gabrielle, Sharon & the whole cast & crew!
And this is why I love summer! smile.gif

Is it just me or was the dialogue lost to the music and explosions in the opening segment and the cell phone conversations throughout? Other than missing most of what the woman on the cell phone said throughout the episode, I enjoyed it and look forward to next weeks episode.
JennaV
Wow, Natasha...excellent list and great brain refresher for Ep. 1!! LOVED THE PREMIERE!!!

Favorite line: Sam's about the doll clothes
Favorite JD fashion: The sleeveless shirt, of course
Favorite scene: Those magnificent ripped guns Michael showed off tonight!!
Favorite angst moment: Michael's last comments when Fi left, ie. missing her scent when she left the room.

Michael/Fi may not be together for awhile...but oh, the angst should be sweet!!

Yes, I am a sucker for the angst so looking forward to that.

Great lists Natasha and JennaV! I liked all the parts you guys listed, and I'm adding Mike's accent and Mike taking out the huge gun when the alarm went off. That was just awesome.

I don't think it's just you, and (speaking to the writers, directors and actors) I mean this in a good way. They may be able to fix the thing you're talking about with sound editing, but they also pack so much wonderful stuff into every segment that I have to watch it 2 times before I get most of it. Watching it over and over is so fun because you keep discovering things. So, watch it again and you'll "get" more!! USA, you're smart to post the episodes online this season for this very reason. I have a DVR (same thing as Tivo) that makes it easy for me to watch again, but those who don't have one may not want to go to the trouble of taping every episode on a VCR. It would be frustrating for those who don't have some way to quickly rewatch.

I am so happy that I can't express it all in one post!! biggrin.gif

I'll just keep chattin' with you all and it'll come out that way. Natasha has so much of it covered already.

On the breakup scene, GA and JD did a spectacular job -- put me right back into the horror of those moments from my past -- but are they really broken up or is this just a "psych op" on Fi's part?

Favorite line: Sam's about the doll clothes
^ That was good, but I gotta say I loved Michael's reaction when he realized that was Carla, "Oh shh." And he got up and ran off.

Everything else you said JennaV was spot on for me. His arms were nuts tongue.gif That whole talk with Michael and Fi was sad, but I figured it was going to happen that way. They need to think a head for future episodes. Having them get together too soon, the novelty would wear off. I had to add though, that accent, was anybody else giggling? Cause I was.
mjwannabe
Well I think y'all have summed up what I thought too. Loved it. I had a feeling Michael wasn't going to meet Carla right off the bat, I figured she would toy with him. It's a great start!! I can't wait to go home tonight and rewatch it.
BurningUp
Yep, the doll clothes line was great!

Loved how they introduced Carla in person indirectly, that way!

I flat out die over Jeffrey's smokin' hot bod, even in suits.

The "excellent markman" bullet right between the legs and Fi's paused grin.

It just was a great premier! Totally happy!!

Yeah, I realise that Michael and Fi's relationship had to change, but it seems so abrupt after that tender goodbuy they had at the end of last season. That was alot of action they had to get in that episode, I wouldn't mind if things slow down abit and we develop character more.

But very realistic though. What woman worth her salt would accept a man chasing down people who fired him over his family and love? To her he was choosing his job over his feelings for her. It demonstrated that she would never be #1 with him. If I were in the same situation, I'd walk away too. Don't know if I would continue working with him though. For me, when I'm done with the relationship, I don't want the constant reminder with you being around. Men don't want to just be friends, especially after the relationship is over. This is why Fi and Mikey will continue to be on and off. I'm willing to bet if she shows interest in someone else, Mikey will be as upset as he was in the Wanted Man epi. Same with Fi. She will NOT be able to turn off her feelings that easily.

Agree with you BBB, the whole relationship thing ending so quickly was a bummer. But hey, she'll still be around helping him with stuff so hopefully we'll get to see some sparks fly either way. Kind of like in the first season, Fiona will continue to be a bit playful with Michael, but it won't ever get too serious. At least that's how it's usually written, right? They'll still have a caring relationship, but not necessarily a romantic one. Besides, it'll be interesting to see what they do with the Carla character, because you know Fiona will get a bit jealous that Michael spends a lot of time "talking" with her. Gosh, I wish I could've studied to become a script writer ---I'd have so much fun with this one!!! LOL

I don't see how Michael could possibly be romantically interested in Carla. She is holding his life hostage, threatening his family and friends, and forcing him to do things he doesn't want to do. Unless he's a masochist,  he should hate this woman with a vengeance.

QUOTE (pfchristine @ Jul 10 2008, 09:11 PM) *
Great start!

I thought they made two brilliant moves to kick off the new season. First, the new puppetmaster with the huge but unknown agenda, resources and power. We still get to discover the "man beind the curtain" bit by bit, but with a few twists. Micheal is no longer choosing his own adventures for the most part... that's gotta be a little uncomfortable for him.

Also, he gets to make requests and demands that will be indulged or rebuffed. It doesn't all have to be whatever he can scrape together with almost no budget. Sometimes he'll be given things... like the guns from the opening scene. Opens up a world of possibilities, doesn't it?

Second, Fiona backing away from wanting a relationship with him. I know, I made the boo boo face when it happened too... but this way, the tango continues. Drawn together but held apart. They can go on dancing closer and spinning away for ages. As much as we all wanna see everything work out for them, it's so much more dramatic when they don't.

I'm dating myself here, but remember how much less interesting Cheers was after Sam and Diane finally became a couple? They had a cute moment here and there after that, but mostly it was a big snore. You know who did it right? The West Wing. Josh and Donna make the decision to get on that plane together and give their relatinship a real try in the final episode. Now that's good television. cool.gif

ps: I'm usually a Criminal Intent gal, but this show has really captured my interest in a big way so I thought I'd pop over and toss my two cents in the jar. Howdy biggrin.gif

Hey CI fan, what do you think about Chris Noth leaving and Jeff Goldblum taking his place? I wasn't impressed with Noth so his leaving will have little affect on me. My favorite, though it wasn't originally, is Donofrio. So, I generally yawn through the epis when he's not on it.

Thanks for the recaps NatashaFatale.

Awk. I was not able to watch the epi again until the 10:00 pm PT time. So many phone calls afterward from family and friends and the boyfriend yaking on the phone about work. I actually dozed off and missed a lot of great scenes again. I will go home tonight and watch it again.

I just discovered this show a couple of months ago and quickly caught up watching the re-runs and episodes on the Internet. I had really high expectations and I wasn't let down at all last night. That was a fun episode.

I love how he slips into characters when he's working a job, but that Australian mercenary bloke was the best one yet.

I definitely took notes during the break-in sequence. I've got to try that out!

All three main actors were perfectly cast. They've been great.

And I like how they introduced this new boss or whatever - helping Sam out with his crossword. Ha! I paused the screen to see if there were any clues in the puzzle. No luck.

OMG, vestokes - you are hysterical!... yes Mikey had big guns and yes a big machine gun!!... heehee..

How about Mr. Donovan with the accent thought it was excellent- the work with the dilect coach paid off.... Peace.
AdrianMonk10
I thought the episode was the best yet. It brought back memories of season 1, only with lots more action!!!!

The plane explodes. Mike shoots at Fi and Sam. Mike and Jimmy escape the security company with a grenade launcher. The boat explodes!

I also liked the way Carla communicates with Michael. From writing on Sams crossword to a note in a guy's pocket who she knows Michael will catch.

Anyway, the only disappointment is the (apparent) loss of the Charger. With Michael getting a Saab, I wonder if he's gonna use that instead of the Charger.

Thoughts?

Maybe he only accepted the Saab since he blew up his brother's truck. Nate has been complaining all along about Michael getting the Charger can you imagine what he'd be like now with his truck gone.

Anyway, loved the episode, I was very happy to have the whole gang back and can't wait to see how things unfold this season.

Lots of my fellow fans disagree, but I wasn't impressed with Noth either. He just wasn't interesting enough for LOCI. It was like watching the original Law & Order without the lawyers. So I'm really looking forward to see what they do with Jeff Goldblum and what he does with what they give him. Say whatever else you want about Goldblum... he's not dull!!!! hehe

As for D'Onofrio, he's why I watch. All the panting you guys do over Michael Westen... that's pretty much how I feel about Vincent. Yum.

Now please return to your regularly scheduled Burn Notice drooling, already in progress... lol

Yes, they have to bring back the Charger. First, it's just plain cool and really stands out from all of the Mercedes, BMWs & Porsches on the show. Second, it was the only thing Michael's dad left to him. Third, it can get shot up, torn to pieces and crashed and still be inexpensive to fix. Michael's not swimming in cash so I can't see him spending an arm and a leg every time he finishes a case.

I'm thinking the Saab might be a product placement thing because there were like, four commercials about the new turbo-charged Saab 93.

Gotta Love the Fi and Michael passive aggressive Love. The scene where he had to shoot at her and Sam and then she placed a shot right between his legs and then he looked up at her in the car while she was hanging out the window and then they froze that shot... Man she had the most Wicked look on her face (Looking very Hot mind you with the wind blowing her hair, but I digress...) that I had to play it back several times while laughing my arse off every single time.

Thank God there is not going to be a Sophomore Slump in this shows second season.

BTW, what kind of Sun Glasses is he wearing?

There is so much subtle passive aggressive love undertones between Michael and Fi in each episode, just like in the scene I mentioned. You have to watch each episode again just to catch them. It's also good if you have Tivo while doing it.

Thanks for the Web Page tip.

Okay, I need to check out the writer's overview of the season premiere... But...

In my 2.5 hour drive down to Kentucky yesterday, daydreaming (but watching the road!), one phrase from the show kept popping up in my thoughts -- of course it was something Sam said: "Friends with ovaries..."

Okay, that's one of those "scratch your head -- laugh -- feel uncomfortable because you laughed -- then laugh again" kind of dialogs. Very clever. Wish I'd thought of it. Of course, now, we will be expecting the recipient phrase "friends with testicles" to show up, right?

Good episode. A little "busy", a little over the top -- but it was the season opening. I think it might have been better if they'd stretched it out over 1.5 hours like the series premiere. I do believe there is a fine line with the involvement of Carla and her "friends" (ovaries and testicles optional), but we'll just have to trust Matt and the writers... and see where they take us on this ride.

Loved that line... actually there was a lot of good one line memorable quotes in the epi... the 'beer helped me with my ribs trust me'... ...get the boat 'eih eih skipper' umm the 'tiny shirts'.... loved the whole thing....
Question: the crossword puzzle .. what do you think that meant ... because i am obsessed i froze it and could only make out the first four lines:

NOVA ANISE XMAS
somebody posted a pic... http://burnnotice.purplefreak3.com/gallery...cat=0&pos=3
so many people on this board are so smart and spy like I bet somebody figures it out... I first thought fall november idea anise cookies for christmas ... Ha... i dont know
Anyway ... loved the epi cant wait for more... and CAGilder i hope too more sammy quotes! Peace.

I have to say that I loved the season premiere episode, but I do have a couple of critiques:

First of all, JD's accents are not the area of his best strength with regard to acting. Some people can do them and some can't. If anyone ever saw the flick, "Come Early Morning" with Ashley Judd, you can see him doing a "Southern" accent that doesn't really ring true. Also, as "Terry Miller" in the season opener, JD's accent kept switching back and forth from Aussie to English/East Ender. It lacked linguistic consistency.

Second, I agree with the others who have said they wanted to see more Madeline and Nate. But I guess they're coming back in future episodes.

And to those of you who think that Fiona is out of Michael's life: no way! He still holds her in very high regard and she will always be a big influence on him. Their relationship is complicated by circumstances. If you doubt me, take note of the telephone conversation they had when Fi was telling him to go see his mother. What does he do? He immediately goes to see his mother, illustrating that Michael holds Fiona's advice in very high regard, because you know how he is about taking orders from anyone else. This show is much more nuanced than perhaps some people realize. But the good thing is, it has something for everyone. There's action, adventure, humor, romance....etc. That's why I love it (to paraphrase Shrek, it's like an onion....it has layers).

I thought the season opener was very good - I'm having trouble making the shift into where the story is going (the Carla thing, basically), but the season is young, obviously and it's still the best show on tv. 8-)

Anyway - I wanted to comment on what you said here. Now, I love Jeffrey Donovan and I think he's one of the most amazingly talented actors I've ever seen, but I confess to wondering if you're right about the accents. See, in the first season? I felt that Jeffrey Donovan was making a conscious decision to use wacky accents for Michael's cover stories, because Michael seemed to enjoy playing them with such cheeky irreverence and it wasn't supposed to be a good accent/dialect. His decision to play it funny rather than straight - that really worked for me. Take Michael's stint as Homer in "Unpaid Debts," for instance - that the accent was a little off was for me part of what was so funny about it all. Michael was *so* confident in his own abilities to outwit/outsmart/con the bad guys that he could breezily stroll down that boat dock towards those Jamaicans using his slightly off accent and completely sell it. And I loved every minute of it! I also loved how later on when Michael is standing on the bridge with the money and the propane torch, he dumps the accent and speaks to both the Jamaicans *and* the dirty cops as himself, not Homer. *lol* I guess I feel like when Jeffrey Donovan uses the accents in a cheeky way, it's awesome. That last cover character was played with a serious tilt, it seemed and I found the accent jarring myself (serious, save for that fake shootout with Fiona, when she aims between his legs and he shoots her that look, lol).

Did anyone notice that his cover ID "Terry Miller" is also the name of one of the producers of the show? Jeff Freilich mentioned him in the interview. Wonder if Jimmy knew he was gonna be walking in with an Aussie?

Having grown up in the South, I realize there are a number of different variances on the accent. I can generally tell what part of the South that person is from but not always. We live in a mobile society so we pick up different colloquialisms and cadences in our speech. Mike's Homer was a bit twangy to me but it was, as was already mentioned by another poster, in jest. A really cheeky performance that I really enjoyed.

As far as Mikey's Aussie accent is concerned, I believe I mentioned in a previous post that I've worked with Aussie's before. I worked at a company that had a contract with the Australian navy and had a manager that was Aussie and a New Zealander manager. Being familiar with the accent doesn't make me an expert but I do believe his was quite good.

Yeah....except it wasn't. I love Jeffrey Donovan's acting, but in everything I have seen him in where he used an accent, he doesn't quite nail it.
You see, I am a linguist. I study accents. His was, as I said, inconsistent. He kept "code switching" as we call it. Some words had an Australian inflection, some had an East End of London inflection. It was inconsistent. Trust me. I have a master's degree in this. And good on ya for working with Austrailians, mate.

I didn't post my comments to argue with you. I couched my response with "I'm not an expert". Thanks for the information but in some cases ignorance IS bliss.

Hi Bubba here, I did get to see this again over the weekend. It was a great premiere. Thanks USA.
FloridaRealtor
Hey, all. I did get to sit down and see the episode straight through on Saturday and I watched a couple parts over again as it was repeated, like, four times. But I needed the repeats to take it all in! I thought it was really complicated -- solve the time in the trailer, get a new handler, get a new case, handle mom, handle Fi -- if Nate had showed up, my head would have burst. I've seen the phrase "over the top" used and I agree. Maybe it was to attract new viewers. Maybe I'm just old or lazy -- but I sort of want to say, "Don't try so hard."

And no shirtless scenes. I did notice that. mad.gif

Hey, Corribean, linquist is cool.

I love the fact that Jeffrey throws in accents, as he loves trying them out in different ways, but I know that in Come Early Morning he got the role due to the fact that he did do a southern accent slightly better than some original southerners and. At first in the opening of the new BN eppie. He started with what to me seemed like an English accent but with the MATE it turned to a pretty good Aussie accent. Having known former sports people who are Australian, I thought he did a great job, and yes, he does from time to time go between accents. That is because he really wants to do a good job with the accents and sometimes forgets because he gets caught up in thought and speech. It's a trademark, you can't mess with it. And besides, he always looks so adorable when things go slightly off kilter. smile.gif

And that is my UNWANTED two cents.
Laurel
My unwanted two cents: I didn't particularly like the Aussie accent; thought it was way over the top and unconvincing. dry.gif But not enough to think any less of JD or of the show! smile.gif

In regards to his southern accent being better than "original southerners", I wouldn't go that far. Assuming you are comparing his accent to people born and raised in the south, his accent wasn't a distraction and was at least credible. I have a hybrid accent. It turns southern when I'm in the south, otherwise most can't figure out where I'm from, not even southerners. So, you can simply sell it as someone with a vagabond background who happened to live in the south for a while. Now I'm not convinced that in this seasons opener, that the accent was an Aussie accent. Correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't his Terry Miller character work for a British company in South Africa? Could it be South African? Who knows? I assumed Aussie since Outback was the advertiser for the online episodes.

I finally got the season premiere downloaded to my Mac and made this animated gif of one of our favorite scenes:

It's cool how you did that.
I had wondered if anyone else caught that hose thingy or if it was just me reading too much into the imagery.

Also, Fi was in rare form in the season opener:

Love the cap of Mikey. As for South African. I know of a few people from there but it's hard to distinquish that accent from what Michael was using as I haven't heard it in a while. And yes, the accent was affected but I don't much care just so long as he keeps talking.... Anything to keep him on screen. He could stand in one spot for the entire hour cooing like a baby and I would still just sit and watch....
