Yes, I have seen Wings on TVLand during the week, but it comes on at a time when I am leaving for school, so it is hard for me to watch. I am VERY excited about getting to see Wings...well, Tony!

Cool! Thanks for the info! I'm gonna go set my TiVo right now!

Humbled but frantic request to USA--PLEASE DON'T STEP ON THE ENDINGS!!

Only the very early episodes end with only credits rolling. The later episodes have additional SCENES and DIALOGUE, which I have yet to see because of the boneheads at TVLand. The only way to see them is to get your hands on the DVDs.

I got some lame excuse that people switch channels on credits unless there's a Big 40 promo running, at which time they smash the ending of Wings up against the side of the screen and MUTE the sound.

I had no luck convincing those boneheads that additional scenes with dialogue are CONTENT, not credits. I have a sneaking suspicion that networks started adding additional scenes and bloopers at the ends of the shows to battle the very problem that idiot told me about--to keep people from switching channels. Promos are commercials--they're fooling no one, and people only switch channels if they have no interest in seeing what you're showing next. No other reason. NOBODY stays tuned to a channel in order to watch commercials. If twaddle's coming on next, I change the channel. So does every other person I know.

Please let the shows play all the way out!!

Yes, you're absolutely right. That is so annoying. I don't necessarily like it with any show, but with Wings it is particularly bad. I can see, in that little corner they allow me, that something, sometimes something that looks really funny, is happening in those end credits, but I can barely see it and I can't hear it. That is the most frustrating thing.

I know that in the famous (infamous?) episode where Antonio dances with Roy there was another dance sequence in those final moments. It would have been nice to see that clearly.

Put me on your petition, Yvette.

Can we start a petition because this really urks me !!! I can't stand when they do that. I am a fan of wings and I know exactly what you mean. They usually have a good ending and I miss it every time because of that. I hope that USA doesn't do that to us.

Ok I am watching this now and really cannot believe how much the acting and writing were pretty much the same as the show aged. Which is a refreshing b/c sometimes the writers change paces or something else like that happens.

Once again sign me up. I will agree they need to present the show as it was originally broadcast.

Cannot wait til the epis with Tony!!! rolleyes.gif

Humble but frantic request to USA—PLEASE DO NOT STEP ON THE SHOWS' ENDINGS!!

TVLand has been airing Wings—NONE of the endings of which I've ever seen—they step all over them. The only way to see the endings is to get your hands on the DVDs.

Only the early episodes of this show end with only credits rolling. The later ones have additional scenes and dialogue! Additional scenes and dialogue are content—not credits. Nick at Nite does this too—it drives me up a wall!

I had this same conversation with the morons at TVLand and was told that they spent all kinds of money testing why people switch channels during the credits.

They concluded that people don't switch channels because they don't want to see what they're showing next (I know, defies logic) but rather because they're not rolling another Big 40 promo. What????

So to keep you glued to your screen, they smash the ending scenes of Wings and other shows up against the right side of the screen and mute the sound. Apparently, if they show Big 40 promos, you're mesmerized and simply cannot change the channel. What a bunch of waterheads. In-house promos are commercials—they're fooling no one. No one stays glued to a channel in order to watch the commercials play out. No one. Not a single human being on earth. It doesn't happen. Not even as a joke.

If viewers want to see the next program you have scheduled, they leave the station on and go make a sandwich during the commercials. This isn't a guarded military secret. It's not sealed in a classified dossier locked in a vault in Zurich, along with the launch codes and Fidel Castro's cell number. Everyone who DOESN'T work in TV knows this.

The specific idiot I had on the line couldn't understand why I failed to consider additional scenes and dialogue as being credits. Well, because there's something to watch there. It's not just credits rolling. I don't care if they step on credits—they always roll faster than the human eye can read them, and since they always play the theme music there, you're not missing anything when they mute the sound. If the show has put their own credits on the side or bottom of the screen and then added scenes or bloopers, then it's no longer an issue of credits—the show is still going on. That is content!

I also suggested that perhaps networks began running additional scenes and bloopers at the ends of shows specifically in order to remedy the problem he mentioned. He had a great deal of difficulty processing the logic there.

If you don't want to tick off your viewers and you don't want anyone changing the channel before the show has ended, let the endings play out. Please….for the love of God, let the shows play out!

Well, Wings is not on TV Land any more, as of this morning. I guess I will have to try to catch in on USA, but the timing is not as convenient for me. I was getting used to enjoying Wings daily with my morning coffee.

I think they're really just trying to get me to buy the DVD's. How much disposable income do they think I have?

Yes, I think you're right. Before that, he played a waiter in a Valentine's Day-type of episode called.....(looking it up).......okay, I can't remember the name of the episode, but, I think the scene goes like this:

Joe and Helen were to meet at some fancy Italian restaurant for Valentine's Day. Joe never shows (can't remember how) and Helen is alone at the table waiting for him. Antonio (but I don't think that was his name in this episode) is the waiter and he's trying to make Helen feel better. Okay this may not be totally accurate as I haven't seen the episode in a while.

By the way, Yvette, can I join the petition?? I absolutely HATE it when networks do this! The Love Overboard episode when Antonio and Roy are dancing at the end, I can sort of see what is going on, but would love to see it bigger. Also, the episode when Antonio is in love with his cousin's fiance (called "Et Tu Antonio"). His cousin is huge on leather and at the very end, you can see Antonio trying on these really tight leather pants. He flips over onto the bed trying to put them on. I would have loved to have seen that bigger, too.

Also, thanks USA! I noticed TV Land has stopped showing Wings. They now have Designing Women in the time slot and Wings is nowhere to be found, which made me mad. But now I'm happy that it's on another channel. Maybe it's because Tony's in it???? Hey, any chance they can show "Stark Raving Mad" - I've never seen it and am curious how it was now that I'm a big fan of Tony's!
yvette88
Tony's first episode on this show was "Looking For Love In All The Wrong Place," as they said above. It's scheduled to air on the 18th, and it's on at 6:30am, at least in my part of the country. So, if they're going in order, you won't get your Antonio Scarpacci fix until June 18th.

I have to add that I'm watching "The Lady Vanishes." Besides the dancing episode, this is the most hilarious Antonio episode I've ever seen. I can't stop laughing.
yvette88
For anyone keeping track, that does seem to be Tony's first Wings episode. It looks like he doesn't show up regularly until season three--correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like he doesn't appear again until "Naked Truth," first episode of that season. We're watching Tony-less episodes right now but at least we have Lowell. smile.gif

Added: As a matter of interest, that's five Tony-less episodes in between.

Just curious..I haven't followed Tony Shalhoub's career but, is that his natural accent or is he just doing it for the show. It caught me completely off guard when I heard him this morning.

His natural accent is not the Italian accent he uses for Antonio. Monk is his real accent.

That's correct. The Italian accent is fake. He's another actor who's very good with accents. I'd guess that Alan Rickman is the only actor that's maybe just a little better than Tony. While it's difficult for Americans to imitate an English accent, it's been said it's more difficult for the English to imitate an American accent. Alan pulled that off convincingly in a scene from Die Hard. He's done southern American accents in Something the Lord Made and in one of his cop movies whose title escapes me at the moment--it was a cop movie he did with Emma Thompson. Alan's also done an Irish accent in Michael Collins, as well a slew of other accents in other movies. I felt he was very convincing as the Russian, Grigori Rasputin. He's just very versatile with respect to accents. Tony's a very close second. It's a skill that's likely a very attractive asset to casting directors. His natural accent is general American, with subtle regional aspects that would be specific to anyone who was born and raised in Wisconsin.

This may be a dumb question, but I've always been fascinated by accents. How would you describe a Wisconsin-y accent? I know it's New Yahk and Bahstin, but how do people in the midwest like Wisconsin talk. Perhaps Raven can help me (I think she's the one from Wisconsin). I mean, when people from that area hear Tony talk, can they hear some sort of Wisconsin-y accent? I know, I know, dumb question, but I'm really curious.

By the way, Tony is fabulous with accents! He also had an Italian accent in Cars. I didn't realize it was him until I started watching Wings, then when I heard Antonio, I was like "hey, that's sounds like Luigi." He also had a Russian accent in Paulie (which is a movie I would like to see). He's just so versatile, it's amazing!

Oh, Yvette -- you brought back one of the funniest things about watching old British shows. There was one episode of The Avengers where one of the characters was supposed to be an American, and I could tell he wasn't supposed to be British, but his accent ended up being part Southern, part Brooklyn, and part Humphrey Bogart. There also may have been a little John Wayne mixed in. laugh.gif It was the funniest thing. Unintentional humor is the best.

I have not the slightest clue. rofl. Some regional accents are more subtle than the ones we're all familiar with, like southern accents, new york, and boston. Supposedly we all have have some kind of regional accent. With respect to Wisconsin, you'd have to ask a Wisconsinian. rofl. If I had to, I wouldn't be able to pick it out of a lineup. I never thought I had an accent being from Ohio but once I moved to NJ and then being stationed in CA, and finally ending up in PA, it's pointed out to me all the time.

Rofl!! People also forget that Britain also has it's own set of regional dialects. All british accents are not created equal. Other british people can tell where in the country a particular English person is from just by hearing them speak. It's the same here to a great extent. I love some of those British shows. Are You Being Served, Black Adder, and Fawlty Towers. Hilarious.

You are from the Cleveland area right? I am from Dayton. But everyone else in my family is Southern so we definitely have accents. It's my theory that everyone has an accent. I liked Tony's accent on Wings.

If I am not mistaking, the episode you are talking about, "Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places", Tony plays a waiter in Pontorelli's Restaurant. Later in the series, the part of Antonio is changed to be a taxi driver. I think this is right.

The end credits list his character as Antonio (just the first name, no second name) and yes, that was his first appearance. I need to see his second appearance to see how they transition him from being a waiter to being a cab driver who spends a lot of his subsequent time at the airport. It's been so long since I've seen any of these episodes. I also don't know at what point they begin having him in all the episodes. I think it took a little while before it occurred to them that this was a good character to add. And they're showing those episodes right now with that pilot who's also a kid and in high school--whatever, that character sucks. For me to watch an episode of Wings, it has to have either Antonio or Lowell in it, preferrably both.

Oh, two parts make me LOL out loud:

~ When he brings his cousin Giacomo to be Helen's date and Giacomo isn't speaking any Italian but you can tell he's talking about her breasts and stuff. Antonio kicks him out, Helen asks what he was saying and he replies "he says you're nice."

~ When Giacomo says "coffee....break," Antonio looks so pleased "his first words of English." He then proceeds towards Giacomo, like he's about to kiss him, but then pushes him away. He also tries to kick him, it's so funny.

Yvette - I remember watching his second episode (well, first as Antonio, the taxi driver) and they don't mention any transition. It's like he just, poofed, arrived. I think his next episode is called "the taming of the shrew," when Helen blows flour on his face. When you watch it, watch his face. When he turns to the camera with the flour on, it looks like he's trying really hard not to laugh.
yvette88

Hey Hello,
I've been out for a while but, now I'm happy to come back. And anxious, of course, as everybody else.
Well, I'd really like to have The Wings on DVD. I have seen some parts of it on the internet only, and most of them are with Tony. Every time I watch a new video about it I get more surprised about Tony's acting abilities. He really did an incredible job on this show! What a great actor he is! I just can't understand why he wasn't fully recognized sooner, before Monk. I mean, having more chances to show his talent to a bigger public, like other famous actors, who, sometimes, are just famous bacause of their young pretty faces.
Tony for president!! Ah! laugh.gif

If you decide to buy Wings on DVD, Tony is not in season one, and he's only in one episode in all of season two. In season three, he doesn't start until Is That a Subpoena in Your Pocket? so there is one episode he isn't in. If you want the episodes with Antonio, you want to start with season three. According to the list copied from IMDb above, he doesn't start until Taming of the Shrew, but my season 3 DVD just came today from netflix and Tony is also in Is That a Subpoena in Your Pocket. This appears to be the first episode as a cab driver and he makes passing mention of having just worked in a restaurant. Drivers will often set up cab stands at airports and bus stations so I'm guessing they switched him from waiter to cab driver so that he could be at the airport as often as they needed. Antonio tells a story about being a waiter, and a customer choking on a chicken bone whose widow sues the restaurant. "Do you remember that restaurant I used to work in?" so it's quick. If you blink, you miss it. lol. This looks like Antonio's first regular episode, so it looks like there's only one episode in season 3 that is completely Antonio-less.

Edited to correct IMDb's error.

Okay, that answers my question about whether that was Antonio or a pre-Antonio appearance. He must have made some impression on them to go from a one-time character to a regular. It would be interesting to find some history on how all that came about.
