At one time in the distance past we had a geography thread and we've also had a how our customs differ thread. I liked those threads but I guess we didn't have many history buffs playing on the board at the time.
I have to admit I don't know diddly about Finland...but, I can find it on a map.!!!!
Well, California is roughly the same size and shape, I guess, but if you put Helsinki on the border of Mexico (hot!), I live right about where Lapland starts (cold).
If takes nine hours for me to drive to either end of the state.
And I'm not sure the population, but it's the highest in all 50 states, and there are about 4 million people just in Los Angeles, not counting San Bernardino, Long Beach, Riverside, Compton, Downey, Industry, and the "Beach" cities... Or orange county, which is about as big again...
And there are probably 900,000 in San Francisco proper, plus suburbs all the way down to San Jose with about 2-3,000,000 total... Plus Oakland, Sacramento, Hayward, all the east-bay cities, all the north bay cities, San Diego, Bakersfield, El Centro...
In the South and inland, we have deserts; in the south on the coast we have the palm-trees that you see on TV, and as you go North towards San Francisco, it cools down. By the time you reach Eureka, at the north, by Oregon, it's rainy and there are forests of huge redwood trees. In the springtime, you can drive from mountains with snow for skiing to beaches with waves for surfing in a couple of hours. There are many different types of climate, all in one state. It is a wonderful place!
But way too many people...

And we don't swim in frozen lakes!
