This is something I'm struggling with right now, but I've got a feeling that if the past is any sort of guide for me, things will present themselves to help me ultimately discern the right choice.

I recently got a very unexpected call offering a job (for my 'residency' or 'internship') while waiting on a response from a place I had just interviewed. Unbeknown to me, 20 mins before I got that call en email had been sent telling me I didn't get the one I had interviewed for. I spent about an hour toiling over which I would take if I got offered the other, then discovered the email. Choice made.

I'm just starting to realize that my diverse college education up to this point (talk about a true hodgepodge of courses, educational experiences, and professional endeavors...I'm very....Shawnesque in that regard...) and the path I'm on now could very well lead me in a direction I never expected...

...but I'm mulling over the idea of seeking certification as a special-education teacher. The idea of working with kids with special needs, finding ways to excite them about things like earth science and physical science, and even math...to show them that they can do it -- to show others that, too...I just, kinda outta nowhere, find that thought very inspiring and exciting.

Glad to know I'm not just in my own little world where things sound like a good idea to me...though that does happen a lot sometimes. dry.gif

It probably sounds odd, but I don't think I could teach "mainstream" students (though I hate that kinda terminology....), but I could totally see myself working with kids who have been identified with a variety of special needs.

...oh, and I can see myself taking the win, too. wink.gif

That's a very difficult, yet rewarding field. I work with kids with hearing loss (sometimes, sometimes it's adults with hearing loss, depends on my clinic...) and some of them can be multiply involved (about 40% of kids with hearing loss have co-morbidites). I also worked for a few months as a substitute paraprofessional in a school district, often working as a one-on-one aide with mainstreamed kids in their classroom. I enjoy it, but couldn't imagine doing it day in and day out for years (which is one of the reasons I'm currently torn between wanting to eventually work in pediatrics or adults in my area.)

I also have always wanted to teach, but have come to the decision that for me 'teaching' will be eventually down the road, in a college or university... teaching my profession to upcoming audiologists (and taking would-be speech pathologists and 'showing them the light' if it is right for them--it was for me.)

Best of luck on the decision making... as I said, life has a funny way of presenting opportunities to you and helping you make the right decision. Hopefully your intended path becomes clear to you, like mine so recently did for me (truly, I was given a job offer for a job I had inquired about, but didn't apply for.)

That's just a wonderful thing indeed. Congrats on that. smile.gif And thank you for the good wishes. I just look at some of the experiences I've had, and it saddens me to think that there are some kids out there whom people think wouldn't be able to excel in similar situations. I've always hated to see people be marginalized for any reason, but especially because of physical, developmental, or learning challenges.

Those have been going around something fierce on Facebook lately. I finally gave in and did one because I was tired of getting notification after notification about being tagged in one.

That's fantastic...best of luck to her! smile.gif I'm going to give this a lot of thought, but it's definitely something I'm thinking about pursuing. So many states have started initiatives to enable mid-career professionals to change direction and to use their experience to teach others. My academic degrees to this point don't directly translate to teaching anything specific, but in a lot of states, I'd qualify to teach special education...and as luck would have it, I think that's where I'd feel the most rewarded, too. Whatever I end up doing, though, I definitely see myself volunteering to help kids, even if I don't end up in the classroom. smile.gif

Random facts about me:
One, it's my birthday today, which automatically makes me a winner!

And, Two: I'm a nationally published writer. Don't laugh! I got my name published in the TV Guide Fall Preview issue in 2007, and TV Guide is a national publication, and I wrote the letter, ergo, nationally published writer. smile.gif
(Okay, the truth is out: my fannish loyalty is divided between Psych and Eureka.)

Firstly, happy birthday! smile.gif Secondly...that's awesome! I'm a former journalist, and I remember how good it felt the first time I saw my name and work in print...heck, truth be told, I always got a little twinge of excitement every time I saw my name and work in print, whether in a local paper or a national magazine, even after years of doing it. smile.gif

And even though your birthday does automatically make you a winner, I'm afraid that I must claim this particular win. Hey, give me something, at least...it's not my birthday and I'm up to my eyeballs in a research proposal. dry.gif

Happy Birthday! Unfortunately, that's such an amazing thing, I can't in good conscious let you have both the amazingness of being a birthday girl and holding this win.

Second, I enjoy Eureka! Very unique and quirky show that I finally tapped into fairly late in the game (thank God for TV on DVD and NetFlicks). Great little published piece there! I once had something accepted to be published in a creative writing publication... but was in high school and too cheap to pay for a copy for myself (seriously, I think it would have cost me $1).

I always hated trying to figure out curriculums and requisites, thank goodness it is pretty clear-cut for my program (and all laid out in a nice, easy to read table... as is: These are the classes you will take each semester.)

Yes, they film from the end of April until about the middle-ish of October. They usually start in the middle of April, but with the strike it was pushed back til about the 29th if I remember correctly. They finished filming on October 11th. So they've been done for about three months already. They'll be back up in Vancouver in April sometime, as usual to begin season four.

Did I mention that I really really really love Psych, and know basically everything about it...including their filming schedule? That's not crazy right? laugh.gif

LOL, I'm really only a fan of Monk and Psych (as far as USA programming goes), but I also try not to become attached to new cable programming, given my lack of cable... as well as very little free time and multiple other shows that I watch as it is...

LOL, I am a TV junkie, but fairly equal opportunity. NBC, ABC, FOX, SciFi, USA, Discovery... there'd be more if I had cable and DVR (for example, TLC has a show or two I'd catch if I had it).

I'm a bit more "average" I guess... often liking the shows that some love to hate..

Lets see, currently my list goes something like: Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, House, 2 and a Half Men, American Idol, Lost, Bones, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Flashpoint, Numb3rs, Psych, Monk, New Adventures of Old Christine, Rules of Engagement, CSI, ER (just this final season), Criminal Minds,

Also, when they're on: Eureka, Survivor, Mythbusters, Top Chef, Project Runway, Stargate Atlantis (if it hasn't ended yet), Dancing with the Stars... Eli Stones was great...

There's probably a few others that I'll either never admit to (really stupid reality stuff) or that I've forgotten... but yeah, TV junkie here
