Update/May 5, 2008 -
Reported shooting schedule for the new 'Starter Wife' series is a start date of May 20th and finish lensing on Sept. 12th. This info from a person's blog on the web (she got a job with the Starter Wife production) and needs to be in LA in 15 days for filming in West LA and Culver City. So no Australian locales doubling for LA/Malibu this time around.

You mean go back to Australia to film? That would've been nice for all the Aussie actors who were in the miniseries, but Debra Messing would only agree to do the series if it was shot in LA this time. She didn't want to uproot her family for another 4 months and live Down Under.

i guess Family is everything, although Down Under is pretty cool, who's cares. Why did they shoot in Aus instead of LA in the first place

Simply a matter of dollars. It is cheaper to film in Australia than the US.
