UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - A massive fire raged on a back lot at Universal Studios early Sunday, devouring several movie sets, including mock New York and New England streets. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Oh my goodness! I am glad no one was injured.

My internet connection is PMSing so I risk getting bumped off again if I go hunting--does anyone know if Monk films at Universal? I thought they filmed at Paramount? I saw this article on Yahoo a half hour ago and got disconnected just trying to read the story. Anyone?

It says NBC Universal--I must be a dingbat. Where did I ever get the idea Monk filmed at Paramount?? Meds anyone?

It only says there were no immediate reports of injuries--that's promising but not conclusive. That could change. My fingers are crossed.
history08
I just saw on the news that a firefighter has been injured in the fire. It did not say the type of injury he sustained or the extent of the injury.

Yvette,

Paramount Studios is where Teresa and I went to watch them film Monk.

OMG...I'm gonna turn on the news.

There's probably only a small number of people working on Sunday. I hope no one was injured. unsure.gif

I think some Monk episodes were filmed at Universal. I remember reading that parts of Rapper and Garbage Strike were filmed there. I think the outside of Monk's apartment building when he is sitting on the step at the end of Stays In Bed and Garbage Strike is a Universal set. Teresa would know better.
It's very sad news but I guess sets and attractions can be rebuilt. I hope there will be no serious injuries or deaths associated with the fire.
alex455
I hope that nobody is going to be injured and that everything soon gets back to normal.
The decorations from "Back to the Future" and "War of the Worlds" are destroyed and it's a shame cuz i really like those movies...
Now os 300 firefighters fighting with the fire....

I just watch the news and they said three firefighters were injured. They didn't say how bad the injuries were though.

Yes, Teresa would know for sure. I recall they did film some at Universal studios.

They still do some occasional filming on the Universal backlot, but one of the reason's they moved to Paramount (from RenMar) at the beginning of season six was because the studio had a backlot of it's own that could accomodate them in most cases.

I'm sad to hear about the injured firefighters and that they lost quite a bit of film history. They've had a few fires on the Universal backlot. It seems like Courthouse Square and New York Street are particularly vulnerable. However, they're experts at rebuilding quickly.

Wow...I wonder how it got started?? I hope the 3 firefighters are ok.

So does this mean that the fire might affect the filming, or could the Monk guys do that where they are now, or find another backlot to film at?

I hope the three firefighters are okay. I hope this doesn't affect filming, or they can find somewhere else that will accomodate their needs.

Hi Bubba here, I hope the firefighters will be okay. Thoughts and prayers are with them.

Huge fire burns Universal movie sets

Of course...<deep sigh>

I am wondering what the future ramifications of this will be for Monk. I am hoping that maybe, since he apparently will be buying a new house in the first episode of season 7 that this won't be that big of a problem. (Hopefully the new digs didn't go!) But I am curious as to what street scenes/ 'buildings' that we've seen in Monk actually burned down.

There's always old street footage to use if they have to. I've seen other shows do that a lot...sometimes too much. (There was one show I used to watch, that whenever they showed the outside of a certain building, the same woman walked by in a yellow shirt.)

I think the pink/coral-colored building in the back was used as the exterior of Adrian's apartment building a couple of times. That's the Universal Studios Brownstone Street that was, I think, involved in the fire, along with New York & New England streets.

Oh, I heard about the fire, but I didn't think of Monk! ohmy.gif I hope everything will be o.k.

PS. Recently I've been so busy, you know-- school generally speaking. And I've still got a lot of work before me.

You know.. I can tr remember who said it - or in what thread, but we werer talking earlier in the year and someone said that they wished all his pictures of Trudy would go up in flames with his apartment so that he could move on.

...

Now I'm not pointin fingers - as I cant recall who to point to - but are we sure we're not talking disgruntled fan here?

Of course we're not. Dont be silly.. This is how rumors get started.

And fire chiefs get called.

And Monk gets moved... without his... pictures...

Hmmmm...

I hope the firemen are all right.

I have an airtight alibi.

Yes, it was me. I mean who made the comment, and not the fire.

I only start fictional fires that burn fictional buildings and hurt fictional firemen --really.

At least that's what I keep telling myself.

But I've still got this bad karma feeling going on.

Edited to add: I have heard the injuries were minor. And my motives for starting the fictional fire weren't exactly that cold blooded. I was going to give him new copies of all of the photos from his mother-in-law, along with some good advice about what to do with them. (His mother-in-law was a grief counselor.)

All I wanted to do was see what he would do if his shrine to Trudy was disassembled. Would he reconstruct it? Or would he deal with the photos and the memories in a more healthful manner?

And after a few deep breaths and some good advice, I feel better about this.

I wouldnt feel any bad Karma if I were you. Your ideas came from the collective unconscious. Strait from the reason that life and art imitiate each other. All you could be guilty of is noticing the idea out there in the ether.

And since when are any of us on trial for dreaming or speaking our mind anyway?

...

<saucy smirk> I'd just like it if they got you off the suspect list early is all. laugh.gif

I can be placed in Buffalo at the time the fire was started, and uh... all the recent hits from my computer on arson investigation web sites?

They can be attributed to research for my story.

Has anyone checked out Dale the Whale yet? unsure.gif I think he did it.

I think you may be right. Dale the Whale said he would get Adrian when he least expects it!

I did see some of the damage on Access Hollywood! Pretty impressive! I am glad that the video vault had dupicates! I would hate to lose all those great films! But they said they are going to rebuild bigger and badder! We will see!

Dale the Whale may work for somebody else too...maybe Dale has a boss...and this boss is the Judge...that's possible right?
But anyway we'll wait we'll see....only month and new season...
Is it July yet?

And the judge would then be a nototorious entertainment critic who deliberately burned the vaults to destroy the bad footage, the sets so that they would build better ones, and killed Trudy to spark the idea for what is undoubtably the best detective show of all time????

Works for me.
