Remember when Mr Monk used to play the clarinet?

That's what I miss. How 'bout everyone else?
Raven
I miss Adrian seeing and talking to Trudy.
strike14
as much as I like Natalie would have liked to see Sharona in Mr Monk on the run Part II. I know she ended the show on a sour note but it would have been nice if his old assitsant and his new assitant teamed up to save monk.

In an older online chat, not the most recent one, someone asked if he really played the clarinet on the show and he said yes. He, too, wondered why the writers hadn't written any more clarinet playings and joked that maybe the reason is they heard him play.

Hopefully this link works where he explains it.

I wonder if Julie's figured out that it's not the original "Mr. Henry". You'd think she'd have known by episode one. I think she was just playing dumb because she didn't want her mom to think it wasn't the same fish...

I miss Adrian's conversations with Trudy (and flashbacks), I miss him playing the clarinet, and I miss Ambrose!

I love the line in the pilot toward the middle where Adrian is standing by Trudy's grave playing the clarinet and Sharona walks up and says "I'm sure she heard you." That was sweet.

I laugh even harder when Disher says, "Not even once." I think I missed it the first couple of times because I was so busy laughing at what the captain said. When that wore off, I heard a whole new funny line -- the multiple layers of Monk -- you get something new every time you watch.

The things I miss on Monk: (not necessarily in order of importance to me)

Willie Nelson
Monk playing clarinet
Randy with his shirt off
Stottlemeyer singing (Oh, c'mon, you knew I was gonna say that!!)
HONDO(?) (the stripper in Wedding)
We never got to actually see Stottlemeyer without his jeans on (In Vegas)
Varla Davis
Tommy, the kid
Trudy appearing to Adrian

I miss these things too. I really hope Ambrose will be on again. Lots of Trudy would be nice too. Maybe for the 100th episode we will get some great surprises.

I heard Tony say on a talk show that he does read the boards.

Oh, totally. And the look on thier faces. Especially Randy. He was a deer and a semi was bearing down. I cant think about thier expressions without laughing. The capt. was trying to be so cool about it, but Disher was just flattened. It was almost as though you could see the list of people they told about the film running through thier heads or something.

And I could watch that scene over and over myself MJ. No doubt.

P.S. - Meme, Yes! Varla! I would LOVE to see her come to Monk with a problem. She could come back any day of the week as far as I'm concerned. I even wrote her in to my one and only public Monk fanfiction. I had to. She's gone to waste!

A few other things I thought of:

1) Tommy (God, I love that episode!!!!)
2) Ambrose
3) Brooke Adams (it's been too long...she needs to do another guest appearance!)

BTW, I thought of this while typing Brooke's name. Remember the "Visits a Farm" episode and at the end she smacks Adrian's butt and he had the most aghast look on his face? I wonder how long she rubbed that in that she got to smack Tony's butt on TV? biggrin.gif

ROFLOL. Varla was a real character! She was never going to get along with Monk but I think she gained some respect for "Kojak" even in the few hours she spent with him. I would like to see her again.

Varla was so funny. Isn't this actress the same that had a part in 13Ghosts, together wth Tony?

More things:
1. Monk saying "unless I'm wrong...which... you know...I'm not..."
2. Monk's smart smile to Sharona (or Natalie) when solved a case.

Things I don't want to see anymore:
1. The Captain's angry look to Monk when he solves a case
2. Natalie saying she's cute dry.gif
3. Monk trying to be cool and getting everyone around to laugh at him (just hate that, not funny at all)
strike14
kind of missing the what the heck he used to do with Sharona from time to time when someone said something crazy.

Monk putting the beatdown on people was kind of nice as well.

However don't like Mr Monk being turn to rambo shooting santas and stuff.

Ooooo... You're right. That's a good one. Top ten material - in a serious way.

Monk wanting to fit in and not being able to. It was heartbreaking on more than one occasion.

The office crew upset me on that note - and before that - the fellow police who he couldnt talk sports with even though he brought his notecards.

<shakes head>

"Anybody want to hear some swear words?"

That line just kills me. He wanted to chat and be 'normal' soooo badly - and it went... just as badly.

That scene almost makes me feel as bad as when The Monk opens his eyes in the pool and he's alone.
And that pool scene is one of the hardest, if not THE hardest, for me to watch in the entire series so far. So being second to that is REALLY bad in my eyes.

I'd have to say that this is probably one of the WORST aspects of the shows mythology. Not character wise - because it does a lot to define him.

But somehow I would rather see Monk in peril or physically hurt than being the outcast, his nose to the glass, looking in.

I think this aspect of Monk's character is painful to most of us because of our own shame of being in this situation and our own fear of being that guy.

My point is that the writers of Monk tell the truth when they show this side of his experience. Its a truth that resonates with most of us.

It is part of the human condition that is rarely portrayed in our society where we all pretend to be whole. (I'm okay - you're okay is just blowing smoke- its buying into a myth created by advertisement and marketing.) Most of TV has us looking through the window watching a world that we are all supposed to have, but don't. "High School the Musical I and II". Its very entertaining but so far from the realitly that most of us experience. There are countless examples.

When we look at Adrian's awkward interactions with people we see ourselves - and if we think about it too much, we recognize that we are in pain, too. We know how intelligent he is, how much he would have to offer other people and yet he is very isolated. It is just excruciating to care about him and watch him out there on a limb with no net. But we have all been on that limb.

I would also like to say, that this is part of the genius of those Monk writers. They tell the truth about human experience.

He did shoot someone in the first episode, right? In the sewers to save Sharona? So that's not really a change in character at all, it's just an under-used aspect of his character.

I can see where if he shot every bad guy he ran in to it would get old though.

Oh, and strike14 - Yeah, The Monk wasnt someone I would hang around with, but in that pool scene, it's like Monk comes back as The Monk vanishes and the Monk we know and love gets stuck with all the baggage and humiliation of the entire episode.

I've said before - it's almost like I can read it on his face and he's saying "It's not my fears or phobias that alienate me from people... It's just me."

And that ALWAYS hurts me. Every time I see it. Because, even with a possibly high frustration level, Monk IS someone I would want to hang around with.

Some very truthful stuff here, Monkophile1,

But can I add, it's a very empowering thing when we take our faces away from the glass that separates us from what we think is reality, and start having our own parties on this side of the glass.

Look out world! I have just as much right to be "in the pool" as anybody else, so they are going to have to learn to deal with it. I have learned to be me, and that "me" is an okay thing to be.

I hope that Monk can learn that too.

This is some pretty heavy stuff you are exploring - the universal theme of the tragic image in Monk .

Yes, you are right, I think, to say that Monk may personify certain melancholic aspects of the human condition but more than just merely emphathizing with him because we have all partaken of those situations, we also feel sympathy for him because we have experienced what he knows he is missing and longs for while our continuing to want to see the show may not simply be due to the entertainment value of putting on display the manifestation of his many phobias but because of the hope we have that someday he may be able again to want to feel the joy of being touched both physically and emotionally by someone.

To be honest, I don't think the Cap was upset because Monk cases, I think the Cap was upset because people (over his head) were calling Monk in on his cases. (I could be wrong but that's how I used to see it. I did like the change, mid Sharona 3.5 when The Cap and Monk were buddies, tho.)

Don't remember Monk apologizing for solving a case. I'll have to take your word for that.

Randy acting superior to Monk, I believe was Randy, uh...brain freeze - misreading the situation. His first impression of Monk, of course was "The Defective Detective", and any other reaction was supporting the Captain and maybe believing the hype about Monk. Once Randy got to know Monk he started to care about him and knew him instead of "the rumors".

I guess I see it this way because at one point over the holidays (a couple years ago), the boss of my company saw that I still had a lot of work on my desk (now, keep in mind, this is the top guy, not my supervisor) and he took up a great handful of work and walked over and plopped it onto another co-worker desk. My co-worker's only responsibility was to answer phones, while I did that and a whole lot of other tasks. I ended up resenting both of them (I actually excused myself to cry like a baby in the restroom - I was pretty new on the job) and thought that that situation was handled badly. It was mostly handled badly on my bosses part - he could've asked me if I needed help or talked to my supervisor or whatever. Instead he chose to show me how incompetent I was at my job and have someone else "help me out." (DEEP BREATH) but like I said. That was a couple of years ago, and I've got a new job. I'm not bitter.

In The Candidate, Monk saved Sharona`s life by shooting the bad guy. In Stuck in Traffic, Monk saved Natalie`s life by shooting out the hydrolic sp? system. In Monk Can`t see a Thing he saved Leland and his own life. In the Santa shooting, he saved his own life. I think he should at least, have a gun handy. I almost forgot, in Mr. Monk takes his Medicine, he held off the bad guy with a water pistol. The guard would have been killed if not for this, it gave Leland just enough time to get to the scene with a real gun. My Nephew is a cop, you have to know how to shoot. smile.gif

Ok, so there is more good to come out of Monk having a gun than I had originally thought. When I posted I could only think of the "bad" that has come out. I have seen all of those episodes, but for whatever reason was not thinking about them. I forgot about the gun episodes in those episodes....Sorry. smile.gif
