The bones in the pelvis are the ilium, the ischium, and the pubis, although they are generally fused in adults. Kind of how a baby has several skull bones, but they fuse into one as the child grows.

Ah yes...those of us with Mexican heritage definitely feel the effects on our height...or lack thereof, lol. I like to say I'm 5'2" on a good day. My daughter's lucky that she seems to have inherited her height genes from her 6'2" Irish daddy. But my son...my poor son, lol. He's gonna be feeling James' pain.

I knew that James isn't very tall! And he's clearly shorter than Dulé by quite a bit. Doesn't matter though, he's still awesome wink.gif
sarcasmlove
Yeah, you could always tell that he was shorter than Dulé. I am half Mexican and I'm 5'7", which I suppose is a pretty decent height for a woman. Two of my brothers are about 6 feet, but one of them is only like 5'8", my sister is 5'2". Let's just say there aren't any pro basketball players in this family, lol.

And yes, James is awesome. I very much so love promo season because of all the amazing interviews he does.

Wow, you're a good height! It's about what I'd like to think my daughter will reach. My mom is very short, my dad is very tall though, but he's mixed heritage too...guess there's just not much room for middle ground with us. And no pro basketball players in my family either wink.gif

Okay folks! Lots of interviewing of Roday dude (and I love it...bring it!). A friend of mine is a professional writer in London and one of his assignments was to interview Dude for Psych Season 1 DVD. The interview was done but never published. My friend sent it to me this week and said it was okay to share since it has not seen the light of day. smile.gif

Now this is an old interview and my friend abbreviated his own questions to Roday but you can figure out what he asked from Roday's answers.

My friend's name is Paul Spragg and he used to write and serve as editor for Cult Times Magazine back in the day.

Okay, here you go. And sorry for another long post (did two today). I'll give you all a break after this. biggrin.gif

Oh - my fav part is Roday talking about "looking young". biggrin.gif

***********************

Drew you to Psych?
Well, truth be told it took some prodding, I've done some pretty lousy American television in my early career and I think I'd gotten a little bit jaded that no matter how good a script was it generally got ruined somewhere between finishing reading it and it airing on the network and it took my representatives pleading that I really did need to take this seriously and give it a chance because they really did think that it could be a great outlet for me to do what I enjoy doing most and I'm glad that I ultimately listened to them because it's worked out pretty well.

Not entirely seriously
No! And I think that's what got me over that line, was meeting with the guy who created the show and realizing that he is an eight year old trapped in the giant body of a 38-year-old and that that was going to reflect what this experience was gonna be, which is completely different than all the other experiences that I've had.

Still the same
Well, we have thsi sort of model of a procedural, which as long as we semi-stick to this idea that every week there will be a case, it's solved by the end, we can do all the other silly stuff we do around that. And I think the biggest difference between season one and season two is, and you can look at this as a positive or a negative, I suppose, I think we got less and less concerned with how good those cases actually were and more and more indulgent with all of the silly stuff that we were doing around them. But I think that was something that needed to happen just so we could do more character stuff and getting to know these people a little bit better and understand why they are the way that they are. My guess is that after doing season one, which I thought was pretty heavily case-related and season two, which was less so, we'll try to strike a ba;ance between the two for season three.

Underway?
We got a little bit of a stay of execution because of the Writers' Strike over here, so we would usually be in production already and now we go back in about two weeks. But some of the early episodes have been locked and again we'll be going into the past a little bit and right off the bat finding out some stuff about these characters in high school and stuff like that. You know, we're doing what every series tries to do once you have a little bit of success, which is try to tease the fans a little bit and give them some stuff that they may not be expecting.

Eighties clothes
You can't go wrong with that, man! Especially with our fanbase. We've got a lot of people out there that grew up during the Eighties and those jokes are just not lost on them. And it's always the first thing that we go to as well so it's worked out pretty well in that sense.

I'm your age.
That's fantastic.

Audition
It was pretty quick once I was on board. I think the first time I went in for them my hair was down to my shoulders and I had a beard, so they had to get over the shock of their main guy looking like David Koresh, but after that, once I cleaned myself up and got on the same page as Steve and we talked about what this show was and what it was going to entail and what I could expect, I was pretty jazzed and the rest of it went down pretty smooth.

Dulé
I guess I was set for a couple of weeks when we started searching for Gus and everybody was really excited about the idea of Dulé, so I was sent out to make that connection and get a little chemistry going ahead of time before we came in and did our little dance for all the suits.

An actual dance?
Yeah, it was non-choreographed and I tried to give him centre stage as much as I could because he had a professional dancing background and I'm fairly certain people would rather see him dance than me. But it came together. It was weird; you watch this show and you realize, 'Wow, if these guys don't work then the show is done'. If it was a forced chemistry we probably don't make it far at all. And with Dulé and I, it was just one of those lucky things that we realized almost immediately, 'Okay this is gonna be easy as long as we don't make it hard'. If it's not broke don't fix it, let's just go with what we've got and it was great.

Improv
I'm very lucky in that I've been given probably a much longer leash that I have any right to have been given but I can kind of hide behind this argument that this character approaches life in such a way that he's improvising his way through any given situation, and because of that it allows me to go way off in other directions sometimes and it's usually Dulé's job at somehow bring us back to where we're supposed to be. And he's great at that.

Lines
He has a tougher job, I'll put that out there. He's gotta keep his feet on the ground and keep me in line.

Far off?
Yes, that's happened on more than one occasion. It's at that point usually that Dulé will draw a line at some point and yell, 'Cut!'

Power
Yes, When he's had enough, that's it, that's the end of the take.

Psych-Outs
They started off happening pretty naturally, which was what was so fun about them and then once they caught on and the public was thirsty for them, obviously they became less planned and it also became dictated by what songs the network could get the rights to and all that other stuff that comes into play. So by the end there we were doing some that were just clinging to decent at best, and I think the idea for future is to not necessarily do one every single episode and just wait until one feels like it will be really good. For a while there it was getting pretty thin and the stuff they were getting us, the choice, they would send us eight songs and say 'You pick four' and all of them were bad, so it was like, 'What are the least offensive choices here?' and we ended up doing songs that you can't really do a lot with and that we're not even fans of. But it started off as a complete improvisation on the pilot, Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror, we did it as a goof, it was the last thing we shot on the pilot and they dug it and every week it was like, 'What song are you gonna do, what song are you gonna do?' And we don't know anything about royalties. We always go straight to these huge hits of the Eighties that cost tens of thousands of dollars to get the rights to, and then we started becoming less and less mainstream and the next thing you know we were doing Electric Avenue. So that's the evolution of the psych-outs.

Anything you want to do?
Well, I'll say this, and this ended up working out for us so much better than it possibly could have if we'd done it as a psych-out. We came up with our half Roland Orzabal, half Michael Jackson version of Shout as a psych-out and they could never get it, it was too expensive. And by actually working it into the episode, and it helped that John Landis was directing that episode and he comes in and bullies people a little, not only did we get to do it we got to do it with production value and that was awesome. So that one really worked out so much better than it would have if we'd just had to do a 10-second version. So in that case it being really expensive worked out to our advantage. I always go straight to that Euro synth-pop stuff; it would be great to get some Smiths onto the show at some point, figure out a way to cleverly work in maybe a Morrissey reference and then do a Smiths psych-out. That is my task, to get some Morrissey on the show.

Billy Ocean
Billy Ocean; we did Kirby & Queen twice actually; the first one was so bad that we didn't even air it and they asked us if we would do another version and we ended up doing it in the one in the water which, by our own admission, was much better.

Involved in character development
It's been cool, man. I've sort of adopted a producerial role on the show in addition to acting, so they'll usually run things by me especially if it's something radical, and like I said I get way more input than I should and I'm just very, very lucky. It's just been one wonderful opportunity after another.

Want to write?
You know, I figured it would be the natural progression of what would happen, just because I had been writing before and I had some producer credits, so I figured at some point it would make sense for me to go to them and say, 'Hey, I'd like to write an episode'. What I wasn't expecting was for Steve to come to me first season and ask if I wanted to do it, but it's a testament to how cool a guy he is and just enchanting this whole experience has been for me.

Loves the show
He's so enthusiastic; it's beyond infectious. I think there's a lot of Shawn in Steve, He's a guy whose father was a police officer and Steve wanted to go off and write movies and be in bands and be silly and I think in many ways Shawn is Steve's alter ego; it's why it remains the primary objective to me to privilege his vision because it's not just something he pulled out of his rear one day saying, 'I think I can sell this to a network', it is something that's, I think, pretty personal to him, even though it's so silly. First and foremost I wanna make sure that guy's happy, before anything else.

Tough to write
You know what? I get teased by all of our producers that the one character that's always underwritten in my episodes is Shawn, and I think the reason for that is that I get so tickled coming up with stuff for my fellow castmates to do that they don't maybe necessarily get to do or coming up with ways to involve them in ways that they don't usually get involved, Shawn's little arcs are usually an afterthought. So I usually turn in drafts and then get told, 'Yeah, this is great, where's Shawn?' At which point there's usually some kind of Shawn overhaul, which is fine by me because as long as the other stuff is in there, that's really all that matters.

Gone to Santa Barbera?
You know, we haven't. At the very beginning of production we sent a second unit there to get a bunch of exteriors that keep popping up; we've used the same seven stock shots about 30 times each. We're definitely due for some new exterior stock footage. But I think the hope is that this season we'll at least get there for a couple of days to shoot a couple of scenes, maybe from different episodes, we can kind of wedge in. I think Steve's planning on directing a two-part finale for season three that hopefully at least some of it will take place in Santa Barbara.

Monk helped?
Unquestionably. Monk was the face of the USA Network, it was the one bona fide scripted programming that they had on that network and it was the only way to ensure that there would be a built-in audience for our show. And that's what they gave us. I shudder to think what would have happened if it hadn't been that way, if they'd tried to launch us on our own night without such a solid lead-in, who knows whether anyone would have given us a shot? So in that sense we owe the network for having the foresight to pair us up with their big breadwinner, and to Monk for having all those fans.

Crossover?
I would say about half of Monk's audience has fallen for us and that we hold on to about half. And the rest are our own fans. And then we tend to haemorrhage – I think there's a more geriatric fanbase that monk has that goes to bed after Monk; they sort of drop off. I think we lose those fans in the upper age bracket and replace them with some younger people that probably don't tune in till Monk is over. It's a pretty nice little trade-off, you know? We've added a lot of youth to our fanbase, which is a good thing.

Young cast
We do skew young, and Duléand I need to figure out a way to continue to age decently because I think a huge part of the success of what we do is that people view us as being a little bit younger than we actually are. The second it becomes readily apparent that you have two dudes in their mid-30s running around acting like that, it might become less appealing. So we've gotta keep shaving and drinking plenty of water.

Dulé looks the same.
This is good, so we've got that working. So really when I say us I mean me. Dulé's clearly going to look 26 for the rest of his life. The pressure's all on me.

Rest of the cast
Just a great group of people, there's not a bad apple in the bunch. And you know, I probably wouldn't tell you if there was a bad apple in the bunch, but I can honestly say, and you sort of get it by watching the show, the vibe that you get is not manufactured, it's what makes working on this show so easy. Tim Omundson is great and he's completely embraced his role as the Coyote to my Road Runner and he's gotten really good at it and because of that it's sort of motivated the writers to write for him more and to start giving him more dimensions and try to make this guy a whole person. There are two lovely ladies on our show both of whom are just wonderful team players because it's taken a little bit longer to get around to them and they've been wonderfully patient and Maggie [Lawson], who plays Juliet, is now starting to reap the benefits of being so patient because she's got some pretty good B-stories in season two and even more fun stuff to look forward to in season three. And now we've got to get to the chief, man. We've got to figure out some ways to let her have some fun too. And then Corbin, honestly, is just the constant professional. That guy has done everything you can do as an actor at every level and he just brings this enthusiasm of a man who loves to act and I think it's a great example for us younger members of the cast to see because it's been quite a rollercoaster for him and he could come in jaded and just there to pick up his cheque and roll out and he's just as invested in his craft today as he was when he started. He just loves to work and he puts everything he has into every moment and he's very collaborative and for a couple of guys like Duléand I to see that is quite useful.

Father figure
I think because he has to play that sort of stringent guy on screen, I think off screen he tries to compensate by being as loose and buddy-esque as he can. He also likes to fancy himself as not really being old enough to be my dad, so I think he goes straight into buddy-buddy mode to help suppress that.

Psych-outs
I've got to figure out exactly how that would work. But we would like to get to the point where everybody is getting in on the joke and everybody is having a moment to shine and do what it is that we do. Our network is great; it's their job to hold on to what they think makes our show successful and it's a balance of 'Don't worry, we're not going to change anything radically,' and 'Hey, we've two years under our belts and a pretty loyal fanbase, I think we can afford to start taking some liberties' and it's kind of striking a balance between those two ideas.

Psychic episodes
It's the one area where I think our writing staff would probably admit that they get a little lazy. What started out as fairly specific physical psychic episodes with guide posts and bits became 'Shawn psychically figures out blank. Don't worry, Roday will come up with something'. And if you watch, the show's sort of evolved to the point where there's less and less of those elaborate physical psychic moments than there were at the beginning because they're hard to write and they're usually pretty broad, and I think what we realized was that what people really loved about our show was Shawn and Gus being Shawn and Gus and any time I do those huge psychic things Gus is usually left out of those and to me it always derails us a little bit because you watch these two guys spending the whole show figuring out who did it and then for the last 10 minutes Gus is nowhere to be seen while Shawn is up on a stage or somewhere doing something ridiculous to bring the show home. I think we've all been pretty conscious of like, okay, we know he's gonna have to do some of that, but how do we work it so that we don;'t lose Gus at the end of every episode,. And I think we're getting closer to that and coming up with ways to keep him involved. Dulé's whole thing is, 'If I'm not gonna speak, then do not put me in the shot in ways that I'm gonna be there for the duration. If it's another one of these where you cut to Gus once to make a goofy smile, then I'm staying way over here in a corner where there's nobody else in my shot but me. And I think I'm especially conscious of that in my episodes, I try to come up with the quickest breakdown possible, and I challenge the other writers to do that as well. Whoever has the shortest wrap-up this year wins something. Make it a contest.

Gus does hit you.
Dulé's a physical actor and he digs that, man. He doesn't hold back much either; you definitely know when you've been hit by Dulé Hill and I think on some level that's payback for the whole experience, I think he really relishes those moments when he gets to sock me. He ends up with egg on his face a lot more than I do, so he takes great pride in those moments when he knows he can cause me a little bit of physical discomfort.

Write something he doesn't want next time.
Exactly. Exactly. He's a good sport though, man. Especially if he recognizes the comedic value of something; he's usually game for just about anything.

Who corpses most?
Oh, wow. Probably Omundson. Probably Tim.

Happy birthday.
I was actually shooting up in Edmonton; I don't know if you've spent a lot of time in the US but it's sort of like the Albuquerque, New Mexico of Canada. There's not a whole lot there, just a lot of flat plains and freezing temperatures. So my birthday came and went rather quietly without a lot of to-do, which I think is good once you reach our age. You've gotta get through 'em and you don't need a whole lot of chicanery; it comes, it's gone, there was no way for anyone to do anything for me because I was on a distant outpost and by the time I get back all the fun and the hoo-ha is over because it's a week later. Kind of worked out nice, I liked that, it was very low-key.

Blacktschica, thanks for the interview and pic. It's Friday, and I miss Psych.

I'm trying to decide what Psych episode to watch this evening, because it's just me and my kitty tonight.
Tomorrow night I'll be out enjoying the first fireworks of the season!

Let me go see if there's any James pics I want to repost tonight ...

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes, we will probably need to start that thread. Dulé may be next (if another interviewer can get a hold of his publicist). biggrin.gif

I will let my friend know about Roday's interview. I told him he needs to write a Psych book (because it would be awesome!!)...he's thinking about it.

I'm on the hunt for more pics of Rodeo Drive but no luck so far! LOL!! biggrin.gif

You are quite welcome!!! I miss Psych too. I'm so used to my Burn Notice/Psych hit. I do dabble in Monk as well, so I feel I'm missing the one two punch. But it will be back soon!

I was trying to watch There Might Be Blood but alas my iTunes is still not cooperating. sad.gif

Glad you liked it! We enjoyed the Roseville City fireworks from the comfort of Dad's backyard this evening with an early Father's Day celebration. I'm too wired to sleep right now, so I did a little random searching for a banner and found the sign as a 'bonus.' smile.gif I saved the screencaps a while back and tucked them into a folder I labeled 'Father's Day.'

Feel free to add to the love, although it's easier to find screencaps of Henry and Shawn at odds than at ease.

Unlike Shawn, my 'psychic' powers seem to be failing me today.

This is a rather odd picture request, but I can't remember what episode this is from and so I can't find the screencap I'm looking for. Does anyone have it, or can they tell me the episode the scene is from so I can grab it? I'm talking about the pic/scene where Shawn has two straws hanging out of his mouth like walrus tusks.

I know where it's from! Cloudy, With a Chance of Murder... it's after he's spent the whole night reviewing the tape looking for a clue that it wasn't Sandra Panich

Wow! Thanks for the amazingly quick response.
Now, let me just tweak the pic a little here and there ...

I guess the reason no one has posted here in more than 24 hours is because everyone is off having hot fun in the summer time.
Here's a screencap I grabbed from 'Who Ya Gonna Call' simply because of the cuteness.

P.S. - Thanks, Winky, for helping me find the pic to make my shiny new avatar.
