Now that I have become a recent fan.... I am curious as to how popular this show was when it first aired. I now it was cancelled after the first season by NBC and picked up by CBS.... but how popular was it and how was the ratings?

Does anyone know... I tried searching for fansites to inquiry but there seems to be no current postings.

I looked around for you, but didn't find anything major.

I did find this though, ...

JAG (the American Military acronym for Judge Advocate General) is an American adventure and drama television show, that was produced by Belisarius Productions, in association with Paramount Network Television. Originally conceived as Top Gun meets A Few Good Men, JAG was first aired on NBC in 1995, but later canceled in 1996 after finishing 77th in the ratings. With a network change, rival network CBS picked up the series and aired it for nine additional seasons until April 2005.

They used to post the ratings every week when the new episodes aired, in a certain thread but that was years ago so i don't quite remember.

"Ratings" determine how much advertisers pay and are subject to manipulation . . . however . . .
Season 1 1995 NBC Saturdays 23Sep1995 - 03Feb1996; Wednesdays 13Mar1996 - 22May1996 Rank 77
Season 2 1996 CBS Fridays 03Jan1997 - 18Apr1997 Rank 62
Season 3 1997 CBS Tuesdays Rank 36
Season 4 1998 CBS Tuesdays Rank 17
Season 5 1999 CBS Tuesdays Rank 23
Season 6 2000 CBS Tuesdays Rank 26
Season 7 2001 CBS Tuesdays Rank 12
Season 8 2002 CBS Tuesdays Rank 17
Season 9 2003 CBS Fridays Rank 37
Season 10 2004 CBS Fridays Rank 49

It's interesting to me that the ratings dropped when they moved to Friday. That was a big problem for me. I had gotten so used to always watching on Tuesdays and I had trouble remembering on Friday. No DVR back then to make life easy. That's why I love the USA reruns. I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I really wish they would air in order. I want to make sure I've seen them all.

I'm sorry that I don't have a precise answer to, "Why?"
DPB knew that DJE was getting burned-out and that writers were a bit tired of writing new twists on past themes.
Moving JAG from T (high viewer night = higher advertiser demands) to F (less demands) gave us seasons 9&10.
If you ask KatRose (http://forums.usanetwork.com/index.php?act=Search&nav=au&CODE=show&searchid=2f2472eac20530bc36bb8134ab5c505a&search_in=posts&result_type=posts), she can give us an authoritative answer about why JAG was moved T > F and why USA must show JAG eps out-of-order.
