I think the reason why he doesn't consider Eames as relationship material, is because their association is strictly professional ... nothing else. Eames is not part of his life outside of the workplace. I know I'll get shippers who beg to differ, but I call it as I see it. They're not romantic partners and not even friends. They simply work together, period. They rarely confide in each other about matters in their personal lives. What little they know about their partner's situation apart from the squad room is where it overlaps or impacts on their work. They have never been seen socializing after a case.
It's not unlike my own workplace. I genuinely like some of the folks I work with, too, but I would never dream of hanging out with any of them after I've left the premises. I keep my work life and my home life completely separate.

I can see where you are coming from on this, but I respectfully disagree. There are things that Bobby and Alex have done for each other that could go into the category of being at least friends. I mean, I like the people I work with, but I would never stay by their sides if one of them were in the hospital like Bobby did with Alex. Now you could counter that Bobby felt guilty which promoted his actions, but, to me, that action was promoted by feelings of true concern for a friend. Also, in Purgatory Alex mentions calling Bobby several times and wonders why he hasn't called her back. Granted, again these could be considered one work partner keeping the other posted about work. But when one of my co-workers is gone, I don't think about calling them. (Maybe I am just too cold-hearted and should worry that the thought doesn't cross my mind.
Now I know this show is fiction, so please take my next statement as if the show were to truly be happening - like it was a documentary of these cops lives. Sometimes things happen off screen on shows that they viewers never see. Just because Bobby and Alex are not shown hanging out, doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. Though I seem to go to either the X-Files or the Gilmore Girls as examples, I am going to again.
