on the subject of james-im just listening to the yang podcast and i really like james voice.
i notice accents and stuff like that and really love accents and even though james doesnt have a specific accent other than "american" but i just really like his voice.

I really like his voice too!! but he definitely needs to speak more into the mic. Steve Franks sounded so loud but James sounded so quiet.

Yes, just from listening to the commenatries from both seasons and seeing James do interviews, he is quite different from his character. Which I like because Shawn is nuts sometimes lol. Even his voice inflection is different, which creates some really good contrast when he's playing Shawn. He seems to be somewhat reserved, but not reserved at all. He's intriguing.

My Husband loves Loves LOVES zombie movies, which made Shawn and Gus of the dead an ideal starter for his intro to the Psych world!

They've more or less confirmed that on some of the commentaries... and I get that feeling as well. I think part of it is, when he's not on camera, but is on set, he may be from the school of acting where he removes himself from everything to review scenes in his head, get in the right headspace, etc.

His interview on Today that someone posted (while an awkward interview) I think highlights the more reserved side of his personality.

(IMO, in the "Psychouts" and outtakes, he is still acting, even if goofing off, to me that is still James in acting mode)

Whereas I think Tim is just the opposite, with a very serious character, but a great, friendly, funny guy IRL.

Yeah they have. Henze mentioned it in the American Duos commentary. That's why I said he is really intriguing because while he is reserved, even on the commentaries, he is still throwing things out there that have everyone including myself, cracking up.

I think that's James in the Psychouts, that's just my opinion though. While he is still on set and in the mindframe of Shawn, he still seems to be the funloving guy that likes to joke around. Everyone seems to really emphasize how funny he is.

JR: Thanks for being even remotely interested in talking to me.

TTTP: I don't think finding people who want to talk to you is much of an issue these days.

JR: Well, a lot of them are tied up in hospital beds and what not, so to have a healthy, upwardly mobile man makes me feel good.

TTTP: Going by the on-screen product as well as the outtakes that USA shows, is there anyone in America who has as much fun at their job as you do?

JR: I hope not, because right now we sort of live in the bubble where, because we have more fun than anyone else in the world, we feel really special. If we were to find out someone was having more fun than us, it's like the one thing that we thought we had would be taken away from us, and then I'm not really sure what we have at that point, except Canadian passports.

GP: According to the Psych-Outs that play at the ends of the episodes you guys burst into song a lot on set.

JR: You know, that was happening loosely during the first season. We’ve kind of worn ourselves out a little bit. It was something we did on the pilot to amuse ourselves, but they caught it on camera and everybody really gravitated toward it, and then they started asking us to do it every week, and it became a grind, because I think what made the first one so good was that it was spontaneous and came out of nowhere. It’s a little bit different when you have to actually manufacture ‘em. So I think we took a little bit of a hiatus from the singing so that when we bring it back it can have that old magic


GP: All right. Gus’ multitude of names. There’s a new one every week. Where do they come from?

JR: Yeah. Well, I sort of… I sort of get myself into new situations and I do something and let it catch on and then it becomes this expectation, which is great, but then you want to get as far with that as possible. So it’s sort of a trial by fire thing every week. The writers will give something a shot, and if it’s good enough, it stays, and if not then maybe I can come up with something better.

GP: Well, you know, if the name isn’t good enough, you could always distract people with another pineapple or something.

JR: Another pineapple! You know, another one of the corners that I’ve painted myself into. Yes, yes.

GP: [laughs] You’re thinking of replacing the pineapples with, like, guavas?

JR: Yeah, well, we’ve spoken about it, but I guess there’s something to be said for tradition, and the pineapple’s always gonna have the sentimental value for us since it came from the pilot. The only thing about the pineapple—and it was actually used rather correctly, which is rare, because everyone thinks it was actually ironic—that little bit where I grabbed the pineapple off the top of Gus’ refrigerator was not scripted and the director of the pilot was not a fan of that moment. It was not in his cut, and I think it went in and out and in and out about two more times and was about one of the last things to get thrown back into the final cut of the pilot. And look what it became.

GP: Well, now it’s the mascot!

JR: It is! It’s iconic, man! It’s like, the face of our show!

GP: It’s another character!
