It's based on the principle of being stranded in the desert (or any hot wilderness) and having no stove. If you take a steak and put in on your dashboard the greenhouse effect and the magnified light from the windshield will cook your steak in about 3 hours. That would actually work - and it's always a good idea to cook food since it lasts longer than raw food when there is no refrigeration.
So you season a steak and flop it on a skillet. Then you put baby carrots, special little round soup potatoes (they're made just for making soup), whole raw mushrooms, roughly ripped-up broccoli (in BIG pieces) and 1 can of corn - you throw it all on top of the steak. Set the stove for nearly it's lowest stetting and let it all sit for about 3 hours. The juices from the steak will leak out of it and cook the vedgetables while it boils.
To make it perfect, you really need a large cooking pot and about 5 cans of beef broth. Take the now very tender steak (this recipe is great if you have a cheap steak) and set it aside after 3 hours. Add enough beef broth to the vedgetables to make them all covered. Increase the heat until the broth boils and boil the vedgetables for about 12 minutes.
While the vedgetables are boiling, add 4 cans of beef broth to the large pot and set the stove to simmer. When the vedgetables are soft enough, add them to the pot with the hot broth. Cut up the steak in big (1" X 1") squares and throw them in the pot. Add garlic and plenty of black pepper to taste. Add cumin (secret ingredient).
Very tasty. The good stuff.
It feeds about 6. Serve with cheese or bread (as I just did - they loved it).
